What are you thinking?? Having two hot girls in a video aimed at a bunch of repressed geeks? I watched the whole video and I don't remember a thing about it. (Were they baking a raspberry pie?)
Nice tip for the Linux command line: When typing filenames (of files that already exist) or package names, you can type just the first few characters and then hit the TAB key. If it can work out what you're trying to type - as there's only one filename / package name that you could mean - then it'll auto-complete it for you. If it's ambiguous - more than one file / package could match what you've typed so far - then you can hold TAB and it'll show a list of matches. Type a few more characters, until it's unique and it knows what you want, then hit TAB to auto-complete it. This not only speeds up typing commands, but it means you don't have to get filenames and packages exactly right. Just the first few characters and hit TAB for auto-complete. So you could have typed, say, "sudo apt install choc" and then hit TAB. If "chocolate-doom" is the only package that fits "choc*" then it'll just auto-complete it. If there's a few packages that starts "choc" then holding TAB will give you a list of the matches - type enough to make it unique, so the command line understands which one you mean, and it'll then auto-complete. (Particularly with "apt", as there's an awful lot of packages, if the list of matches is a bit on the ginormous side - like, try "lib" and hit TAB, as there's tons of library packages that start with "lib" - then it'll rather say "list all 158 possibilities (y / n)?" and you hit "y" to see the list. This is just because, you know, the list of matches could be truly massive, so it does have a built-in "are you sure?" and paging for very long lists.) The command line also has a history too. If you press up arrow then it'll step back in the command history (and down arrow, as you might guess, does the opposite and steps forward in the command history), so if you've typed it before, then you can call it back up. Very useful if you just made a small typo - up arrow to get the last command back again and then edit it to what it should have been then hit Enter. The TAB auto-complete and history feature can make using the command line a bit faster and more convenient.
Also, interesting fact. DOOM originally used the arrow keys, rather than WASD, to control the character. While this might feel a bit awkward for a right-handed person - as you've got to reach over with your left hand for the arrow keys on most PC keyboards - John Carmack, who coded DOOM, is left handed. So, for him, with his mouse on the left side of him, and arrow keys under his right hand, this was perfectly natural and that's how he coded it. But, yeah, most modern games prefer the "WASD" keys instead, these days, because most people are right-handed. Although, the best games account for both righties and South paws alike, by allowing either "WASD" or arrow keys (or, you know, just provide a "define keys" options screen to set it how you like). So, in fairness to LadyFractic, John Carmack's default layout is actually a left-handed layout and that is a bit awkward for right-handers.
@@klaxoncow Actually controlling movement with the arrow keys in Doom can be right handed since in the early days, I didn't use mouse for doom, and used the left hand to control left/right strafe using the comma and period keys. Remember doom did not have a concept of aiming up or down, just side to side, so the extra control to aim with the mouse wasn't as necessary. It was only when Quake came out that up and down aiming became possible/needed.
I really love Perifractic, his wife, Ladyfratic, and their doggos. I recently lost my brother (he was my best friend in the entire world), and I have been looking to fun, feel-good videos like these to cheer me up. Thank you, Retro Recipes, for being there for me in this dark time in my life. Love you guys; blessings to you all.
I’m sorry to hear that. Lost my mom to stage 4 in October. Dads fighting stage 4 now….. and once he’s gone I’m alone at 33. No family. UA-cam and content nerds have kept me alive these past few years
Sorry that you lost your Brother, I lost my brother in 2005 and while it never get's better, it certainly helps that I can look back and be reminded about the good time we both had in the 80's playing on our Commodore 64.
Wow so much went wrong! From 3D print jobs failing causing multiple-day setbacks, to Ladyfractic cutting her hands on the computer pieces, breaking the monitor ribbon cable, the keyboard not working over USB, the monitor orientation being upside-down, and the OS constant crashing, this series has it all! Thank you for showing us that with hard work and perseverance, you too can run the shareware version of Doom on an 8-inch screen! Jokes aside, thank you for a super entertaining & informative build series. Looking forward to what's next, maybe a demonstration of the Gameboy sewing machine?
