Girls band cry deserves more recognition, honestly prefer it more than bocchi the rock(in my opinion). But both are great band anime and its unfair to compare them as the overall setting is vastly different. In GBC all the characters have complex problems like an ex-idol band member, past bullying which made the mc have a certain bipolar personality, born to persue a career they didnt want, unable to say what they want in fear of losing connections and hiding their past trauma of loss behind a cheery positive attitude. It just sucks that not many people know about this anime because the only place u can watch is either in japan or france . Music are all bangers and the VA's play the instruments and sings the actual songs , BTR left me feeling empty in the band genre but im glad GBC help filled that hole, looking forward to the BTR movie and a 2nd season for both BTR and GBC!
Yes you cannot compare their plot and setting and circumstances as they are widely different. You can compare the music however and I'll tell you that GBC has better music quality than Bocchi (which is still great), the GBC characters are voiced by the actual band members of Togenashitogeari which is the band featured in this show so it makes their songs more genuine, it actually feels like their songs, the character's actual songs. Nonetheless Bocchi is still awesome, GBC just has a better musical sense in my opinion.

So, as of Saturday, July 6th, it was announced via different livestreams from both the Girls Band Cry and BanG Dream official Japanese UA-cam channels that My GO & Togenashi Togeari, the real life bands representing their respective series, are doing a joint concert on January 12th at the Tokyo Dome city hall. This announcement was so huge in Japan, that the hashtag #大ガールズバンド時代 (“The Great Girls Band Era”) was trending on social media. I say all of this because regardless of what Gigguk feels or claims or what others say about how we should deem these girl band anime, the perception surrounding these broader shows is much bigger than he or any of us in the west think. Hardly anyone over there is claiming one to have succeeded the other, nor are any of these shows senselessly pitted against each other like some dick measuring contest no one asked for. A lot of people in Japan simply like these kinds of shows. None of this is mentioning how popular both It’s MyGO and Girls Band Cry are in other East Asian countries like China.
GBC and MyGo are equally good. What I like about both of them is like Garnt said every character has their own conflict and on top of that, the MC created the songs through their feelings and from their heart.
And the incoming BanG Dream AveMujica has potential to give us a totally different take on what a Girls Band anime can be based on their latest trailer. What a time to be alive

As much as GBC is a peak, their legit comparison isn't Bocchi. The tone are pretty different to begin with imo. One said MyGO deserved better, which I do agree and would serve as GBC's comparison. It's like comparing fruit juice to milk coffee. Bocchi only fair comparison is to K-On, in which both are Kirara and is shaped according to the Kirara flavor.
The comparison after that both of them are girls band genre, is mostly because how both show were never expected to be that level of good, which turned out to be.
I'd argue non of them could be compared besides mygo and GBC. K-on is about fun memories, bocchi is about going outside your comfort zone, and GBC is about underdogs trying to navigate through a competitive industry. Hence mygo fits as a comparison for GBC while k-on and bocchi couldn't be compared with each other unless we talk about the technicalities (e.g., band type, music style, skill level).
Yeah He placed Jellyfish can't Swim in the night in A Tier simply because he felt the anime loses steam after the second half. But he still claimed the anime to be good though, it's just GBC delivered while Jellyfish can't Swim didn't do much
I felt the same as Garnt. I ended up being dissapointed with Jellyfish but I loved Girls Band Cry. The CGI was fucking amazing, it was crazy how many people were saying that the CG "wasn't awful I guess". Mate, are your eyes okay? This show looks stunning.
Is GBC music genre even comparable to BTR? I havent watch the anime but their music are more towards j-rock such as tuyu, zutomayo while btr is math rock such as tricot, toe or elephant gym. On music alone personally it felt like different kind of j rock
Different kind of J rock but still J rock. Bocchi the Rock has many different styles because their songs were composed by different ppl from different bands that has their own style.
Math rock is basically a subgenre that messes with tempo like time signature, both bands produces music of that sub genre. I get the feeling you're talking about, togetoge did felt like they have more vocaloid influence in their composition. Acane behind zutomayo being a huge fan of like eve and producers like nuyuri and 100kai oto and zutomayo songs being mostly arranged by 100kai oto and other vocaloid producers, even yukisan who is also yoh kamiyama. Pusu behind tuyu being a producer himself who looks up to nbuna. While ksku band felt more traditional rock like Mrs, ryoshakai and tricot etc
Man, both are valid But in my opinion the music is vastly different in style, I prefer more ksku band songs as it's not as forward as gbc. I will explain it as gbc instruments are vocal centric where the harmonise relies strongly with the vocals as for ksku band it's more harmonise with each instrument, the vocals is the one that follows the instruments instead of the other way round, this make ksku band style of rock more favouritable for me as instruments was uniquely place then gbc style is very straight and forward
I think GBC animation is more fluid than Studio Orange animation, feels like more fps if you know what I mean. Some cuts were looking a bit strange, especially when there are 2D character and 3D character in the same cut, but when the backgrounds and everything else is CGI together with characters, this show looks fantastic. I think people should really overlook their opinions about CGI, because I saw some people not even trying to watch GBC because they heard it's CG, very strange mindset, considering we have more and more good CG in anime every year, and it won't go anywhere.

