How Did They Let The Indianapolis Colts Get Away With This.. | NFL Draft News (Anthony Richardson)

- Well, if anyone made the biggest splash of the 2023 NFL Draft, it feels like it was new head coach Shane Steichen and the Indianapolis Colts with selecting Florida QB Anthony Richardson with the 4th overall pick. And while Anthony Richardson has clearly stuck out as one of the craziest QB prospects we’ve ever seen with what he did in college, at the combine, his pro day, etc, I don’t think many people realize how crazy the situation he is being put in could benefit him.
With Anthony Richardson thriving in the style of offense he used while at Florida, the Indianapolis Colts are immediately able to set up him in the same fashion with HC Shane Steichen’s offense used with the Philadelphia Eagles & Jalen Hurts. And with having viable WRs already like Michael Pittman Jr & Alec Pierce, while also drafting WR Josh Downs out of UNC, the run game of Jonathan Taylor, Zack Moss, & Deon Jackson has the Colts offense looking to take on a whole new identity.
Nonetheless, as see what Jim Irsay, Shane Steichen & company continue to do throughout the remainder of the 2023 NFL Draft, they’ve seemed to give Indy a completely new path to success, which is one Colts fans are definitely not used to.

Predict the Colts final record in the 2023 season 👇
5-11-1
7-10, afc south champs.
@@toddsauerwein4413 nah jags are afc south champs this season
9-8 2nd in AFC South
@@toddsauerwein4413 I think 7-10 but not afc south champs.
something that gives me so much hope for ar15 is that his first 6 starts he had 5tds/7ints vs 2 ranked opponents but his last 6 starts he had 12 tds/2ints vs 4 ranked opponents. hes inexperienced and showing massive improvement after 1 season. colts may very well have a top 10 qb in a couple years
He’s wearing #5
Dang. Did not know that
Colts have a top 10 QB as of Thursday. He'll have a rough start but as you said the kid just soaks up knowledge and will be a beast come week 6 or 7
Edit: If he stays healthy.
Thanks for that info . It makes this pick make more sense . We know his ceiling is limitless , and he will bring some excitement to this team .
@@jasonw342 that's a stretch. The amount of coaching and information this dude has to absorb is beyond what we can comprehend. I think he'll come around and we have the perfect head coach to do it but half way through his rookie season is overly optimistic. We'll see tho
Anthony Richardson is in the best situation he could have hoped for. He's going to thrive in Indy and bring energy and swagger that we haven't had since Luck retired.
They need day one starter and he ain't that. Could have went to MANY better places. Baltimore jumps off the page
@@burtknighten4438 playing is the best way to develop. We are not ready yet anyways we have a young defense that needs developing
@@burtknighten4438 So he would’ve gone to Baltimore after Lamar just resigned with the Ravens as one of the highest paid QBs in history? Yeah, no. The colts is honestly the best situation he could’ve asked for. A team with young offensive weapons to build around, a clear path for him to become the starter within a relatively short amount of time, and a coach who mentored a QB in an offense that is eerily similar to the same offense AR15 had in college. Richardson is the best position right now. He just has to make it work.
@@devenbereznoff244 I agree with you but honestly I would rather see him in Seattle young great receivers great coach great running backs and overall just a great team for a young an to build Around sit behind geno smith for a year and learn and then be the starter next year
That we haven't had**
As a Colts fan, I'm excited about this. That said, fellow Colts fans need to be patient and buy into the fact that this is going to be a growth process for quite a while. Josh Allen made a jump from year two to year three. We can't get too down on Anthony Richardson until at least after year three. We were spoiled with how ready Andrew Luck was for the NFL.
Ceiling: Josh Allen with Lamar Jackson/Michael Vick speed. Floor: JaMarcus Russell with Lamar Jackson/Michael Vick speed.
As a Colts fan & Florida Gator fan I support this 💯 percent
💯
Josh Allen didn’t make a jump , they just surrounded him with pass catchers and boom he looks great
I don’t think his floor is JaMarrcus Russell because Russell had clear attitude issues that the Raiders ignored, haven’t heard anything remotely close for Richardson. I think his floor is a Mariota type of player.