So cool seeing it in action, I really wanted my own - it’d make a great gift for my nephews ☺️ Also - nice to see the advert for Pikuma, I can vouch for the 3D course, I’ve signed up for the 6502 course after 🙂 Nice work!
Thank you! I recommend printing your own while of course learning from my printing mistakes! That’s also great to hear about Pikuma. It’s a company we really believe in and feel it aligns with our message. - LF
As much as I was indifferent to RGB-lights-on-everything when it first came out, I cannot deny the subdued brilliance of that keyboard in this build. So great and thanks for sharing all of this with us.
you managed to put 5 cable into 3 components in just about an hour, without destroying ALL of them. congrats and it went really fast from "we don't need this guy" to "darling, can you help us, we're lost already"
Fantastic job Lady F! Really appreciated seeing all of the hiccups. Half the battle on a project like this is not sweating the setbacks so thanks for showing how to do it right. Also loved the Doom level 1 treat at the end.
Kinda cool how far SBC's have come. In a few years every kid will be making their own robots, meanwhile, I still haven't achieved Elite rank in Elite on the C64...
I really enjoy watching people deal with hurdles (self-induced or not) that occur during their projects. Makes me feel less alone in that regard. I laughed several times during this video. Don't worry, they were all "sympathy laughs"!
I am so glad! We firmly stand behind not sugar coating our projects. It's not realistic and I feel it's misleading. Also I am very accident prone and have to laugh at it 😆- LF
I absolutely adore your channel. I stumbled upon the Callisto 2 a few days ago while looking through Retro Terminal STLs for a “home library” digital card catalogue build. I am extremely excited to see the Fractal’s build. Time to get the slicer spooled up. Thanks for demo!

I think that was an amazing job. Well done to Ladyfractic, Josefractic and Mr Ladyfractic. It might be nice to polish up the Dierya keyboard with some retro style key caps to give the full retro effect. Maybe a paint job on the case as well? Still, this was a great episode. P.S. I'm not sure that screen is designed for middle-aged+ eyes to look at. Magnifying glass at the ready for older users to read the screen. Either that or get Specsavers as a sponsor.
The key caps is a good idea. As for painting it, I made sure to choose a filament that was already the preferred shade of Retro Beige. The screen seems like it isn't designed for anyone over the age of 12! 😆- LF
@@RetroRecipes Fair enough. Retro beige is a good choice. Enjoy typing on the Dierya, which looks very like the Royal Kludge 61 keyboard I bought a few years ago.

I imagine I'm not the first person to say this, but the "-y" at the end of that apt command is a flag that allows you to skip all the y/n questions that may be asked, and just answers "y" for everything. If you had put a space between "chocolate-doom" and "-y" it would've run the same, just without asking you any questions. Love the videos, keep doing your thing.
You did! I referred to it in the video at 16:54 because I remembered your comment. I will say the reason I plugged it in that way was because you would typically plug them in with the cable facing downward, even though this one was weirdly opposite. I'd never seen one like that before. - LF

I tried out blue keyswitches, too clicky for me. I prefer brown key-switches, red ones are too linear - I need to feel the bump with brown. Luckily nothing to do with Dierya, hahaha!
I'm printing mine right now, started the day before yesterday. All goes well, so far. My third big part is almost done, just in time before getting out of filament. Ordered the same colour (silver) today. I try to print the pins and monitor parts this evening, I think there's just enough for that. Then the three other big parts. I'm not very experienced in 3D- printing, but I'm stunned of the results on my Creality Ender 3D Pro. I like the videos of both of you, certainly the ones about Knightrider. Remember. Original Doom didn't allow the player to look/aim up and down, nor jump, so WASD controls wasn't a thing yet for first person shooters when Doom was new in the mid 90s. You can rebind keys to do that.
