I recently just got diagnosed with adhd at 27 years old. The diagnosis was previously misdiagnosed as depression/bipolar disorder and struggled my whole life being force fed SSRI medication. My world was rocked when I was told "nah, you just have adhd and anxiety". Listening to Jeremy talk about adhd so openly has been so helpful, I feel so heard

I have birthed two little humans and I’ve realized that I prefer male doctors and nurse to females when it comes to my girly bits BECAUSE women nurses and doctors are rough! They’ve probably birthed before and they are like “I survived this, so you can survive this” kind of attitude. Whereas men as SO gentle! And check so often on if you’re ok! It’s something they’ll never fully understand and so they kinda assume it’s horrific. So when you do decide to birth a human, I strongly suggest you go with a male doctor!

I’m 28 and it’s been 9 months on a waitlist with an organisation for an ADHD assessment and that was the quicker route than a 2-3 year wait on the NHS. I always assumed I couldn’t have adhd as no one picked it up when I was at school but didn’t know about the masking in women. I have anxiety and depression and have been on antidepressants for 10 years but have no idea if that’s alongside or caused by potential adhd but I know medications are different in the UK (no adderall here I don’t believe) but there’s shortages here too so who knows how that will go. It’s really great hearing from Jeremy’s perspective on adhd and Lauren’s on the SSRI/SNRI side and knowing it’s complicated for everyone else too so thank you so much for sharing. 💜

My male OBGYN is incredible and empathetic especially when it comes to my endometriosis. And my endometriosis surgeon was the leading specialist in the fibroid and endo removal. Both of them have been incredible. Have hated a lot of the women because of their lack of empathy actually

Jeremy my psychiatrist specializes in neurochemistry balance prior to prescribing stimulants. I did tests for vitamin deficiencies, cranial pressure, etc. prior to getting adhd meds and it changed my life. We stabilized my baseline and were left with my actual ADHD symptoms, not just symptoms made worse by deficiencies.

I have the kindest male OBGYN and I would never give him up he talks about Disney with me while looking at my girly bits because he knows my anxiety is awful at the doctors and he’s an AP holder HOWEVER that man sucks at inserting IUDs and missed idk how that happened but it did that’s the only thing I’d change
If he was about 30 years younger I’d be uncomfy

Interestingly enough the female gynos I’ve seen were more callous than the male gynos I’ve seen. I had a male OB when I had my son and he was like in his 40s and he was awesome. Men’s ability to compartmentalize is baffling. He was empathetic and straight shooting with my concerns were the female doctors were like get over it it’s fine.

  • @mykneecuh
    @mykneecuh 6 місяців тому +19

Regarding female / male OBGYN topic:
I was against having a male OBGYN because I thought a female will know more or be more comfortable BUT once I was pregnant, I chose a male OBGYN and I have no regrets.
Past female OBGYN, I had bad experiences with. For some reason.. they talk to you like they’re lecturing and judging you. They’re rough because they think we can handle a Pap smear because they know the vagina… and many other reasons
My male OBGYN they’re more gentle because they know it’s a super sensitive area. They double check if you’re ok and make sure you’re comfortable and always go the extra mile because they know the female body is our temple.

    • @alexisbrubaker3200
      @alexisbrubaker3200 5 місяців тому +1

Came here to say this!! My male OBGYN is so empathetic and does go the extra mile to make sure I feel safe and comfortable in his office. I think the fact that they have never experienced something like period cramps or IUD insertion is something that can make them more empathetic to women. Whenever I have had a woman OBGYN I have felt judged and talked down to in a way that I did not like.
Also not for nothing, my grandfather is 91 and has been a practicing OBGYN (stopped the OB part over 20 years ago but still sees patients as a GYN) for 67 years and he still has so many patients that will only come to him and beg him not to retire because he is the best doctor they have ever had. (Also just for information, he is not my OBGYN. I think that would be crossing a weird line lol) I also don’t think that male OBGYN’s have a hard time separating their work from home. I do see how it would be weird for some people but I am team male OBGYN for life as of right now lol.

I was diagnosed was ADHD/ADD in 1st grade, and was medicated up until high school. Sense then I have tried to get back on meds, but instead my psychiatrist put me on a medication called Topamax which works in many ways- it helps with migraines, adhd, and the depression. I also did a genetic test called a genesight test which basically looks to see what medications your liver metabolizes faster. The faster it matabolizes the more likely it is to not work.

