    the author of Lolita was a victim of CSA so the book is very much written for you to hate the protagonist and be disgusted by him but Hollywood romanticized it and dressed it up as some sort of forbidden love when it was in fact meant to be a horror from the perspective of the monster.

    omg yesss i'm so excited to see your journey, you have to do it chronologically, starting with:
    * Born To Die, then the 3 deluxe tracks ("Without You", "Lolita" and "Lucky Ones"), and i'm sad that you missed those :(
    * Paradise EP
    * Ultraviolence (and its deluxe tracks, including "Is This Happiness" and "Flipside")
    * Honeymoon
    * Lust For Life
    * NFR
    * Chemtarils
    * Blue Banisters
    * Ocean Blvd
    I hope you like this great path that you are about to go through, it is a very gratifying experience, an artist with good lyrics and complex melodies, a very chameleonic voice and a lot of meaning and intention of each sound and tone.

    girls, lanas song may sound uncomfortable sometimes. she sings about abusive relationships a lot. and people tend to understand she's romantinzing but she's literally just speaking about her experiences. you'll see how mature she gets on the last albuns, it's incredible 😭 NFR is one of the best albuns ever made and after this one it's new world for her. I'm also new to Lana but to me, in radio, when she says "sweet like cinnamon" I think about the fact that cinnamon is actually quite bitter when on it's own. So life sweet like cinnamon means that it's actually a bitter life and the dream that she's living in (meaning the fame and all that) isn't so good in retrospective.

    Video games was the first single that came out, and in the 2010’s hyper pop was super popular, but when the video game mv came out people were shocked and fell in love. People were so excited for her album and usually albums disappoint after a popular single comes out but for her first album everyone LOVED it, and she’s the first female artist for every song on an album to have over 100 mill streams (born to die). She’s also the 3rd female artist to have an album on billboard 200 for 300 weeks and the 2nd female artist to have an album on billboard 200 for over 400 weeks. The album currently is almost at 500 weeks. It’s insane how much born to die achieved, great album

    Ok nerd with an English degree here, just have to jump in and comment on Lolita (the novel). It def does NOT condone the p*dophilic relationship. While it's told by the predator, it's framed as him pleading his case to a jury, and is meant to be an exploration of the psyche of someone delusional enough to think he can be in love with a 12 year old - and that she loves him back. He's an unreliable narrator, and you're meant to look past his framing of the situation and see how messed up it is, and how much damage it has done to Lolita, who is a victim of grooming. Actually highly recommend the book, it's a classic. Lana plays with the Lolita image in a way that makes it her own, while drawing on its vibe of the romanticisation of skeezy circumstances. Ok that's all, thanks for the reaction guys 😊

    The deepest part of Lana is her representing all of the broken youth and young adults growing into something whole again. She didn’t glamorize it… she was just glamorous… she reflected how we wore our brokenness as a crown of jewels as to not be judged by society at large. If you grew up without trauma, count your blessings that you haven’t become a brilliant artist bc of it. Trauma birth artists… been this way since time immemorial. I’m so proud of Lana and myself for growing up and out the trauma. She validated me. I’m 38 now. I have followed her growth along with her. My reason for loving Lana now is much deeper than the vintage modern audio and visual aesthetic that I fell in love with when I was younger. I love that y’all seem bubbly and superficial but have executed perfectly breaking down the lyrics. I’m jealous that BTD will be on your summer playlist lol

    Btw, Lana had alcohol and drugs addiction and was sent to boarding school at 14 to get sorber. At 14, thats so sad. At 15/16 she went off, but her mom didn't allowed her to come back home and sent her to live with a family in Spain, she was literally at the airplane and was her 16 birthday, and someone brought her a little cake with "sweet sixteen" written on it, as she though "ok, that's sweet, but.. Will I ever be able to come back home?" after that, she never had a good relation with her mother.

    Listen to Off to the Races again with the Lolita reference in mind. You will notice that Lana's tone is different between the verses and chorus. In the verses, her voice is very nonchalant and emotionless as she talks about her "flat broke down life" and the things she is doing just to please the older man she is with (she almost sounds bored). In the chorus, her voice is lighter, sweeter because she is acting like a damsel in distress, again to please the older man. In a way, Lana is retelling Lolita's story as a clever young girl who manipulates the older man out of his money, instead of the victim that most people make Lolita out to be after reading the book.

    Hi, so one take that I've seen on Born to Die's Off to the Races, Carmen (and the song Lolita from the Deluxe edition) is that they're all songs written based on Nabokov's novel, Lolita - but from Dolores' perspective. Carmen in particular is a song they sing together in the book, and there's a double meaning referencing both Lana's personal alcoholism but it's through the metaphor of the abuse and exploitation Dolores experiences in Lolita. I've also seen it mentioned that "Carmen" is a prophecy of Lana if she didn't get her drinking under control, mirroring the "prophecy" aka foreshadowing that the song Carmen in Lolita brings to the story (referring to a novella of the same name by Merimée which inspired Bizet's opera). There are so many literary and cultural references in this album, that with every listen there's another way to interpret her music and it never gets boring!

    And Having people actually understanding that lana was young and was reflecting about her youth (crazy as f.) On this album, and not taking everything literally was ❤.
    That's why I also love TIWMUGirls, it shows us that she was leaving her teenager era and reflecting about her persona as an artist, as a woman, ready to grow and learn with all that painful part of her life.

      It must had been souch a "trauma" for a young girl, but at the same time, it was the moment that Lana was able to be an artist, and realized she would never come back to that old reality. (Ps: my interpretation)

      Although this album does deal with some themes from her teenage years (mainly This Is What…), it’s largely about her relationships beyond 20

    good luck and godspeed on your lana journey!
    make sure you dont skip over the Paradise ep before jumping into her next album! it earns its own little place in her discography! its one of her best sounds, its sonically similar to BTD but different enough that it offers a softer transition into her even darker blues and jazz inspired album Ultraviolence. Paradise even has its own visual content; Ride video has monologues that are life changing, Blue Velvet was featured in an H&M commercial and it became the unofficial music video, great aesthetics! then there's Tropico which she created herself and of course stars in, its a short film featuring 3 of her songs and spoken word voiceovers by lana. it tells a cohesive story in its own del way, but there's a lot of metaphors and allusions, but gorge to watch nonetheless
    its a great era that gives us everything with so few songs. I love watching these, can't wait! ❣

We would love to hear about it. Also I’m sure some one will definitely give u insight in the comments about new perspective.

    I can’t wait to see your journey through her albums. But take time in between each one so you can sit with each! Don’t rush through and overload yourself!

And I love how much you dissect the songs and talk about the meaning. Definitely subscribing and checking out more of your videos. Can't wait to see your journey through Lana's music. She's similar to Taylor in that the writing is her first priority.

    Subscribing to watch your Lana jourrney. It's always so cool to watch people listening to my favourite music for the first time and I often find myself noticing or learning new things when doing so.
    For example, after nearly a decade of listening to Lana, I'd never made the connection between Diet Mountain Dew and "you're no good for me, but baby I want you."
