As someone that expended thousands of hours of his life playing the main MH games this game amazed me back in the day, the way in how they managed to take all the intricacies of MH and perfectly translated them to a pokemon-like rpg was so genius. You talk about how the monster patterns can feel random because you have no way to anticipate them the first time and it can be difficult to remeber them the next time but thats MH basic stuff, the fisrt time you fight a monster it will totally screw you and the second and third time it will not be that different, but by the fourth time you are already feeling it and by the fifth time you are styling over the monster, that's why mh can be so addictive and it is an experience that this game managed to perfectly replicate over it's own context and rukes.
In addition, knowing the monsters ahead of time gives you a lot of insight over what their attack patterns may be. Nerscylla? Probably technique attacks, maybe some powerful hits. Nargacuga? Definitely speed. Feels good to have monster hunter knowledge recontextualizes.
@@voxelheartthe monster patterns are slightly more unpredictable compared to stories 2 but its still very fun, i started playing 2016 (what a time it has been!) and i know every pattern of every monster in the game, which makes me feel like an genius haha expect for Fatalis, his patterns are ENTIRELY random, but hey i guess its still fun, have you played the original?
The element change mechanic was single-handedly my favorite mechanic out of the first game, having a water Black Diablos was awesome and so customizable, and it’s probably a big reason I don’t like the second game nearly as much since I was really wanting to make a Water Gammoth before the game even launched
That was my favorite monster+element combo. My water Black Diablos was my main monster when I played through the original release. I also had an ice Rathian and thunder Brute Tigrex. This mechanic is pretty much my only gripe with MHS2… I had plans for either a dragon Mizutsune and/or a water Legiana before release. (By the way, changing Ratha’s element to dragon is worthwhile for seeing him w/ the changes in cutscenes alone.)
@@CTSael absolutely, Dragon Rathalos looks incredible, it’s even more frustrating since it was intentionally removed from the second game even though they had models for almost every monster with the correct element types. I wanted to make a Water Gammoth when the game was first announced and it stings even more knowing it would’ve looked awesome in game
@@coopyrbrown3031 A real shame, too. Because after the DLC dropped for MHS2, the thought that slept at the back of my mind was how cool the different elemental changes could have looked on all of the Elder Dragons and Deviants. Especially my post-game go-to partner, Boltreaver Astalos. Imagining it being recolored to either fire or dragon element would have looked so badass!
Heads up for all new and aspiring Riders experiencing the original entry, whether it’s your first exposure to the Stories series or you’re coming in from Stories2. Make sure to collect any wandering Poogies you come across, the rewards are absolutely sublime for saving our little friends. (one of them in particular for tracking down all of them is ESPECIALLY something to look forward too, but I’ll leave that for you all to discover for yourselves.)
man i remember playing this on my 3DS when it came out, never made it to the end of the game properly (although i did get to the final area) since i was just a kid at the time and couldn't understand the nuance of the enemy attack patterns, the thing bringing me back to this game easily has to be the ability to swap monster elemental alignment in the rite of channelling, something i sorely missed in the sequel. i remember my favorite monster was an ivory lagiacrus i tuned to the fire element, turning the blue tipped spikes red and i called it "bones", looking forward to recreating him in the remaster!
Played the game when it first came out as a Pokémon-obsessed kid and was super disappointed the dlc never came over from Japan. Happy to hear that it’s here, that reason alone is making me consider picking it up again. Now that I think about it, I picked up the sequel but didn’t get too far since I thought the pacing was slow. Maybe it’s time to give it another go
They kept the same VA as from MHS2, but honestly, Navirou was much less annoying in the first one. I still can't stand his English dub, but at least Japanese is available.
Another addition was some customization stuff. Dressing as other characters wasn't part of the first game, at least not outside of Japan. Dunno what the JP vers had in regards to that.
Ok great review. Just a few things I respectfully disagree on. 1. The sequel still had the egg design issue. Some monsters still had shared designs with very similar colors which made it hard to find them without a chart 2. The randomness in combat to me felt great. It meant you never truly learned a monster and you had to be more prepared.
