  • A classic ragtime tune written by Lew Pollack and published in 1914. This arrangement is by IowaBob (Bob Driggs) for brass quintet. I adapted it a bit for 5 t-bones. IowaBob does a lot of very nice arrangements. His "That's a Plenty" can be found at: musescore.com/user/33862304/s...
The trombone quintet version is at:

Hi Bob, I did another video trombone quintet version of one of your arrangements (Over The Rainbow). It turned out pretty well. I haven't uploaded it yet but I wanted to say thanks again for all you do. I wanted to link to the brass quintet version at Musescore, but I see it's no longer there, so I plan to link it to your most recent arrangements page. Happy Holidays!

@@t-bonejeff I look forward to your post. I have temporarily hidden most of my arrangements because I had a rash of "score harvesters" who were collecting 20 scores a day without so much as a thank you. I will "unhide" Over the Rainbow so you can make the link. You are an amazing player!

Splendid job not only of the performance, but the scoring as well. I play trombone in a Dixieland jazz band and this tune had a written trombone solo that I didn't quite like using as a model and so was searching for some other ideas and found this video. Since I have done some collaborative trombone ensembles during the pandemic using different video editing apps, I was quite impressed with your effort. If you don't mind sharing, what kind of setup do you use to get this professionally done video? Thanks and I really enjoyed it and shared the video with some fellow trombone players in my area in Colorado.
Also thanks to IowaBob for the original score but as he says he removed it because of score harvesters. Never heard of such a thing but not surprised.

Thanks Bruce, Iowa Bob does quite a number of quintets. 2-3 a week sometimes. I especially liked IowaBob's versions of "That's A Plenty" and "Over the Rainbow". As far as my videos, I use a few different programs. I use a green screen to record each trombone part, then using Corel Video Studio 2020 I am able to put each part at the bottom of a screen capture video of the tune played by a program called Forte 12. Forte 12 plays the score with red dots. I keep the tempos exactly the same so that I can switch out the audio generated by the Forte program and sub in the bone parts that I have recorded earlier and combined into a wave file using Audacity. There is quite a bit of tinkering that I have figured out over time, but that is essentially what I do. Other programs could be used to get a similar result, but I had accumulated these rather inexpensive programs over time for other uses and found a way to put them together. I like the red dots displaying on the score. I believe that Forte is the only program that plays back a score with that technique. Others use bars and highlighted measures. The video camera I use is pretty basic, but with some decent lighting it usually does a good job. Some of my videos have turned out better than others, but over all I am ok with the results. If you want more info contact me through my web site www.tbonejeff.com and I will give you more detail. Also if you are interested in IowaBob's original quintet, send him a quick message through Musescore. If that doesn't work, send me a quick note and I'll look into it.

How do you play the smears of a perfect fifth? Say, those at the beginning from C up to G? C is position 6 and smearing up you run out of slide at F (position 1).

Yes, that is a problem and there is no way to play it as smoothly as a natural smear. You play through a partial. All by itself you would hear a break. With other stuff going on it is hard to hear the break. If you listen carefully you will hear the break in the smear of the forth bone ( furthest left) at about the 18 or 19th second of the piece. So you would start the C in 6th and go to the G in 4th as smoothly as possible. Not a great smear unfortunately. Happens more often when non trombone players write the parts, but if the music requires it you do the best you can.
