I feel like the alternate fire modes kinda lived on in Duke 64 with the different ammo types
Right. Even the plasma shotgun and the expander made it into that version. Seems like it took all the original weapon concept from the beta version.
That early 2001 build of Duke Nukem Forever had alternate ammo types and a mapped altfire button that doesn’t seem to do much
I have an original big box copy of duke 3D and the plasma gun is shown in the screenshots on the back of the box. As a kid it drove me crazy trying to find it in game.
I didn’t know that the Aliens originally sounded like Riptor from Killer Instinct in the Beta. Lol
interesting that they kept the beta pistol's alt fire sound for the final version's default firing sound
I think the weapon selection in Duke64 is better with there being a grenade launcher, dual MP5s and a fully implemented Plasma cannon with a orgasmic charge attack, not to mention the alternative ammo types that act as temporary power ups for those weapons.
I swear I hear the sound effects from Marathon in the song playing in the background when you be talking about the flame thrower. Anyway, cool vid man!
the alternate firing mode of the plasma gun seems to use the sound of the Photon Torpedos fom Star Trek: The Next Generation
No wonder, the guys at 3D Realms were big fans of Star Trek. Lunar Apocalypse in Duke 3D has several references to it, one level literally being a Star Trek ship.
Great video on the Weapon Roster.
Huh, neat to see how much of this bled over into Duke 64 and its alt ammos.
Damn, watching that beta footage reminded me of playing Duke 3D in the 90's. I mean, the game hasn't changed much, but with the texture upscaling and sound improvement that came post version 1.3 it just lost some of that 90's chunkiness. I used to think this feeling was just my fuzzy childhood memories, but after watching the footage, I can confidently confirm that it's really a thing.
I think with the flamethrower's alternate fire mode, the fireball was "attached" the the player's line of sight on the x axis, so it would hover to the left or to the right depending on where you turned your camera. At least, that what I've gathered from the showcase.
While it's cool Duke 3D had alternate firing modes as early as late 1995, I can understand their exclusion, since most of them are just better versions of the normal firing mode which means the standard one is useless, thus redundant. I guess they would improve upon the idea for Shadow Warrior and Blood, which actually do "proper" alternate firing modes.
Blood was an interesting case because it was started in preproduction by Apogee/3D Realms but it would be Monolith Productions who would finish it and release it
I see why they changed all the betas weapons. They all seem very broken and some has an alt fire mode that doesn't make any sense to have them in the first place.
They could have at least left the plasma gun in, but turned it into a single-barrel machine gun, instead of the Ripper. I mean, the Ripper is fine, but it always looked so confusing with that tiny green screen on top that never did anything.
Unless any of the Duke 3D beta builds get leaked on 4chan in the future, these builds will remain in the hands of the developers that worked on the game.
gran turismo music rocks
7:02 It also has ice frozen on it as the freeze thrower.
cool stuff man. but what's the song at the end of the video again? (the conclusion part) i'm trying to remember it
very cool
Good video! I did not know DN3D had different weapon roster.
Btw, what's the song name you used in the beginning of the video (showcasing the pistol, to be precise.)
I agree...
WHAT THE FUCK?!
I too, like my weapons having frying modes.
When someone mentions "the elephant in the room," they are referring to a topic that everyone is trying to avoid discussing. Just so you know.
Why do the alien grunts sound like Riptor from Killer Instinct?
i had a lazer toy gun that had the alt fire sound .. same exact sound
A issue between 3D Realms and Gearbox? But doesn't Gearbox own Duke Nukem now?
Whats a point of gearbox owning Duke nukem if their not going to do anything with it
What is the name of the saxophone music in this video?
What sorce port was in the video for b roll footage, not the weapons testing stuff
I got this game on my iPad,
Why do they call it greasy basterd version?
Because Randy Pitchford was involved not to mention the world tour version is pretty janky.
Quoting ciiv11?
I LIKE TO GET IT NOW
What you mean that the beta wasn't released. Lame duke exists.... And was released in 1997. You Didn't even mention that
There are more beta builds of Duke Nukem 3D, these are from a 1995 build that are not released for the public yet, not the lameduke
Hopefully x0r_jmp has the beta builds of Duke Nukem 3D in their hands, and come to think of it, it seems that the group x0r_jmp consists of ex-Embracers Group employees that are leaking 3D Realms beta builds.
----- DISCLAIMER -----
I DO NOT OWN the beta builds of Duke 3D as it actually impossible to obtain, also don't try to ask the folks from Duke4 about the beta builds and if they can give you the beta builds as they can't do that due to the conflict between 3DRealms and Gearbox.