I agree, especially with your second point. With the combination of combos and randomness, it was really fun to weigh your options of finishing a combo and possibly losing the head to head or to just take the safe option. With stories 2 you knew you would lose the head to head because you knew for sure what the monsters were going to do.
This game combat isn't very good and doesn't feel weighty, people like to put Pokemon down but it's combat and the one of other jrpgs like the early final fantasy (2-10)are so much better and engaging because the combat of this game makes me feel like a viewer instead of a person that is participating in the fight. The Battles are Also way too random and feel like you are not in Control so i don't agree with you
@@isidorodaviddoro1920 I don’t agree with the Pokémon or FF as examples. FF’s random encounters makes it annoying at times and it really just boils down to farming like most jrpgs. Pokemon ‘s combat isn’t really spectacular either since lacks depth outside of dedicated formats. VGC sets rules that make it more interesting however I feel like we’re talking about mainline Pokémon without tournament rulesets so I’ll stay there. In my opinion monster hunter stories has more customization and more options in combat than pokemon . As for FF it depends. You can’t really customize your character outside of their abilities and that doesn’t sound appealing to me. This is entirely my thoughts and you are welcome to like those two more. I even found myself playing world of final fantasy and that has interesting combat. One thing to note is I do believe stories can have better combat and more ways to make the rider more involved like making the rider able to do as much damage as monsties
My father got me this i need to go get it tomorrow since is my birthdays gift played the second game and finished it 3 times the original one 5 times in phone and 3ds 😂
I played the original, and I’m super excited for people to play the game I fell in love with years ago. Kinda sad you didn’t touch on the Rider Card, I hope they kept that feature.
Bought it on 3DS and mobile, boutta buy it again. Glad to hear its still faithful to the original. The hard difficulty is why I love this game more compared to MH Stories 2
For those who played the Sequel before the original game, expect less of the patterned fights between monsters as the fights were more random when it came to attack choices
I'm kinda sad that Legend of Zelda DLC is absent, I used the Majora's Mask to cover Navirou's face and it was funny in some of the story cut scenes 🤣 One of the gripes was with the original 3DS game was the bingo system, so I didn't do much of powering up my Monsties which meant me beating the game with titular Rathalos that only had basic 3 spots open, no wonder I had some hard time in certain parts :D But still, I had the fondest times of playing the game on 3DS back in the day when the game came out. 135+ hours was spent during the glorious 3DS days, it's insane to see this coming so close to Nintendo Switch. Last month I even came back to finish the Wings of Ruin sequel so the timing couldn't be more perfect for this remaster version of the original game 🥰
4:36 They way you mentioned how they "tame and befriend" monsters makes them sound better than it really is haha. They steal eggs from monster parents and then raise them to fight against their will for you haha. I love it though
“Against their will” is actually not the case, the game proves that the bonds are real and not artificially created. They fight with you by their own will.
This literally isn't true at all. We're shown that monsters are free to get up and leave if they really want and navirou even goes over how the stones don't force monsters to fight but more understand what the user wants, it why kinship is a resource
4:31 actually it is in the same universe as the main line mh but regardless I will see the full review when I’m done with the game but so far good review
Got into monsters hunter a few months ago, heard about a stories and stories 2 remake. Sadly i played stories 2 first, but i absolutely loved it. I'm 100% going to give stories 1 a try the next months!
As a Pokemon and Monster Hunter fan, I’m so glad these games exist. I’ve gotten just as many hours of entertainment outta this franchise as I have the others!
Honestly not sure if they should make a sort of monster taming mechanic in main games. I think the young me wants it but the one who knows monster hunter doesn't?
Good news: there's already a mainline game with monster taming! In MH Dos, after reaching HR11 and clearing the first three arena quests, you have a chance to tame most monsters when capturing them. You can bring monsties into the arena and do battle with another player and their monstie.