Hi !! I’ve shortly studied in biology and psychology and plainly put, for most medication that have effects related to hormones ( inhibitors or stimulants), when u start those, especially if you start young, your hormones receptors in you body, specifically in your nervous system, kinda get fucked up and get used to these new hormones level. So when you get off your body won’t go back to how it was before because those receptors had to adapt to an “overflow”, and they can’t go back to the “normal” quantity. A bit like if a filter that has been used to filter sand would now need to filter water, it won’t work as well. Anyway, that’s why some practitioners say “if you get on it you can’t get off” ! Hope this helped !

Omgomgomg I’m a microbiology doctorate student and I looooooove talking about the complexity of human physiology! Medications affect every person differently not only because of different neurology, like what Lauren mentions, but because of the varying diets/lifestyles which can lead to differing microbiota inhabiting the body 🥹

Okay! I am on a low dose stimulant and it helped so MUCH more than the high dose and on days I don’t HAVE to be overly focused and such I can skip it without the withdrawals. It is really common for doctors to say you can’t stop meds - it’s because it’s changed the chemistry and it can be dangerous. However, my sister never felt like stimulants work and she takes a non stimulant adhd medicine! I don’t know the name but apparently it’s more common for them to give non stimulants to women for idk why but, she is on a non stimulant medicine and it helps her more!

24:06 I think sometimes maybe during medical training in the hospital some men switch their specialty to OBGYN based on different cases they have been a part of, or based on how well they get along with the attending doctors and I feel like there are other things that go into choosing a specialty, though I absolutely understand as someone with female health issues that there is a type of empathy that can not be learned in a text book.

i always got dismissed by a female obgyn when i talked about period pain and cramp. she said it was normal and every girl has it. fast foward to my old man obgyn, it was a chocolate cyst in my ovary and 2 myoma in my uterus. yes there are nice female obgyn, but most of them are not. feel entitled bcs they think they have experience the stuff themselves at some point and think we’re just acting out.

My friend and I had a recent conversation about how alot of male doctors can be very dismissive towards woman and their health, we've both had different encounters where our doctors have dismissed our health concerns and automatically said it was just stress, our two appointments were completely different things. Mine was an request for an referral to get assessed for ADHD (spoiler alert I have adhd) and he basically said no its just stress cause of my age (I was 19, I'm now 27), my best friend went for an appointment after finding our she had a hormone imbalance due to low cortisol levels and went to find out what medication she needed, and what can be done to sort this out. Her male doctor just told her her symptoms are just due to stress...the stress is due to her low cortisol which was confirmed by a female doctor. She now requested a female doctor and is getting stuff sorted, I eventually got my referral due to my female doctor listening.
I forgot to mention me and my friend live in different countries so it's a world wide problem with male doctors being sexist.

Jeremy, you can absolutely go off of stimulants and I’ve had more doctors try to talk me out of taking adderall than the other way around. But you’re right, unmedicated adhd has a higher incidence of addiction and a shorter lifespan.
Anything that regulates dopamine might be worth exploring, since adhd brains don’t process dopamine correctly or sometimes at all lol

As an adult, I stopped taking it for a while and now only do during busy work periods but a lot of psychiatrists now I feel definitely discourage using stimulants more than you need to

    Regarding Jeremy’s poll:
My psychiatrist also doesn’t have a plan to take me off of my stimulant. I have basically been told that there is no scientific evidence that it is harmful long term when I asked if it was potentially harmful to take this endlessly until I die essentially. But he didn’t seem like there was any reason to stop the meds if they are helping and not causing any dramatic side effects.

My gynecologist is a man but I'm very confortable with it because he is old, and he is very shy, calm and gentle. He actually seems like he is the one uncomfortable with the situation every time. What is very funny to me though is that his secretary is actually his wife! And I find that to be so weird and funny at the same time 😅
Personnaly I prefer it to be a man because I think if they don't know what we feel they might be more gentle and listen better, whereas a woman who knows the pain etc but maybe has light pain might not be as understanding 🤷‍♀️

I’m halfway through and I have thoughts but I will only share some. Headlines: male gyno, tech shit.
Firstly I’ve heard that typically male gynos are more sympathetic than female gynos. I am referring to cis males and cis females here, I haven’t heard stats that explicitly refer to trans gynos of any gender. I also think you should try to get MamaDoctorJones on your podcast, she is fascinating (but she does live in New Zealand).
Secondly, Jeremy, can there be a tab in the discord to discuss tech shit because I want to know how you’re doing what you’re doing with blocking ads SO MUCH. I am so curious about what workarounds you are using, please share at least where I might start looking!

