Which colors did I use in this video? Want the candy cane digital stamp? Every video has a resource page! www.vanillaarts.com/blog/big-marker-small-space
I learn something valuable in every single one of your videos! I am 71, and have noticed that I just don't have the steady hands I had when I was younger. It is frustrating, and definitely takes some of the joy out of coloring. But, I persist and leave behind perfectionism, which is also difficult. 🙂
I really like your tough love here. It's a whole lot better to be mentally prepared for future adaptations you may have to make, than be caught by surprise and have no plan. That way you can still make the most of your art.
You know, that's an excellent way of putting it. I want to know about possible road blocks ahead and I don't understand setting oneself up to be unpleasantly surprised someday.
Wow your words hit me a certain way. I’m 42yrs old and I did a lot of marker art and colored pencil art in my 20s and I stopped in my 30s and started back up in my 40s, but the problem is that I bought all these expensive art supplies and I’ve just been looking at them because I spend most of the time trying to figure out what to draw. You made me realize if I don’t start just diving in and drawing something then time IS going to pass by and I don’t want to lose my chance. The years go by so fast nowadays andI been procrastinating way too much when it comes to art. Not anymore! Thanks for the “tough love” because it got me thinking!😂
I think I was made very aware of the artist's ticking time bomb by my mother in law. She sewed as a hobby but always said, "as soon as I retire, I'm learning to quilt" and she had big plans for taking classes from her heroes around the country. Shortly after retiring, they found an eye issue which left her color blind and she relied on me for years to double check her fabric selection. I didn't mind doing it but I found it sad because she was using my color voice, not her own. Please start. The only thing you'll regret is not re-starting sooner.
Before I found this video, I wasted an hour sifting through worthless UA-cam 'tutorials' that simply traced outlines and said, "There, now you know how to draw!" I learned more in the first 10 minutes of your video than in all the others combined! Thank you for truly educating us on using these tools effectively.
I am so glad I found you. So far, I've watched two of your videos and you've answered SO many of the questions I've had about why my coloring is the way it is. Thank you so much!
Even after taking many of your classes/projects, I definitely had some AHA moments watching this video, like I now realize that I try to start in the corner so I don't flick outside the line. Thank you for your videos, theres Always something to be learned!
I learned a while ago that markers are not for me. There are lots of other supplies that I love. I share art on a different channel. But I still like watching you use markers.
I have nerve damage in both hands from severe carpal tunnel. I, as I’ve gotten older, have visual issues. It’s nice to hear you encourage people to go larger with the images. I frequently wish that stamps came in multiple sizes for those of us that can’t do tiny anymore.because, I’m know I’m not the only one having trouble with this. Great video and image! Do you think that doing the candy canes to look like chocolate and vanilla would work for Valentine’s Day? Hmmmm
I totally agree about the stamps. When I taught locally, the shop made their money off the sale of supplies including the stamp set. I can't tell you the number of hours I spent scouring stamp catalogs, only to find 4-5 stamps big enough to use. And that was just the first weed-through because then, of the large-enoughs, I had to eliminate anything ugly, cartoonish, or stuff I didn't have any desire to teach. It was soooooo difficult! For Valentine's Day: I don't think chocolate will come off as believable but look up "old fashioned stick candy" or Gillam Candy Sticks. In college, I worked at a vintage themed ice cream parlor and we had a whole wall of candy sticks in every imaginable flavor and color. You'll definitely find something in a better color scheme than brown and white, LOL.
I wish some watercolor folks out there would discuss fine points (topics) not marker points, as you did in this very informative lesson. Really good info here.
I think watercolor is going through a Splash & Dash phase right now. These things aways swing and I expect to see more technical voices rise as people get frustrated (and bored) with the sameness of laissez-faire techniques.
@ I agree with you. Easy to watch and try to replicate and get discouraged. Viewers are not thinking about the advance preparation and thought, “just sit down and play”! I want results and learning from my time. I’m think’in you did too. I really enjoy you Amy. And your brand of humor!
@ I don’t even know what to do anymore about glasses because one eye needs to be close to see details and the other needs to be far away to see details. I’m thinking coloring with one eye is my best bet 🤷🏼♀️🤣🤣🤣
I guess I am not surprised that people have heard of speed and pressure. That is something I mostly figured out on my own, but it really isn't talked about much. That is one thing I like about the Ohuhu brand is they have the Honolulu set B. Those have a brush on one side and a bullet on the other instead of the chisel. I personally rarely ever need the chisel tip when I have a brush tip, unless I want to cover a super large area and don't want to damage my brush nib. That is really the only time I have ever used them. So having the bullet and brush combo is MUCH nicer for those times when you need tiny spaces and not a lot of ink. Ohuhu nibs with the current brush nibs, you can flip the nib. It seems they are are going to be coming out with rubber nibs next year though.
Meh. I don't mean this unkindly towards you personally, but until Ohuhu fixes their ink issues, they're not a serious art supply. As a goofin'-around product, they're fine but otherwise? Nope, nope, nope.
I have printers in the miscellaneous section here: www.vanillaarts.com/recommended-products I use the Canon for almost every project shown on this channel because it prints larger than 8.5 wide and also because it handles thick paper like a dream. BUT I don't recommend it for hobbyists because it's gigantic and very much overkill for the average user.

Yep. Luckily, I still have my hands but I can feel my eyes changing. I like your attitude, less perfectionism is likely healthier for us all anyway.

@@AmyShulke It's probably a side benefit of no longer being young and immortal! :-D (I'm not either, by the way)

Yoooo so wierd. Im 42. With the same name. 😂
Bless your editor - He does a wonderful job. I love watching your informative and entertaining videos 💙💜
Amy, you're not getting older, you're getting better. At least that's what I tell myself!
LOL. Just not better at reading labels on medicine bottles.

Glad I could help! I started teaching because I was frustrated with the available info, so I totally get ya :)

I'm so glad! Let me know if there's a topic you'd like to see covered. I can't make promises but I do keep a list.
I love your videos! You are so informative and funny. I love your sarcasm, it resonates with me 😂
Awesome. When someone doesn't get our kind of humor, they really, really don't get it. I'm happy to have not made you angry (today).
Brilliant video Amy! 🫶🇦🇺
Thank you!

I'm so glad! I count myself lucky to have you in so many classes. I'm thrilled to have helped but also pleased that I can keep surprising you!
I just came across your videos. Your voice is so soothing and you give tremendous tips. Oh and EDITOR you are doing a fantastic job. 😊
Thank you, from both of us!

Thank you! The concepts translate, plus I totally understand. I watch a lot of videos in mediums I'll never use. It's fun!

Get your glasses on. Lotta little corners in it, LOL.

@@lap83199 I would pay to watch this. I think I can even sell tickets.

Calorie Free Lasagna ftw 🤣
Now I'm thinking Italian for dinner... (sigh)
Excellent info and video! Thank you! New subscriber
Thanks for the sub and for the feedback! So glad. you found me!
Hi Amy,
Which printer are you currently using and which ones do you recommend?
I have printers in the miscellaneous section here: www.vanillaarts.com/recommended-products
I use the Canon for almost every project shown on this channel because it prints larger than 8.5 wide and also because it handles thick paper like a dream. BUT I don't recommend it for hobbyists because it's gigantic and very much overkill for the average user.
What a funny guy 😂
I keep telling him to be on camera.