@@Flare-Boltand the riding feature turned great wroggi into a destroyer of health bars god forbid rajang was also on the map. The quest monster would be almost at that point
is there an option of no voice acting at all, essentially like the original? i appreciate the effort of offering voice acting, but that option being present would also be nice for anyone wanting to have as close to the original experience as possible.
One thing that i really don’t like is how small the monsters are. In the sequel, the monsters feel more present because of their size and their movements while you ride them.
RIIIIIIDE ON!!! My real only complaint for the original game was its limited graphics and controls. Something that is instantly fixed by it being ported to any other platform.
I agree 100% with this review. In 2016 this panning pop-up panel about gathering was like, basic in even mainline game, but it aged poorly. Other than than, most features feel pretty modern for a 2016 game?? I enjoy my ride on PC so far, after finishing 3DS version and iOS version.
Footage looks way better than the switch reviews I’ve been seeing popping up. Seriously thought it was a downgrade, but it doesn’t look too far off from the second game. I might give it a chance
Outstanding review!!! A slight nitpick though, the Monster Hunter stories series is canon to the main monster hunter universe, it's not a separate one. And they managed o blend that quite well in both games, with riders forming remote civilisations that rarely interact with the outside world. The first game also tackled this aspect head on when you enter gildegaran and you are scrutinized for the outlandish behavior of walking with a monster in tow XDDD
Would you have a source on it being in the same universe that I could check out? I keep seeing this claim but I've never seen it stated authoritatively, and things like Rajang laying eggs seem like obvious discrepancies between this "version" of the MH world and the world the mainline games depict imo
@@Oceaniz Well, the part with fanged beast eggs n stuff like kinship moves is purely for gameplay reasons, I think it's just a mechanic, no one in the games actually acknowledges fanged beasts laying eggs in stories, and the only time you see a baby arzuros in a cutscene it's already born. That and I don't think it would've been appropriate to show your rider ripping a rajang's womb to get to the baby XDDD. And as for it being canon, it was specififed in an interview that all of the games are tailored so that they don't mix with each other much other than let's say locales in mainline games so that they don't retcon or override parts of the canon they establish. that's why they never answered the question whether rise is in the old or new world, riders being recluses, etc. And considering that many people support this claim, perhaps there was an actual response among the lines of yes its canon but no clue on that one.
@@Oceaniz Okay so regarding your question, Tsujimoto responds in interviews with MhST being a spin-off series that expands on the monster hunter world(not the game). He never separates it from the general world of monster hunter and the idea behind it wasn't "what if in another timeline" but rather "if some people hunt monsters, why not have people befriend them?". When asked why palamutes are born with clothes on them in st2, he answers that they wanted to show people less accustomed to the mh franchise that that is indeed a palamute and not a random dog. So basically this also confirms that many things that don't make sense were stretched for gameplay reasons. And the all monsties come from eggs is most likely for that rng aspect of monster dens. even if they made a baby fanged beast model that you snatched from it's mom, it would take away from that "i wonder what it is" vibe.
Does every monster have it's unique egg colors like in the sequel or does it have the same issue with weird colored eggs. For example a lagiacrus hatching from a pink egg and not a blue one.
I played the original on the 3ds when it came out in 2017. I was really surprised by it, I just downloaded the demo thinking I could kill time with it and by the end of the long demo (which is great) I had preordered the game x) I think nostalgia and the fact that it is entirely voice acted now could make me buy it again haha I loved the sequel too but the first one has a special place in my heart :)
This game came out 8 years ago? Nah, no way, I swear I was playing it like 3 years ago and Stories 2 came out like a year ago. This is the biggest gaslight in history.
Never played the original one, so that is on my list. But I'm not quite sure I'll play it as much as I played, and still play, the sequel (Currently 578 hours).
