    The Origianal Cane Corso is a dog with a rich history and somewhat dim future. Jimmy Monugian Jr is not one who believes that dark prognosis. Jimmy and his mentor Mike Sottile Jr. are fighting to bring the true history and true genetics of a legendary dog, the Italian Mastiff.
    Italian Mastiff, Neapolitan Mastiff, Cane Corso, and Cane De Presa are names given to the farm dogs of Italy. These large mastiff dogs trace their history back to ancient Rome. These dogs were an all around utility dog in Italy. They were used as farm dogs, hunting dogs, and guard dogs. Before the kennel clubs this breed went by various names, Cane Corso, Cane De Presa, and Neapolitan Mastiff.

    I had a Cane Corso for almost 9 years and I gotta tell ya he was the most loving dog I think I’ve ever had. He looked a lot like the ones you have. He grew to be 165 pounds. Sadly he died from dilated cardiomyopathy last week and it was so heartbreaking

    My mate has an original Cane Corso from Italy (Florence). He met a breeder on internet and went to the place. After few months of researching he decided to do. He lives alone and it's really more like a neopolitan. Much more broader, heavier, muscular and still very fast. His name is Julius Cesar, weighs 58 kg, height, 70 cm. He is the highest of the nest, but not the heaviest. For my experience, if he comes to my house. Very very intelligent, doesn't bark much, is very soft to children and kind to adults. You can let him loose in the city or forest and knows what to do, without any prof training. My mate trains himself and knows the power of the dog. Instead of guard training, he started as young as possible socializing all kind of people and walk of the leash. He just copied in his mind that you could use the environment as a tool instead of making problems of infrastructure and all other human things. By 20 weeks completely from the leash and he doesn't care if he is on the leash.
    He gives him raw food and bones in the weekend, and most of the time dry food bio. From Monday till Friday. He eats max 2 times a day and lays down for a couple of hours. The other thing is, these dogs knows how to defend and attack. It's an ancient breed that knows the differences between bad and good, if the owner is stable. This is not a dog for beginners and whatever you want, always research and be honest to yourself before getting huge problems. In the end the dog always loose and we as people must prevent it, instead of shooting it down.
    For breeding in the whole world is just simple. To many people breed and has no or maybe a tiny knowledge. This problem can only be solved if there comes a worldwide standard where everybody stands behind. I don't say that people may not breed, but I rather see original dogs with a good bloodline from healthy breeders with the knowledge.
    After this dog, he will take a new Cane Corso and honestly I felled in love with this breed. Absolutely good in house and never problems with any kind of thing.
    Peace to all dog lovers and people who respect nature

    Totally agree when he says he sees a boxer in the new "American" cane corso. It's a Shame the breed was down sized and is a lot lighter now. Old type Cane corso/ working neo are the best.

      But at the same time the old Boxer looks like a Corso and old Corso used to be called The Boxing Dog. But there is definitely some fuckery going on with the Breed especially when talking show quality and North American standard.

    • @tomlib6794
      @tomlib6794 2 роки тому +10

      The breed wasn't downsized... it was upsized. The European cane corsos are lighter leaner faster and agile at around 135 which is still huge. But when they were imported here and bred which larger dogs, they became heavier bulkier slower. The original Italian mastiff is a perfect blend of size agility speed and power

    • @descendancedenoefilsdadam1028

      @@tomlib6794 it depends with the two trends the light versions are mixed with the boxer they have smaller crushed faces with a weird look in their eyes, they don't look as a Cane Corso at all, their body is skinny half Stéphanie between a Boxer and a Corso so quite lighter and quite underpowered in the bite section they are the worst, the second trend is to mix it with the Neopolitan Mastiff "Matin Napolitain " in french in this case you are adding weight to it and it becomes a fairly heavier dog, with more skin and more antique Italian style Mastiff look in it, but it will lack endurance, and raw power explosiveness. The secret with the true Cane Corso is that he can eat the same amount of food as far more heavier dogs but being lighter because he's a super active dog he got a speedy metabolism and his psyche is linked to it. When he can't burn those calories he become destructive.

      @@descendancedenoefilsdadam1028 mine didn't look like a boxer at all. If anything he had a longer snout. Eyes didn't look like a boxer either. Also didn't have all the folds of a neopolitan. He had a large bear like head, huge jaws, large upper body, and I never overfed him. He stayed lean throughout his life, that's probably why he lived so long. I have pictures of him but I can't post them here

    Thank you brother for telling the truth about the breed, there were so many in Brooklyn growing up. But they faded away with the old Italian guys, my wife’s family in Naples on their farm use to give puppies away. My vet wanted $400 for a cherry eye on mine, I told him growing up I seen many done with a scissor for free. Anyway thank you so much for telling the true history on the Italian mastiff. Once a breed gets popular is the destruction of what they were.It was awesome to watch this, thank you for keeping the truth & the breed alive. Me & my Italian mastiff thank you.

