Thank you so much. I'm a right handed and left eye dominant. Ive never thought of putting my head on the line of aim first and my right foot later. This helps so much!
Great video, this stance, sighting issue has driven me crazy over the last few years. I’m right handed left eye dominant and my natural way of lining up a shot was through the centre of my torso and then just fall into the shot naturally and I could play quite well regular 30+ breaks, occasional 50 breaks. At some point a few years ago I decided i wanted to improve and that the way to do this was to change my stance and stand like the modern top pros as you give examples of in this vid. Anyway to cut a long story short it all but ruined my game, I found that I couldn’t sight the shot properly, felt off balance, just didn’t feel right for me. For some reason I stuck with this and became obsessed with where my right foot was and some nights I would struggle to make a break in double figures and it destroyed my confidence. I stopped playing for a while but have recently started again and just trying to fall into the shot naturally again and I’m improving again slowly. I probably stand with my right heel just outside the line of aim which feels a natural way to keep my left eye on the line of the shot. So even if this might be slightly wrong I’m going to stick to it now!
What a great, detailed video. Thanks Steve! After three months of playing, I'm getting flexible enough that my right knee doesn't bother me, but my right hip still does. After playing a couple hours I find that I start bending the back knee a bit to save my hip.
You showed me that I was right handed- left eye dominant (I worked out that I was right handed myself 🤣).. it forces me to keep my head on line as you said, I practiced this on long blues. I still need alot of work but if I concentrate on my stance then I miss more often but if I concentrate on just keeping my head on the line my eye was on, then I contact the object ball where I want alot more often.. still miss lol... but I know I got on the line I chose correctly
Some coaches say that standing square pre-shot is best and that eye dominance is not really important. IMHO after testing when I play best and measuring my cue, feet, head position etc with a laser and several cameras as carefully and accurately as possible - the result is that I make as many small variables/mistakes in my cue action when I'm playing well, as when I'm missing lots of balls. Then there's how I play on the practice table, and how I play against an opponent - that's literally a totally different ballgame. It would be nice to suggest that you can pot more balls with the correct technique, and it would follow that getting a good technique would quickly make you into a better player. IMHO it doesn't work like that, as I have spent the last 18 months with many hours daily practice and have changed almost everything about my cue action now. I still miss about almost the same amount of balls as before. I still lose/win the same to players who have not spent any time on their technique, and my break is about the same as before. In that time I've got a little better at the game as you would expect, but not because my cue action is very nice now - it's more because I have spent many hours at the table trying to figure out what makes them go in! and I have seen more balls go into pockets the correct way. I think if I had spent that same amount of time relaxing with my natural way to play the game, instead of consciously trying to match some robotic ideal of a perfect player and cue action, measuring and changing everything, grip, muscle movement, head position, stance, angle of my arms, feathers, backstroke, follow thru etc. etc. I might have had time to learn even more angles. I'm pretty sure that even if you could have a 100% consistent and 'perfect' cue action, you would still be slightly inconsistent on the angle to some degree and still miss.
Great video Steve. However, i am right eye dominant and right handed. Using the baulk line as a guide i can't get my cue to cover the baulk line when i place my right foot on the line of the shot. From the tip to about 18 inches up the cue it looks pretty good but by the time you reach the side cushion my cue is 3/4 of a cues width to the right. The only way i can correct this is to stand behind the shot imagining the line of aim using the centre of my body then placing the cue on that line and letting the feet find a stable position not thinking too much of their position. 🤷♂️
I’ve always found it awkward standing behind the shot with my right foot on (what I think) is the line of aim but trying to look with my left eye being left eye dominant. I’ll try being more to the centre and see how I fair. I also think that body shape needs to be taken into consideration because standing square I physically would struggle with being not exactly slim ha I am more of the older style to allow me to cue straighter. Good stuff as always though
I also find it easier to view the shot line in the center. I haven't tested which eye is dominant, but it just looks better that way, and feels more relaxed than leaning to one side.