Honest question how do you go for the 3-D models for the final evolution starter Pokémon with the exception of Hisuian and Paldea Starers why not go for their art much way kid did for their Pre-and Middle Evolution
Y'know I had the opposite problem with the UI, I played on a switch lite, and the pop up didn't seem too big, but the battle UI felt a little small on the tiny screen of the switch lite
Even if I already have the 3DS version I think I would get it one of this days. Maybe the Epona mounsties would be a miss, but is not a big deal for me as long I still get those missing japanese exclusive content. One last thing, do you nickname your monsters? I like to give Game of Thrones names like Velaryon the Velocidrome or Vhagar the Rathian.
very early actually! if you get a Qurupeco, you can use its call ability to "summon" fights, and sometimes you can find monsters way earlier that way :D
I'm actually happy that they didn't change the original enemy AI - it makes things interesting and actually give some threat, while in MHS2 it was simply boring. What I'm actually not happy about are the graphics - the colors look oversaturated and some graphics seem overly smoothed out (what's up with dens?). I'm also sad that they didn't allow for repositioning the genes (that was a major quality of life boost for mhs2!), and I'm sorry they didn't add quick fights when facing lower lvl monsters... Gonna miss that a lot when lvling my party! Still, the more challenging fights and the ability to change Monstie's element are somethings to be looking forward to! As well as actually compelling story and characters (mhs2 sucked in that regard😅).
Oh what, it worked fine for me. You have to give a monster multiple elemental attack up genes to change its color, maybe thats the issue you're experiencing?
You have to really stack the elemental boosts to change a monstie’s element. If I remember correctly from playing it on the 3DS, the value is +5 to affect a non-elemental partner, which is much more easily achievable vs one with an already-ascribed element. You have to both stack the element you want + remove genes that boost its natural element. Once the value of the desired element is a higher number above the natural one, it will take effect. (Though a monster with an already existing element will naturally have a base value for their original element even without those genes that you must remove, so you have to really stack the overriding element for the change to even work.)
I'm not a fan of rock paper scissors mechanics, the game literally decides if you win or not, as it sees your choice before displaying a result, if it wants it can let you win or lose.
Its a case of "Breath of fresh air to the franchise and an odd twist to it, but nothing new from its 3DS release" for me. My biggest gripe is with the Rite of Channeling as the farming for it is.... Its really bad... Like its almost not worth even doing in the first place other than just clearing out Monster space.... Since you can't really change the gene to any slot you want on the grid (which is what MHS2 did) the farming to craft your perfect monster is going to be horrible for you. If you got the gene but its in the wrong area? That's a reeeal shame because you have to go out and look for that monster and gene all over again
Was anything altered or changed text wise? I know they changed Male and Female to the type a or b crap but i dont know of the text was kept the same as in the original 3ds version.
ok so my friend told me "the game isnt about adapting its about planning" and i am like "B**** WHAT? what about when you change your strategy beacuse you failed a quest is that not adapting?" and then bro sayed "its not adapting" so can somsone you explain did monster hutner ever focus on adapting or is it just "PLAN OR PERISH" like my friend sayed
To clarify im not angr, but no its not they are two separate franchises the only thing similar is that you capture monsters also dont sit there like sun and moon and scarlet and violet werent creative with their story regardless of graphics; i remember the fan base coming up with theories for scarlet and violet after the base game and how sun amd moon changed the formula for pokemon. Scarlet and violet also added boss fights not just gym leaders had compelling characters and dlc characters and yeah they might not be perfect but they are gems in their own right for the 3D era of pokemon.
Please stop comparing Pokemon with this Monster Hunter Spin off, both are different franchises that do different things and as a jrpg Pokemon is much better

PS: I saw the answer to my question. It is really stupid they stuck to the original
Dam i had no idea the controller vibrations did that with the eggs thats cool thanks for the info
MHS2 not having the changing type mechanic was its biggest problem for me
Does any one know how to skip the text box?
I played the original on the 3ds when it came out in 2017. I was really surprised by it, I just downloaded the demo thinking I could kill time with it and by the end of the long demo (which is great) I had preordered the game x)
I think nostalgia and the fact that it is entirely voice acted now could make me buy it again haha
I loved the sequel too but the first one has a special place in my heart :)
Can't wait to play it!
