      God bless you all as well, from Connecticut. I'm 49, and grew up on country music. I'm extremely thankful for all of the resources we have to listen to all of this great material. You can find just about anything that's ever been recorded. (Stolen line from Alan Jackson.)

    I saw the Outlaws concert in Albuquerque in the early 80s. Willie played encore after encore after, the band packed up and left him alone onstage picking and singing, until someone came out and literally dragged him offstage. As long as someone wanted to listen, Willie was going to play. A genuine troubadour....what a generous man!

    He is one of, if not the greatest country song writer of all time. There is no one like him and we need to treasure him while he's still here. Not the greatest singer; distinct and unique, but technically not the greatest guitar player; but he is able to create beautiful music that reaches into your soul. And every time I hear him, I think of my recently deceased father, who loved Willie and taught me to do the same.

      I'm always a bit bemused by comments like this, and they're on every older country musician's videos. These people lived incredibly different lives in situations entirely foreign to anyone of a much younger generation. For instance, Johnny Cash as a teenage sharecropper watched his older brother be disemboweled by a saw blade and bleed to death while working on fencing. Of course their music is going to sound different, *everything* about them is different!

      Yes, in my opinion Willie is leagues better than Dylan. Dylan writes a lot of nonsensical shit that elitists make pretend makes sense, but it doesn't nor does a lot of Dylans stuff touch the heart. Willies does. Talk to any songwriter, the hardest songs to write are the ones that touch the heart. "Tamborine man" is nonsensical crap about a guy shaking change in front of a juke box. "You were always on my mind" is real.

    One of the finest guitar accompaniments I've ever heard. His mastery of the guitar is so under-appreciated due to his songwriting, voice, and style. It seems he's improvising and making it up on the fly as he's going along too. Listen to the rhythmical changes and soulful, jazzy, and in some places even flamenco-ish instrumental riffs during his solos. Brings tears to my eyes. Just look at the faces of his peers as they listen to his fingers skate over that fretboard.

    Willie epitomizes a musician who has spent a lifetime reaching and growing into their craft. His 1962 version is solid, but it pales in comparison to the incredible depth his voice has here and the harmonic adventuring in his fearless improvisation.

    • @runi5413
      @runi5413 4 роки тому +8

      Yeah, well said. I think he created a really interesting dichotomy between himself and the band in this version. The way he drags his tempo, doing all kinds of wild, jazzy improv stuff with his left hand and still manages to hit all the key strokes and notes is really brilliant. And the guy just makes it sound so damn effortless...
      I also really love his choice of instrument here; He's playing an old, beat-up guitar that actually _sounds_ like an old, beat-up guitar. It adds a whole lot of character to an already great tune, and it really fits perfectly with the sentimental character of the song.

      He once wrote great songs, the earliest of them recorded first by others and then himself, while also recording songs written by others. There are few equals to Willie when he was at his songwriting prime in the late fifties through seventies. But he hasn't written a heck of a whole lot of consequence since the first half of the 1980s, when he wrote 'On the Road Again' at the request of the producer of the movie "Honeysuckle Rose" which starred Willie Nelson, 'Half A Man' in 1983, and Forgiving You Was Easy 1984. 'Me and Paul' wasn't recorded until 1984 and released in 1985, but it was written in the early 1970s. Though he has continued to make some incredible records, most of the songs that have carried them were either written by others or written by Nelson prior to about 1980. The most notable exception I can think of is 1993's 'Still Is Still Moving Me'. From 1994 until 2014 Willie didn't record any original self-penned albums at all, and from 2014 on everything original has been co-written with producer Buddy Cannon getting first billing in the credits.
      In the end, the singular song that one must always go back to when considering how Willie Hugh Nelson became "Willie" is 'Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain'. It was written by Fred Rose in the 1940s. It was recorded by Roy Acuff, Hank Williams, Ferlin Husky, Slim Whitman, Gene Vincent, Whispering Bill Anderson, Hank Snow, and Conway Twitty in the 30 years before Willie got around to recording it. After "Red Headed Stranger", everyone forgot about all of those other versions. That's what makes Willie Nelson who he most is.

      Michael Clark When artists are evaluated, it has been said, their creative years are when they are in their 20’s and 30’s. That’s okay. The original ideas and the well goes dry after twenty years of writing. Then, artists can perform and go on tour. The public joys seeing them perform live. The public can applaud the artist and say thank you for all the enjoyment they have given us. Hello Walls is still my Willie favorite.

      I'm in a similar situation at the moment. For some reason, this song manages to express exactly what I'm feeling and the word "melancholy" you used its the best way to describe it. Willie makes me feel like no matter how important something is, time always make sure to keep the pace and the tempo, leaving everything good and bad in the past. And even though I still love this someone, time will still slip away...

    • @michaelclark9762
      @michaelclark9762 4 роки тому

      @Oak Hill Porter realized he would never be as good a songwriter or entertainer as Dolly. That's why he fought so hard to keep her under his thumb before she left his show (and creative control offstage as well). Had he given her the freedom she craved within the framework of his management, she would probably have stayed longer than she did.

    Been a fan of Willie's for a long time now. Impressed by how much his peers are listening in awe and respect, relating to the story being told. I'm right with y'all and many thanks to you Willie, for sharing everything with us. God Bless ya Willie.

    Forget the song, watch Kris's face. :) Priceless. His face expressions truly indicate he is a song writer. He plans and feels this stuff. The brows waiting for the hook, his approval of the chorus, his relief at the end, it's done.

    You know you paid your dues, you know you are legend, you know you have made it. You walk on any stage, into any bar, gay bar, country bar, metal bar or the grand ole opry stage. You are 70ish with braided pigtails and a cowboy hat and pull out a 50 year old guitar with holes in it and do this, there will be hush and awe and a profound respect and gratitude for what you have done for music. Willy could do this, the only other I know is Elvis or Freddy Mercury.

      @Willie Nelson 🔵 i have been a fan since I was stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas (1977). I'm from New York... born in Italy...but always loved country music...Buck Owens and Eddie Arnold were my first introduction to country (1963). Then I graduated to Willie, Waylon, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and the rest of the gang... I was never as happy as when I was listening to you guys. I thank God I was lucky enough to listen to your music... it's heaven on earth. Thank you sir for your talent and especially your voice and Trigger's notes. Your music has completed my life... it's that amazing. I still listen to your music every day of my life and plan to do so until the good Lord calls me back home.

      @Willie Nelson 🔵 if this is Willie, how did i become so lucky ss to be contacted by one of the greatest artist of all time? I would never insult you or anyone for that matter. I don't mistreat people...I wouldn't even think of it. Please tell me the truth... is this the one and only Willie Nelson? I suspect not as Willie would never refer to himself as "the great." We would, but not Willie. So I suspect that something is amiss. So disappointed.