@@117Awesome That's a good point. Attitude makes a huge difference. I remember telling my parents after the Colts' playoff loss in Manning's second season that everyone should be like Peyton Manning after listening to his post-game press conference. Manning was talking about focusing on getting better, focusing on what you control, not getting carried away by disappointment. People forget how bad the first half of Manning's rookie season was. He was not plug-and-play like Luck was. I just hope the Colts fanbase is positive and supportive of our guy Anthony Richardson for the next few years regardless of how things look in the moment.
I'm an Eagles fan, and very excited to watch Richardson. Steichen absolutely knows the weapon he has at QB with Richardson, he'll design the offense to his strengths and tailor it to Richardson as he develops. Going to be awesome to watch.
Hurts bout to take a step back this year😂
As a Gator Mom and a huge fan of Anthony, hope he is given time to develop into the phenomenal QB I know he can be!!
Just remember, he only got to play 13 games and waited patiently behind an ineffective UF qb for an entire season.
If Colts fans are patient, and his coaches nurture him and work in developing him, y’all will be in he catbird seat with a phenomenal qb and a hardworking young man- GO GATORS 🐊🐊🐊
As a colts fan I completely agree. Let minshew ride out at least 5 starts and start slowly putting him in for read options to start and short yardage situations
Anthony needs reps. Ballard already said he needs reps, and they know it will take time and will be ugly early. They’re not drafting him at #4 to get rid of him in a few years. He’s a project, but he will be completed. I trust Steichen and the rest of the staff to finish the job.
They are going to rebuild this team custom for him just like they did Payton he's awesome he will make history
@@mikedorris1789 can’t wait to see that happen; he is so deserving! A great young man with a great family supporting him 🐊🐊🐊
Being from Indiana this makes me excited! Plus I can buy a jersey and not worry about him being traded!
😂 I wouldn't count on it. This is the biggest gamble in the first round
It all depends. The Cardinals traded Josh Rosen to the Dolphins one year after drafting him with the tenth pick.
Y’all drafted a TE as a QB best of luck.
Also, lot of quarterbacks have been traded or released by teams that drafted them. This includes Rosen, Goff, Wentz, Trubisky, Winston, Mayfield, Watson, Winston, and Mariotta.
@@Triqkshot Cam Newton was a TE and won MVP and went to a Super Bowl
Dang.. i need my summer but my lord i cant wait for September!!
Like the video, agree with everything you said. Coaches on get that kind of gift once. I cried like Anthony did when I heard his name for the Colts, sincerely john Steichen, Shane’s father!
Us Colts are so excited to have your son in Indy! Bright thins ahead!
It'll be great to root them both on!!!
There is one person that might make all of the difference with this. That is Reggie Wayne, the WR Coach for Indy. He is someone that is very well respected and and worked with Manning for years and Luck and can really help teach AR how to be a pro. He has also shown he can be a mentor with guys that want it like TY did. If nothing else this will be fun to watch, at least until it is not :).
And this is the first year he was able to have true input on a rookie receiver. Ballard said he was all over downs and wanted him here since the combine
Colts fan here and I LOVE this pick when you look at colts situation rn. New coach who knows exactly what to do with an athletic QB, a relatively young team, and a freak of a QB this COULD be huge for the colts. I agree with everyone there’s alot of ground work to do for AR but I’m confident in the coaching staff and he’s said alot of the right things that make me feel comfortable with waiting on his development. My gut feels really good about this it just may take time.
He's got good TE's, the best RB in the league, Good WR's, a possibly great slot and a revamped line.
In a year or 2, this offense will be top 5.
Jonathan Taylor isn’t even top 5.
Henry Cmc Chubb jacobs Barkley are all better.
Who even is the te, mo alie cox?
Michael Pittman is decent at best, and the line played horrible last year.
YESSSS!!!!! SPOT ON!!!! Go Colts!!!
Indy has a good team. I’m excited for him and rooting for him a ton. He may be huge, like big time RG3 pre ACL. Watching this play out and being a McAfee fan I think I’ll be watching a lot of colts games this year. Good luck dude.
yep, every year for the last 5 or so years I keep hearing how great Indy is.
Then I see they won 4 games last season... Must have been Carson's fault. Except he wasn't there.
