In case you didnt know the backstory, bastion is the last remaining bastion unit in the world as he had powered down in the forest and was never found. That battle was the german defense force with the help of the crusaders aka reinhardt bros holding the line from the omnic invasion. Many were slaughtered in the fight but due to their brave actions they turned the war in germany.
Bastion had ptsd because the woodpecker sounded like gunfire. Thats why he went into turret mode and aimed at really nothing

Forgot to say that the reinhardt looking guy in the war flashback who used the fireball then the barrier was reinhardts mentor and the leader of the crusaders i believe.
He and most of the crusaders made a last stand at the castle that is the new map in the september update coming soon.
As well now that i think about it, the reason why he was heading towards that city but didnt know why was because his mission processors or something like that were damaged, and thats why he went into battle mode(red eye) after he saw that robots memory.
Ganymede(the bird) was the thing bastion first saw when he woke up and ganymede at the end with the stick was talking about we can head back and rebuild(if you look closely, its the stick that bastion was going to put on his nest), and thats why he went back into his recon mode(blue eye)

just want to add, the theme behind this episode was ptsd, the shit a guy would feel and a possible way to bring the guy out of it.
There really was no theme, and it's kinda impossible for a robot to have PTSD. It's more of a programming protocol. He heard gunfire and his defenses were actived
+Silverman not litteral ptsd, plus if we are talking about protocols and so on, tge both would have ignored the bird all together :p
thebiggeridiot It's a programming defect. Most bastions were hacked during the one era which made them peaceful afterwards, although they still have their combat protocols deep inside