MonkeysDoingBackflips/10
is the puzzle & dragon crossover still there?
This game came out 8 years ago? Nah, no way, I swear I was playing it like 3 years ago and Stories 2 came out like a year ago. This is the biggest gaslight in history.
Never played the original one, so that is on my list. But I'm not quite sure I'll play it as much as I played, and still play, the sequel (Currently 578 hours).
This is gonna be amazing 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thanks For this! Love your content ❤❤❤❤
Does the steam version have x3 gameplay during fights?
Quick question: how do expand the stables?
But how long to get tigrex? Lol seriously i love that monstie ps GREAT REVIEW🎉🎉
very early actually! if you get a Qurupeco, you can use its call ability to "summon" fights, and sometimes you can find monsters way earlier that way :D
@@Oceanizyou can actually get it was before that. The odyssey special quest takes place in a tigrex nest and is redoable as much as you want
14:03 is that a dragon tigex
Ive only ever played the mobile demo. I'll probably pick this up at some point
I always enjoy that in no matter what universe of monster hunter there is usually a character that is actually cursed to speak in rhymes. Lol
I got monster hunter stores collection for Nintendo switch version physical copy on day one from game stop 😄
I actually very hate the gene thing, because every time I switch to a stronger monster, I need to collect them again
Is aptonoth still as op tho?
I played the original on the 3DS and the enymies can get frustrating. The final area took very long to complete for me.
Does the remaster included the dlc from the original release?
Yes! Include the Japan exclusive ones.
RGV (RageGamingVideos) posted a video of MH Stories remastered not too long ago, what a coincidence.
why tame monster is so small??? why size differenf???
What sucks is the channeling changing ur monsties colour isnt working😢
Oceaniz are you gonna make a final MHA vid when the series concludes? 👀
I'm not a fan of rock paper scissors mechanics, the game literally decides if you win or not, as it sees your choice before displaying a result, if it wants it can let you win or lose.
Bought this game on 3ds, ios, android, and now switch 😂 imported the asia English physical copy. Only like $21 usd is a deal
Sadly its body type now
Don't ever dissrespect Chief Omna's rhymes again
Hope we also get a 4u remaster
I'm so happy this game is getting the praise that it deserves.
Fun fact: if you find all poogie's outfits you get to unlock the great poogie which u can ride and fight with 😮
Got this on a whim, as an enjoyer of both TBRPGs and MonHun, the game is just too easy. Definitely a kids game.
Bro why did you stop at fanged wyvern, we still have, piscne wyver, elder dragons, fanged beast, leaviathan and many more to go on
I thought the Zelda content was cut?
It's sad that I can't play the remastered version on my Android😭😭😭
Can you pretty pwease make a monster hunter frontier ecology long video :)
Yappirou
Cover the new monster hunter wild trailers
How much UI? Yes.
ok so my friend told me "the game isnt about adapting its about planning"
and i am like "B**** WHAT? what about when you change your strategy beacuse you failed a quest is that not adapting?"
and then bro sayed "its not adapting"
so can somsone you explain did monster hutner ever focus on adapting or is it just "PLAN OR PERISH" like my friend sayed
Awesome
Is there this games equivalent of shinies????
why did they not tweak that very unliked gene slot thing?
i get this is a remake but if no one liked that why keep it?
MH Stories is just "What if Pokemon actually got to be creative for the 3D games"
Considering how boring mhst2 combat got I think s bit for randomneds is ok for thid gsme
Man i wish they didnt kill the anime of this game
Sooooo legends Arceus, but like 10 years older. Pokemon has really shafted us damn 😂
This game was semi open world on 3ds? Jeusus fuck pokemon really is just a bag of excuses huh
No Zelda crossover? 0/10, worst game ever, do not buy under any circumstances
Only 10 views in 50 seconds? Bro fell off
Be original not lame
funneeeee xddddddddddd
Are you feeling like a big man now?