lmo GBC is better , much better because it has an actual story while l felt Bocchi was played for laughs but it's still good just l feel not as good as GBC . I've seen a lot of the comments here said it's MyGo is equally good as GBC. I used to be a HUGE fan of Bandori back in highschool. Played the game, watch every Livestream, memorize the song and even the VA. But now there's just much content and new bands added making stop supporting the franchise, Plus I don't have much time and energy/enthusiasm when I was younger (Yes I got out of the rabbit hole) Is it truly as good as GBC? Because if does l kinda wanna relive my high school years. But at the same time I don't wanna return back to Bandori rabbit hole
Bit late but yes!! I watched it a bit before the first few fan-translated episodes of GBC, and as a former band idol rabbit holer it definitely earned the praise to make it worth watching standalone, and I'm 100% getting the album next to my Kessoku Band and TogeToge ones The animation is also way less jarring than I originally remembered bandori/love live seasons to be, getting closer and closer to how D4DJ flows so it's a good chance to try it out!
BTR K-ON GBC I personally liked how drama heavy GBC is, and the way the writer uses build ups and pay-offs really nicely that i ended up binging it in one sitting. Imo tho, it's not comparable to bocchi at all and it's a different show altogether. But i do think it deserves the recognition it's getting and hopefully it gets a season 2.
Agreed, it's a very different show from Bocchi the Rock. While the general setup is the same (young women form a band and play music) the themes, characters, and drama are very different.
Both have great music and stellar production value, but I prefer Bocchi because it's a 'stress-free environment'. This is very subjective, of course. I'm a 45-year-old creative freelancer. I no longer look for drama in my entertainment, especially not in a whiny high-school dropout who pokes her nose into everyone else's business and makes enemies out of someone else's past because she didn't have a satisfying closure with hers.
I enjoyed the 3D animation. I'm not a traditional Jrock fan so I didn't really dig the music. I could easily relate to all the personal conflicts and the emotional payoffs but didn't feel like they were able to explore the depth of each character's struggles. I blame the short runtime for that. IT WAS REALLY TOUGH to swallow each cringe ass monologue the MC did before they played a song DUUUUUUDE. If I had been there in real life I would have been like wtf is this venting, we all got problems but I don't go out there screaming about it to people's faces. It's my damn issue ok? Anyways, As a last opinion that comes from personal preference. They relied waaaay too much on motion capture during their concerts, it felt like I was looking at a person wearing a mask and that shit put me waaay off and made it even harder to enjoy the musical performances. You can tell that the studio put a lot effort in trying to cover up that fact by using fancy filters and colors to keep the fantasy goin. The camera work was pretty unrealistic too and it ruined the more garage band vibes that I was expecting. For all of the reasons above, I do believe that comparing this anime to Bocchi the Rock is quite a tall order. The difference in quality is massive.

Motion capture is literally how they’re animating. The exploration likely wasn’t going to happen, since they’re literally just introduced and trauma doesn’t just evaporate so easily. Expecting that is dumb. Yeah, BTR doesn’t really compare. Not cuz quality, but cuz the genre is too different.
