I started cycling again after about 50 years. My last bike had three gears, my new one has 7 + three on left . i needed this type of video to get my head around the complexity of riding a bike, which people say , you can never forget, I suggest you really can forget, but you can get catch up with videos like this.

Got a bike yesterday, and hadn't previously ridden one in over 20 years. Went out for a quick journey today, and quickly realised i didn't really understand my 21 gear beast. This video helped massively. At least i now know what im doing when i go on it again tomorrow, cheers.

Very nice video, simple, direct and understandable-not too technical and still enough information. I, too, have been watching a lot of videos trying to get a grasp of what I even want to ask-and many of the videos are far too long, slow-paced and/or technical, or else explaining such simple things that they are (IMHO) already obvious. I hired a bike on holidays recently and was pedalling BACKWARDS to change gears cos someone who obviously knew not much at all told me! Oops! I had only ridden single speed bikes as a kid a long time ago so was a novice on a geared bike. Your tutorial helped so much, thanks once again.

I've often wondered about this front gear set. It is for special conditions.... set in the center for flat ground, and shifted to the larger gear for 30mph+ traveling. Set on the smaller front gear for greater climbing power.
I am total newbie to gears and have watched loads of videos, but this one is the one that was the most easy to understand and follow. Thinking of it in terms of gears and ranges really keeps it easy. Thanks for making this.

This is better explained than other videos I have seen. Shimano gears is what I operate on. derailer 1-3 with a 7 speed mountain bike.

I like speed and getting a workout. I haven't even put my left sided shifter in 3. Next time I'm moving at a good pace in a higher gear I'm going to slap it into 3 and try it out. Thank you for the tips!

Thanks for the vid. I was an 80's kid with huffy bikes and an occasional ten speed, so I had to get up to snuff with these 21 gear bikes. Front gear was on 1, I will make sure to put it on 2. Thanks again.

Range 1 uses gears 1 and 2. Range 2 can use any gear. Range 3 uses gears 3-7.

So gears 5 -7 make it harder to pedal and thus go faster. Sorry if this is a dumb question. Just got a 21 speed bike and trying to understand