Let's be real. You all are the new Lions.
@@Fektthis Carson? You mean Ryan? Carson had them pretty much to the playoffs at 9-8. Rivers had I think a 12-4 the year before. Last year was a joke but it wasn’t Carson.
@@Fektthisuh, let's face it dude the Lions are still the modern day version of the Lions.. nobody can top them in their line of work, sorry not sorry 😅
@@shaundiltz5821 I meant Carson. Because, as you said, Carson wasn't god awful while he was there. They put it all on him though as if everything that went wrong was his fault. The Colts just aren't as good as advertised.
@@Fektthis gotcha. I thought he was good and they just missed a couple close games to get in the mix. I guess I just watched the games and didn’t watch the media. Didn’t know we were blaming him for everything. That season we very close. I still think they have a good team. Maybe for another couple years though. My opinion
This overall young offense has me so excited for Indys future. Like, the next decade "could" be set. Lets gooooo!
Dont forget steichen was the offensive coordinator of the chargers during herbert's rookie year. Herbert was seen as raw coming out in 2020, but under steichen he became the rookie of the year and top qb.
Herbert: 1,000 more passing yards, 15% more completions, 6th best Heisman odds.... vs... Richardson: absoluet garbo in college.
He's a freak! I'm excited as a colts fan. I also like the idea that he and Steichen are starting their colts careers together. AR won't have to learn a new system each season. Just please can we protect this guy?
As a Texan fan I am honestly terrified

@Richard Charles RG3 and Wilson had good numbers and won games coming out of college.
As a Colts fan,
Give it 2-3 years. I'm pumped for this after the Carson Wentz and Matt Ryan experiences. (Rivers was solid his one year with us, but I think our office drove him to retirement. He was pissed at Reich after that playoff game)
@Richard Charles 2-3 years is not nonsense for development. I didn't say on the bench either.
2-3years is a good sample size to see what a player is capable of. Josh Allen was horrendous his first year, okay his second year, and an absolute stud since his third year

For the first in a while I’m excited about the quarterback situation at Indianapolis. Great time to be a Colts fan.
It’s AR5 now but anywho as a colts fan I couldn’t be more excited for a massive change like this. Him and JT are going to be a dangerous duo and it’s going to massively let pressure off of our o line
Yes. I’m actually glad he changed his number. From reading about his background and childhood with being colored, improvised, filled with tragedy and untimely losses and his overall humility and apparent compassion; I was wondering if his number change may have been been due to wanting to disassociate himself from the implications of having a nickname of “AR15”. If so, then I absolutely applaud his decision.
Impoverished, not improvised. Damn autocorrect.

Best video I’ve seen break down the AR addition to Colts hands down
Im a gator and I just enjoyed watching all of my favorite throws from this season compiled into a nicely edited video. I’ve also recently become a colts fan.
The local guys leaned Richardson most of the way, but did say they knew we liked Levis too. National folks didn't seem to have any clue we liked AR though. Lol
I'm pumped though man. He was my QB1 this draft - couldn't be more excited. So many people think he's this super raw guy to like Willis, but I think that's just folks who haven't watched the film.
Perfect situation for this young man!
Go Colts!
I am excited to watch Anthony develop into a superstar QB. He is only 20 yrs old and Indy can expect many years of stability at QB, like they had with Peyton Manning! I am ready to experience the glory years again. Go COLTS!
Don't compare him to Peyton please it's not fair. Peyton's a top 3 all time QB.
@@andrewmann4067 He is just excited that the colts finally have a QB. Comparing him to manning is far fetched but hopefully he will be a beast after he develops
You need to watch a full game of him playing 😂 he is terrible. Peyton manning? More like jamarcus Russell
Literally anyone that is a Colts fan knew it would be AR, everyone on the outside was just talking about Levis for whatever reason
Also Indy has a good te room too. Nothing flashy but good enough to get that next first down when you need it
Levi’s girl was like damn got my ass with a back up Qb lmao. She wanted/thought she had her a Mahomes
Richardson and Taylor in the backfield with Pittman Jr. at WR and Steichen as HC? 🔥
As a colts fan I’m sure we can all agree we haven’t been this excited about a quarterback since Luck. Anthony Richardson will be a super star.