    Real traditional Corso's are unmatched. Please do extensive research on the breed before buying one and make sure you do yourself the service of getting a Corso from traditional lines. The calm, relaxed, and steady confidence is what makes this breed so special. That being said a traditional Corso is going to be a lot more protective then a Corso that has had recent Boxer mixing. After all, that is one of the reasons people started mixing it with Boxer, so it would be an easier dog to show and be less temperamental towards strangers. So if you want a traditional Corso make sure you spend extensive time in socializing to other dogs and strangers or else it could be over protective. Just like any dog you want a balanced dog that can be comfortable in any scenario. Socializing will not take away from their guarding instincts either, it's in their blood to know when to protect. It's a shame that there are people diluting the original breed but good traditional lines definitely exist. The quickest indicator in spotting traditional lines is the head structure and the body movement . Traditional Corso's eyes should almost captivate you, they should not be bulging in the slightest, there jaw should not be too undershot, and there movement should be almost cat like due to their long body and huge paws. There also not going to be overly hyper either. Especially upon meeting a stranger. Anyway, I hope this rant helps someone out who is interested in getting a corso.

      Breed for performance and you will eventually breed out the health issues in a breed.Great documentary on a great breed.Now that we know the true history,look and temperament of the breed -let's breed strictly for what it was intended for.Work.

      It’s infuriating that the American Kennel Club and others are trying to corrupt the old line. They’re trying to force the boxer face, head shape, etc.., and make it the new standard of the breed. Why the hell do they feel they need to do that? And what the hell right do they have changing the original dog?! It’s disgusting, not to mention makes the breed less healthy. 😡

    Ive had cane corso's for all my life, we've had 4 at my house so far. 3 of them died of a natural cause but our last one (Jax) had a brain disorder which made him extremely agressive, we had to put him down when he just turned one. I lost the trust in cane corso's that day but I am slowly regaining it and I truly want another one in like a year or 2. No one will care about this but I just had to let it out. Peace

      The so-called brain disorder, not only happen to this dog but also with German Sheperd. This often happens with very close in-line breeding from unreputed breeders! In-breeding goes both extreme, either extreme intelligence or super crazy & aggressive dog! It may also happen with other breed which I am not familier with.

    • @refelixia
      @refelixia 5 років тому +41

      I have no idea why most of the people who answered you are so aggressive, maybe, because of the "brain disorder" they have, but I am absolutely agree with you as a huge breed dog owner and a neurosurgeon, this kind of disorder exists

    I've been in Cane Corsos since 1996. The old dogs didn't have a specific name; they were mixtures of dogs. Then they took the dogs and bred them to their own specifics. You can't write your own standard of a dog that's already been established and that's the problem with the breed today. People keep breeding their own interpretations-bad bites, bad fronts, bad hips, etc.

At the ER first thing they asked before they told us his condition, they asked if we fed him grain free.. then charged us almost 2 grand to drain his stomach, following week our vet said they would of charged 45 for the visit and 52 to drain! 🤣🤣 fkn scum bags! Whole situation has literally made me sick.

    He isn't breeding the old time traditional corso. He said himself, the old traditional corso had a very stable temperament. But, this man doesn't even trust his corsos around dogs they haven't met before. The cane corsos were also not this large in the old times. He said he was replicating the 1949 "look". Thats not what they looked like hundreds of years ago.

    All they originate from Canis Pugnax and the closest to the breed dogs today are in Puglia (Italy)! At the begining there were just few dogs left ! Italians start efforts to got back the breed by mixing with other mastiffs like Neapolitanian one.... but americans were keen too and they tryied with Bullmastiff....That is why today we have Cane corso americano and italiano one! I'm also a happy owner of Cane-corso ! Corect me if I'm not so right! In regards of Presa or dogo canario is a different mastiff and history, originated after the conquest, even their attitude and specifics are different, at least they are much longer with longer muzzle too! Cane corso is shorter and seems even higher with larger ,shorter and bigger looking head! As usual Presa are more agressive and difficult to train ...they used to be more farmer guardians than family or personal!
    Any way- good movie!

      I don't know about dogs but if it's anything like horses there are certain breeds you're allowed to cross with and still have them registered under a breed. Like if you breed a German Warmblood to a thoroughbred the foal can be registered as German Warmblood. Horses aren't dogs though so idk if it works the same.