This is very interesting to me Steve asIve been watching your videos and Nik Barrows for approach. Ive been throwing my shoulder into the shot first placing my feet last. But watching this I think ive made a mistake. I dont think ive been placing my right foot inside on the actual line of shot. (Right hand left dom). This may be causing me to cue across the ball so thanks steve. I think ive neglected the foot while focusing on the shoulders.
im right handed right eye dominant and i align and sight the line of aim with middle of my body and then i stance like traditional way. but the problem is when i am down the shots look offline and my cue butt is towards left and i put right hand side all the time. i m sure i used to align and sight the shot with my right leg on line of aim and leaning to the right 8 years ago before i saw my first coach, then he without asking me about my dominant eyes etc, he said just lineup with middle of your body, and here we go after 8 years i have not improved. so now im totally lost, please help me.
Thank you Steve! Just decided to work on my stance again and found this perfectly helpful. I have some 'bad' movement while my final cue delivery and I thing it is because my weight ist mostly on my straight leg. What I see is that the traditional stance (not square one) rotates the hips more , such that one gets almost all weight on the left foot. Obviously the best is to stand balanced, however what is worse: more weight on the bend or more weight on the straight leg? I just try to figure out if I change my stance will it remove my movements I have in my delivery? They are bugging me alot and I don't know where they are coming from. Play regular 20-50 breaks.

I would change so as you walk in you step slightly to the left which will put the cue on line. Keep the head on the left as you wank in, and just take that slight sidestep as you do the walk in. Then you can get the cue on the line, have the chest contact, and have a proper delivery.

Is it possible to still play dispite neck problems I've had a recent herniated disc In c5/6 wud like to play again but it's painful for any length of time or is it time to get the fishing rods out and the cue retired😞
Hello. I'm my experience you will still be able to play. I would see an Osteopath and get some advice and treatment. But even if you need to have the chin slightly off the cue and not flex the neck as much, you will certainly still be able to play. Good luck 👍🙂
Force yourself to control the cue and NOT worry about the shot. Cue control is the key. Get that right, and the results on the table take care of themselves.
Hi barton im playing snooker now for over than one year and my highest break is still 38💔. However, players told me that when i get down to the shot my cue tip is far away from the cue ball, how should i fix this problem. Also i grap the cue from the end.
I’m over 6’ 6” tall. The only way I can get down low enough is to really bend both knees. This goes against keeping the right leg straight . Any tips to help please?
@@doron4129 probably Robin Hull. He isn't on tour now but was 4-5 years ago. I don't know his exact height, but if you look him up, he is very tall... and actually has his right leg straight.
What's amusing about him shooting out of right handed and left eye dominant is supposedly the vision center would be off. In fact he returned the cue ball to the tip shooting off his right eye OR left eye. lol The point being the vision center made NO difference. Maybe he's just talented. lol I certainly find it more awkward being right eye dominant and left handed to line up perfectly with the head facing straight ahead. Snooker Gym also mentions how the left shoulder for a right hander turns at the same time as the right foot steps forward...so both feet do NOT have to be planted for the non-cueing shoulder to start it's turn. Whether this is right or not I wouldn't know. I do find when I plant the feet first, then go about twisting I tend to move the cueing shoulder also. ua-cam.com/video/XnRltoUrh3w/v-deo.html What is your analysis of Snooker Gym's (Nic Barrow) method and are there problems with it?

As i walk in to the shot, the cue tip goes past the cueball top and as i am about to get down i pull the cue back to bring the cue tip behind the cue ball center. and this is causing alignment problem because the cue butt goes towards left.
when i try to put the cue tip behind the cueball and get down, i have no alignment problem. that is how i figured out this is cuasing the alignment problem
so basically i put my right foot on line of aim as i walk in, i put the left leg at the same time synced with the cue arm goes online of aim with the cue, but the cue shaft is about 2 inches beyond the white, so as i am getting down i pull the cue back to bring it behind the cueball, so once i am fully down. the cue tip is behind the cue ball.