I'm a die hard colts fan and I'm NOT EXCITED at all he will be a bust and out of league in 4yrs
As long as colt fans are patient Anthony Richardson should be a stud in the nfl . He only played one season as Floridas qb on a transition team lacking a lot of talent and still was the talk most weeks of the season doing insane things with literally no experience in the best conference in cfb .
The best thing to do for a QB that has some accuracy problems is get a WR that catches everything that touches his fingers. Josh downs with be pivotal in Richardsons potential
Same with Pittman he has magnets for hands
AR's release looks good. He can throw it deep and has great footwork. And he is humble and exhibits high class character. If he makes good decisions and is willing to throw the ball out of bounds instead of taking sacks, he can be one of the greats.
Drafting AR15 feels like drafting Andrew luck all over again tbh
Let's just say I haven't been this excited over a draftee since the 2011-2012 season 😮😊 AR is gonna be the next man to bring a chip back to INDY! Go BIG blue! 💙
I'm excited for this year Anthony is a beast!
Hoping for the best
For the people saying he can't improve on his accuracy. I would advise you guys to go look at Andrew Luck's first year at Stanford. Which was 12 starts. He eventually become Andrew Luck, as we all know. If the NFL can see the potential why should he stay in college for two more seasons. When we are always told the best coaches are in the NFL.
Josh Allen and Jalen Hurts too.
11-7 Colts second in Division. Should be exciting with New coach! Go Colts!
Well they only play 17 games, I say 10-7
Also it wasn’t just Shane who molded Hurts into what he became last year but QB coach Brian Johnson played a huge role. Brian Johnson also coached at Florida under Dan Mullen when Kyle Trask exploded out of nowhere to Heisman numbers. Johnson played just as much of a role I’d say.
Going from Saturday/Ryan to steichen/Richardson will be one the best glow ups we’ve seen in years
Super excited for Richardson and my colts the future is bright
I love him already go Colt's we ready
In the words of Coach Prime: WE COMIN!
Hes gonna put the work in..and you best believe someday hes gonna be elite like youve never seen.
His ceiling is highest by far in this class
good analysis
Amazing assessment of the opportunity that AR15 is about to have in Indy with coach Steichen, if people think that this Colts team is going to be the same Manila offense as in years past they're in for a rude awakening. As a life long colts fan I can honestly say I am extremely excited for whats to come. Go Colts!
Jim Irsay for Owner of the Year! He made all those moves so we could lose enough games to get a dream come true draft. I am so excited for this season to start!
It's a bit early to announce the draft as a dream come true. Probably should wait a few years before giving out that award. Furthermore he screwed up firing Reich. That led to the colts winning a game which had Reich been there he would have insured that that wouldn't have happened thus we could be picking at 1 or 2. Think about that. Texans would have had to give us what they gave to the cardinals or the panthers give us what they gave the bears for us to end up with Richardson anyway.
@@bradsanders407 cry
@@bradsanders407 go be a Titians fan 🤣
just watched his combine deep balls and I just couldn’t not smile
He is very intelligent, very hard-working, and extremely high character. I watched every Gator game twice. Very proud of him. We love him here in Gainesville. He is the #1 QB in the draft; time will show this.
People keep forgetting Steichen was the OC with the Chargers during Herbert’s rookie year. He’s an outlier QB obviously but it means Steichen got a juiced up running version of Herbert. If AR is able to develop as a passer similar to Hurts he’s gonna be the goat.
As a colts fan, Anthony Richardson was the only pick I would've accepted. Him in Shane Steichans offense will be fun and on top of that he has the best guard in football in Quenton Nelson paving the way for him and Jonathan Taylor being a monster in the run game
They won the draft. This is Cam Version 2. He will be the next GOAT Mobile QB!!! I wish us Panthers drafted him. Congrats to the Colts
dumbest shit ive read all day
So there’s a ton of hype and expectation around this kid. I believe he could be a great QB. I just hope people are patient with him. Let him learn and develop. As a Colts fan I want to win now, but it’s unrealistic to expect Richardson to come in and play like an MVP the first game out of the gate.