I wish I could've laughed at the "hide the paint harold" smile at 18:50 but that has happened to me too and I really felt the pain. Must be really frustrating especially when you are trying to film a video. Thanks for keeping it in the final edit. It feels much more real when you can see that building stuff has it's struggles.
A treat! Fighting through some adversity, working with friends (and who doesn't like a visit from Josie??), and having some fun after final success? Fun video. And even if that keyboard name is a bit dubious, the sound and lighting are still calling out to me! :-) But seriously, thx for an upbeat video with some humour.
I love you guys!!!! Been looking for exactly this kind of case for a while. Plus the thingverse link shows a slightly larger version for a slightly bigger monitor. Definitely gonna use this to rebuild my home file server.
It's done! It works! It's gorgeous and it plays DOOM! Congrats! But it was such a stressful episode. Can wait for the next retro-adventures of Ladyfractic, Josiefractic and MuscleBoundHunk.
I thought when the banana-for-scale was produced we'd get the "Benny Hill" theme again ;) The only trouble with classic games (esp Doom) is that you concentrate so hard you forget to blink, hence the blight of dry-eye syndrome amongst us Retro gamers lol Loved the vid - long live retro! :)
Where did you get the model for that? Have you seen the scifi TV show severance? At the main characters work they have 4 cubicles set up in an office and they're all using Data general dasher terminals but the weird operating system that's on them is added in post. After the first season I really wanted to 3d print the chasis and put a raspberry pi/screen/etc inside with some animation and sounds from the show. This looks really cool.
It's hardly surprising that the keyboard worked straight away, while the monitor was causing trouble. Nothing stands in the way of Dierya! Whoops, just got to the bit where the keyboard didn't work...I suppose another diarrhoea joke is needed! The Doom section reminded me of times when I've watched my brother play FPS's, and of how frustrating it can be for both involved :) PeriFractic pronounces "lever" quite oddly @38:57; I would blame being in the USA for too long but I don't think they, or anyone else, uses that pronunciation :) Must be down to computer troubleshooting stress!

"Because I was inverted" :D
It's done! It works! It's gorgeous and it plays DOOM! Congrats!
But it was such a stressful episode.
Can wait for the next retro-adventures of Ladyfractic, Josiefractic and MuscleBoundHunk.
That was a lot of fun 💯😊
I feel that we were never properly introduced to Josie.
Who is she? She is part of the fractic family, but which part?
She is a good friend of ours and naturally became a part of the Retro Recipes Fractic Family - LF
Oh, I see. Thanks for letting us know! You three are the best! Thanks a lot for all the entertaining videos! ❤️
18:26 she surpasses Linus.....😐
Thank you very much for that, very good episode.
You give off that teacher/trainer vibe
Nice Retropi edition, which one is it?
It looks just like the terminal I learned to program on. Except for the dancing keyboard and the multi-color monitor.
15:06 Puppyfractic2: "me hear too!" Bless
Beautiful LadyFractic
Where did you get the model for that? Have you seen the scifi TV show severance? At the main characters work they have 4 cubicles set up in an office and they're all using Data general dasher terminals but the weird operating system that's on them is added in post. After the first season I really wanted to 3d print the chasis and put a raspberry pi/screen/etc inside with some animation and sounds from the show. This looks really cool.
Links in description 👍🕹️
doom 1 and 2 on a pi are fantastic.i have them running on my gpi case
hmm you've got to watch how hard you tug cables otherwise they just pop off ☺. and thanks for the aussie screen alignment made reading a lot easier
You look like Gordon Freeman with glasses dude.
I’ll take it
Cheers from Detroit!
Great video, what would home computing be without crashes and hours of tinkering 👍😂
I'd love to get this in a TRS-80 Model 100-inspired case.
Mr lady frantic. That’s Perfect 😂
jossiefractic’s beauty is miss world class