i'm right handed, and right eye dominate, but play left handed bc I didn't know what I was doing when I started! I tried playing right handed and it just feels off now, any suggestions?
Hi what bothers me is when I put foot on line get down Vue on table but I'm set up but so much weight on my right foot it's uncomfortable is this normal
Great work
Thank You So Much From Pakistan 🇵🇰
My elbow is starting to fall out..kindly make some videos regarding it on how to make a correction.
My placement is getting good, long potting getting weak. Any suggestion?
Hello sir how to know which eye is dominant
Hi nice video , well explained , i wonder if u do video analyse
Is it possible to still play dispite neck problems I've had a recent herniated disc In c5/6 wud like to play again but it's painful for any length of time or is it time to get the fishing rods out and the cue retired😞
Hello. I'm my experience you will still be able to play.
I would see an Osteopath and get some advice and treatment. But even if you need to have the chin slightly off the cue and not flex the neck as much, you will certainly still be able to play.
Good luck 👍🙂
What about stances for left handed players?
Hi Steve,
When i try and go full stroke i.e in a screw stroke i end up jostling cue in the air (help)
Regards Ivor Flowers
Force yourself to control the cue and NOT worry about the shot. Cue control is the key. Get that right, and the results on the table take care of themselves.
@@BartonSnooker thanks Steve, must come over and have some proper lessons with you much appreciated
Master!! I have no confident to see the perfect aiming line between the cue ball and object ball
The more you practice the more you will see the angle. Have faith. You will learn it!
Too much thanks from Pakistan 🇵🇰
Hi barton im playing snooker now for over than one year and my highest break is still 38💔. However, players told me that when i get down to the shot my cue tip is far away from the cue ball, how should i fix this problem. Also i grap the cue from the end.
I would say practice practice practice feathering even to the point of lightly touching the white with the tip very very softly whilst in practice 😊👍
And grip the cue so your grip arm is parallel to the floor. Good luck 👌
How I would know that I am which eye dominant??
Great...👍👍
As always ❤️
I’m over 6’ 6” tall. The only way I can get down low enough is to really bend both knees. This goes against keeping the right leg straight
. Any tips to help please?
Kyren wilson does the same
Really tall players often do need to bend the leg. I'll try and do a follow-up video.
@@BartonSnooker Great, thank you. Out of curiosity, who is the tallest professional in recent years since the Steve Davis era.
@@doron4129 probably Robin Hull. He isn't on tour now but was 4-5 years ago. I don't know his exact height, but if you look him up, he is very tall... and actually has his right leg straight.
PS Happy to be your unpaid model for the video!
What's amusing about him shooting out of right handed and left eye dominant is supposedly the vision center would be off. In fact he returned the cue ball to the tip shooting off his right eye OR left eye. lol The point being the vision center made NO difference. Maybe he's just talented. lol
I certainly find it more awkward being right eye dominant and left handed to line up perfectly with the head facing straight ahead.
Snooker Gym also mentions how the left shoulder for a right hander turns at the same time as the right foot steps forward...so both feet do NOT have to be planted for the non-cueing shoulder to start it's turn. Whether this is right or not I wouldn't know. I do find when I plant the feet first, then go about twisting I tend to move the cueing shoulder also. ua-cam.com/video/XnRltoUrh3w/v-deo.html
What is your analysis of Snooker Gym's (Nic Barrow) method and are there problems with it?
Hi Steve, first time commenting. When you mentioned those players, you showed photos of their stance. But.... why didn't you show Shaun Murphy and Steve Davis's photos. :-)
Just because I couldn't quickly find a neat picture while I was editing the video 😆. No other reason. And I was only giving some examples, so I didn't need to show every single one.
Thanks a lot for watching 🙂
@@BartonSnooker hahahaha. I was watching and i thought hey... where are those 2 guys' photos....
Anyway, nice talking to you :-)
It would be good if I met this teacher when I was young
What foot is most if your weight on?

I might have solved the main issue, why my snooker is in the bin at the moment. Thankyou.
Great video again Steve!😃I've been back playing snooker for 3 weeks or so since the liffing of lockdown Steve😃I'm planning to come and see you sometime in July! I will contact you Steve through your email 😊Best wishes to you! Ian
Hi Ian! Great to hear you're back on the table. I'm almost fully booked for July already, so let me know as soon as you can and we can get a date booked in 👍👍😃
@@BartonSnooker will do Steve! I'll let you know asap 😊I will come for a 2 hour lesson instead of 1 hour 😊because of the distance I'm travelling Steve 😃looking forward to your input and knowledge. Ian
Was doing a lot of this just by instinct (well pretending I was a pro and copying really) but now I know I'll be trying to refine things. Great video as always. (video idea: table and cue care.) you've prob done this at some point I'd guess Tho. Thanks again
I guess it’s more a traditional stance for me but being 6’3” I have to bend both legs...
Yup, and a seriously sore neck from bending it about 100 degrees while shooting. There are advantages AND disadvantages to being tall. Reach is one advantage.
@@MrJdsenior yep I like the reach capability John, and with my snooker spex it makes it easier when bending the neck...albeit with one or two Dennis Taylor jokes lol

Good ❣️

You'll see some pros have a bend in their legs such as ronnie, but you'll see others have a straight leg such as ronnie 🤣🙈 ronnie ronnie if you ronnie and ronnie is ronnie so it's ronnie