It may take a few years for him to develop, Colts fans are going to have to be patient with him. He dose have a lot of potential.
Hopefully he develops into ah beast cause I've seen a lot of players with great talent be bust it's gone take more than being fast and having a strong arm
Irsay revealed Richardson was their guy and would have taken him if they picked first. Also, it’s possible Steichen was brought in for the purpose of developing Richardson. I can’t believe people thought we’d select Levis.
I am drinking the Blue Kool Aid because of Steichen. He makes them much better. Steichen will scheme to Richardson's strengths.
Richardson & Taylor will be ELECTRIC. They need to go find the best right guard possible for their O-line.
Indy is a great situation. JT and AR5 will make a great backfield. It seems the LT is shored up and improving. Pierce going into a second year could take a step forward. Plus Indy is pretty low pressure. The fans will give him time to develop. Wins aren't the most important thing in '23, getting the kid experience and development is.
he, by far, has the highest ceiling in this QB class... he also has the lowest floor. im hoping the gamble pays off. im a gator fan and this kid is a good person. he does everything for his little brother. he works hard. hes smart. colts may have found the next franchise legend. i cant freaking wait for the season to start. and im not even a colts fan.
I'm a Colts Fan, but I'm not sold on Richardson. He is a Boom or Bust player. I hope the Colts Staff can coach him up. One season of 13 games as a starter in College doesn't bode well.
Let's go COLTS! We know what we got, great draft.
AR15 is probably the best nickname in all of sports 😂
Richardson wants to distance himself from the AR15 nickname. Respect that.
I will preface this by saying that I think the Colts offensive line comes back healthy and with improvements in last year's rookie Tackle Raimann and this year's selection Freeland wherever they fit in this year. Secondly, the combination of having Pittman, Pierce and Downs are very complementary pieces. However the Tight End group plays out, some combination of Cox, Woods, Granson, Ogletree and Mallory hopefully produce additional ways to stretch defenses in addition to Richardson's abilities and the bounce back of Jonathan Taylor off an injury season. There is a whole lot of things for a defense to concern themselves with when trying to defend the threats that will be on the field. Or at least extend some drives to allow for the defense to get adequate rest to stay fresher for 4 quarters.
As far as the defense goes, the hopeful healthy return of Shaq Leonard to the LB group, with I assume Speed and Franklin will hopefully bring the ability to turn offenses over that was sorely lacking last year. The loss of Gilbert at corner is likely going to be difficult to replace, especially with a quartet of rookies. Can Kenny Moore return to pro bowl form after a disappointing season last year and will anyone of the rookies (Brents, Rush or Jones) out play Rodgers to earn starting spots and possibly use their combination of size and speed to allow a pass rush to disrupt opponents passing plays? If they can hold down the edge receivers adequately enough to allow Moore to matchup with slot receivers next year will be huge. The defensive line is a clear strength for the Colts. Buckner, Glover, Paye, Lewis Adebaywore and Odeyingbo can get pressure on the QB and prevent opponents' offensive line from getting to the second level in the running game allowing the linebackers and safeties to fly to the ball will be another key. Then there is the safety group. Still a very young and talented group with serious speed to cover a lot of field. Blackmon, Cross, Thomas and Scott have elite athletic traits but will they be ready to step up.
With all that said, I feel like the Colts even with a not developed Richardson can 11-6, win the division and get to the second weekend of the playoffs. A lot of that depends on Richardson being healthy because his presence in a Steichen offense along with Taylor in the backfield will make sending extra pass rushers difficult as well as forcing defenses to matchup one on one and keep at least one if not two players spying to stop the running threats.
I will also say that I have all post season been someone who certainly was against trading up for one of the top 2 QB's in the draft, and would have been more than happy to not take a 1st round QB at all, or even trade down and plug other holes relying on Minshew to tread water for a year and hope that one of the picks they get in a trade to be early enough to get what I think is a better QB class next year. So I have pretty much done a 180, since Richardson selection.
As a Colts fan…..I think I can safely say Colts fans are prepared for a 3-14 season. Not a shot on AR there. Just saying we fully understand this might take some time. Manning went 3-13 his rookie season. The ceiling is so high for AR and that alone will get us through what could be a bumpy rookie year
What about 2-14 colts going 11-5 with luck. Not saying he’s Luck, but they’ll get 8-9 wins
You obviously don't realize how good of a coach the Colts have in Steichen and the fact they play 1 of the easiest schedules thus year. I say 10-7...