On the topic of why men choose to become OBGYNs, I don’t think it’s as weird as we may think. Like if you were really good at a that part of med school, why wouldn’t you choose it as your profession? Maybe it’s just the medical practice that makes the most sense to them so they feel like they will do their best work there. Plus they get to help deliver babies. Maybe they love the part about bringing life into the world. Idk, I understand why people think it’s weird and I personally have a female OB that I chose for the same reasons that Lauren said but I don’t think it’s that deep/creepy that men want to be OBs too.

Med students don’t choose their specialty until the end of their 3rd year in med school. So definitely not 19 when choosing that specialty, more like 25-27 range on average. Also, maybe they picked the specialty because they found it most interesting and not because it involves only vaginas or for any other reason…come on we’re stereotyping with saying they’re only interested because ‘vagina.’ I’ve heard the horror stories about female obgyn’s and I’ve experienced it as well, my male obgyn is wayyyy more empathetic towards me. I think he listens to my pain or my concerns with intent to help me, she more so compared it to hers and said I’m fine every time I had one sooooo that was traumatic. And yes, I had that same experience with like 3-4 different female obgyn’s until I met my now (male) obgyn.

I mean this in the NICEST way possible but that’s how we as viewers feel when UA-camrs (not you, specifically but others) have so so many ads in their vlogs, not fun!

    So many things.
    A) yes, Dr who takes care of Men is a urologist
    B) sometimes, male obgyns can be better because most of the guys that go into Obgyn are more sensitive than average male Drs. Also, some female obgyns are very "I've been through this your fine" which sucks.
    C) to explain the "ease of pickleball" I say - playing singles PB, the court is slightly smaller than half a tennis court (like playing doubles tennis). So doubles PB is even easier than that. Haha
    D) there are non stimulant medications for ADHD but depending on your insurance you have to prove stimulants don't work before they will cover non stimulants. But there are a lot of therapy treatments that help, but again, that's muscling your way through a problem that you could have assistance with medication (if that makes any sense).

Personally never had a single positive interaction with female ob. Went through 4 in 4 years and all of them were so rude and mean ans never listened. And now that i have a male obgyn I feel so much better and feel seen and heard. Also ob is in his 40s so kinda young but doesnt feel weird at all.

Is anyone else having issues with the Wild Til 9 Sweater orders? I ordered mine last December and haven't received it. I've contacted Fanjoy and every reply they tell me I will receive it by the next month and it's been 5 months now!

Jeremy, how can there not be a non-stimulant ADHD medication option? I am floored. Find it and tell everyone about it. How stupid is that! In this day and age? OMG!

Seconding the comments that most peoples consensus is if you're alone in the woods would you rather run into a random bear or a random man. And a lot of womens first thought was did he follow me, the bear lives here, the man doesn't. And if the man is a good man, obviously that would be safer, but the worst case scenario where it's a really bad man, the worst the bear can do is kill you, because it's hungry or threatened. So bottom line for a lot of women is death at the hands of a bear is better than at the hands of a potentially bad man. Then a lot of polarizing replies to defend why bear started getting popular, like, no one would accuse you of liking a bear attack, no one would ask if you were actually attacked, the bear won't tie you in a basement, etc. But I LOVE that here on WT9 we went with i think i could befriend the bear but i might need help bc directions? Couldn't be me, moving on 😂😂❤

Hell no ! To the male ob/gyn . I want someone who has most likely experienced painful cramps I want someone who bleeds monthly or at one point has bleed monthly . I need to feel like you don’t think I’m insane because I say I’m in immense pain .

I absolutely would never go to a male OBGYN. PCP, sure (although I'd rather not)...even a GI doctor, allergist, or other specialists, sure. But OBGYN? Absolutely not.
Editing my comment after reading some other comments. Very interesting that women have typically found male OBGYNs to be more empathetic! I think maybe I've just lucked out with my gynecologist because she's awesome. However, I started going to her at like 18...she was my first and only OBGYN so maybe if I were to need to search for another one (I'm dreading the day), I'd have trouble finding another woman I liked. I do think I'd still be more comfortable with a woman, but if I couldn't find a good one, I suppose I'd rather have a good guy doctor than a bad woman one just because she's a woman 🤷‍♀️