@@TheEliteMaster0or 10 because of the coaching and very easy schedule!
Now make one about Houston, you know you want too 👀😏
It's crazy that Richardson wasn't good in college but people think he can play in the pros lol
I love the pick and fit for both sides. I just pray they don't force him to start. Best case is mid-season. That Philly style scheme would be great for him to succeed. But he needs a few weeks of film amd watching from the sideline.
Nah, start him day 1. He’ll learn a lot more on the field than carrying a clipboard.
I think it’s best to slowly implement him more and more every game. Throw in a read option or short yardage and go from there
I disagree with a full sit him season. Even mid-season to get reps sounds a bit too late, I personally prefer if they threw him in from the get go. Maybe let Minshew start but give Richardson 20-30% of the snaps so he can gain expierence in a live situation before he fully takes over at mid-season/bye week
I am incredibly excited about this. I just hope they get the other tools in place also. Good receivers and a decent line. Lord, we gotta have a decent line. A halfway decent defense to impede the other offense some while we outscore them and win...yeah. AR could be great but it's a TEAM sport in the end.
We're looking at someone who could either be the most dominant QB to ever live or the biggest bust. Super excited to see which direction he leans towards this coming season!
Ain’t nobody messing with Lamar Jackson!!!!!!!
Hey ya'll - it's gonna be AR5 from now on. He's gonna wear #5.
It's almost like they never heard of Cam Newton lol
The question no one is asking is, with all this ability why was he sitting in 2020 and 2021? I didn't watch Florida Gator football during that time, did anyone else?
He was 18 and 19 years old. He’s currently 20. Levis is 24 for example. He’s the youngest of the QB prospects this year
@@matttaylor2812 Khalil Tate was the regular starter for Arizona at 18, even made a start against USC at 17! who was ahead of Richardson at Florida?
I actually have no clue why people thought the colts were gonna draft Levis. Immediately after the combine I was fixed on Richardson.
I watch Bears and Colts games. Watching Fields was tons of fun, though the Bears didn't win much. So at least it might be more fun at Lucas this year, even if the results don't show up as W's this year.
He’s my favorite fantasy qb in this draft
AR AND JT backfield is scary
I know people love to talk about his athletic ability but he rarely ran and when he did 90% of the time it was to buy time to throw the ball. He was making great strides as a pocket passer. If he continue to work hard he will be a great player
This is what i love about him, passer first

I’m not a huge colts fan, I haven’t even watched the league outside of media coverage for the past few years cause my saints have been mid tier garbage, but this kid gives me like major josh Allen cam newton sorta vibes and I hope he plows through his rookie slump and has a great career ahead of him, literally I haven’t been this excited about a bad team drafting since the one year the saints somehow got Michael Thomas Alvin kamara in the same draft.
The only prediction I can make with any confidence is that season ticket sales will increase.
Congratulations Anthony Richardson❤ so proud of you Go Gators 🐊
I thank god he coming to us go colts
I honestly think his ceiling is a mix of Josh Allen's arm, Cam Newton's size, joe burrows ability to read defenses, with Lamar Jackson's speed and agility! Which if he is even half of that he will be a pro bowler! But I think he could be an absolute monster the likes of which no one has ever seen on the football field "potentially"
He's the fastest qb ever since Michael Vick
Anthony Richardson said hes not a fan of being called AR15, and hes going to be #5
It's AR5 guys. He's not wearing 15
If I was picking for my running, jumping throwing against air in shorts team, he would most definitely be my guy. That is the tape that looks good - the combine tape. Since the colts are a football team, seems football game tape would have been weighted more. That tape did not look quite so great. If I were a fan of another AFC south team, I would be pleased the colts took this guy.
As a Colts fan I'm cautiously very optimistic. Anything is possible. He could end up even better than Jalen Hurts or Josh Allen. Or he could be out of football as a bust in a couple years. No way to tell. But there is a lot to indicate that things will end up in a positive direction.
