Pikmin 4 is my GOTY, no doubt. They somehow elevated the formula of an already near-perfect series to new heights, bringing together the best of Pikmins 1-3, and I will be grateful for that for years to come.
I have the cart, but haven’t played it yet. I adored Pikmin 3 so I’m super excited to hear all the hype surrounding the fourth entry!
Love seeing Octopath Traveler 2 so high! As much as it is a love letter to old-school jrpgs, it feels fresh and modern. More so than the first Octopath, this feels like the series really solidifying it's own identity, and standing on equal ground to the greats of decades past; not just paying homage to them.
Slight Clarification:
Cocoon isn’t a Playdead game, rather it was made by a lead designer of Limbo and Inside who left the company back in 2016 right after the latter released. This is of course not to be confused with the Co-Founder who left the company back in 2016 right after Inside released who then went on to make Somorville.
F-Zero 99 is super underrated. It's chaotic, crazy, fun. What's most revealing is that everytime I play, I'm really pissed when Mute City comes up as a choice because 80% of the time, players massively vote for that track, again and again. Yet whenever I play that circuit (i.e., extremely often due to the votes), I somehow never get bored because the scenario plays so differently everytime. It never gets repetitive. A new 3-D F zero game MUST incorporate such an online mode.
I know it’s a remaster but I fell in love with the Baten Kaitos HD games released this year. I missed out on them in my GameCube days and knowing now that they’re from MonolithSoft I wasn’t about to miss out on them a second time. Wonderful card based RPGs with some gorgeous background art. Would strongly recommend them.
It was a big thing at the time for lots of players when it got announced that the GC will receive Tales of Symphonia and Baten Kaitos. I purchased both and while I played ToS a lot more than BK, since the former was more replayable for me, BK is more memorable to me than ToS. The only issue at the time I saw with BK is the pace of combat, a little bit slow. The remaster fixed that issue apparently.
I wanna get them at some point but there’s so many good games coming out all the time 😅
The _Baten Kaitos_ remasters should’ve been mentioned as they were fantastic. I played them for the first time this year, and they’ve already entered my top 5 list of video game series.
Personally, I enjoyed these games more than even TotK since these games have more focus on story and characters while also having ironically deeper combat systems than BotW/TotK.
Remember when people were convinced the Switch wasn't going to have much in 2023 after TotK? What an incredible year of games this was .
Xenoblade 3 Future Redeemed is easily my GOTY. It was such a good sendoff to everything built up over 1, 2, and 3. Glad I got to see Rex one more time. Loved Octopath 2 as well. If Xenoblade wasn’t here, Octopath 2 would be my GOTY.
Glad that Bayonetta Origins gets some love. Still my Goty 2023. It felt like a cheeky way of making Ōkami 2 without actually doing it (still hoping for Ōkami 2 someday)
As silly as it is, I think my GOTY was Suika Game. I love little puzzle games that have a great gameplay loop, and that game really fit the bill perfectly
How suika is mind-blowing ???
I feel like I'm taking part in some government mind control/monitoring program whenever I play that game. Like, it's so simple and requires so little attention, I'm certain there's alternative motives behind it all... :s
…
My personal GOTY is Octopath Traveler II, so I’m happy to see it so high on your list! I feel like so many people are sleeping on this game. As you say in the video, it outshines the first game in every imaginable way and in my opinion is genuinely one of the best RPG’s ever made. Hopefully more people give it a chance!
Unfortunately I can only play so many 80 hours long jrpgs and this gen it was Xenoblade 3 (loved it). I'd like to play octopath 2 but... :/
@@Wiizpig Good choice! Xenoblade 3 is my favorite game of all time and Octopath II is my second favorite. Can't go wrong with either one lol 😂
Honestly a really great year for switch games! My favorite switch game released this year was Yohane the Parhelion: Blaze in the DeepBlue, it’s a fun little metroidvania made by inti creates, based off the Love Live IP (idol girls anime except this is set in a fantasy universe), which is such a weird concept to mix it with but it works really well, and inti creates has a really good reputation so I’m not surprised it turned out good :)
Even if TotK was by and large my favorite Switch game of 2023 due to making me feel like I played BotW for the first time again (and I honestly couldn’t put it down for the entire 180 hours I played it), this was an insanely stacked and amazing year for the Switch. I also largely enjoyed Fire Emblem Engage, Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Deluxe, Metroid Prime Remastered, Bayonetta Origins, Pikmin 4, Mario Wonder, and last but not least, Super Mario RPG. And I can only hope that 2024 will be able to somewhat measure up to it, even as the likelihood of a Switch successor draw nearer.
Ghost Trick was awesome, I got it when you guys reacted so excitedly during its direct announcement - it is one of the best games of the year!
2023 has been a great year for games, and there were plenty of banger choices. However, the one that stick out to me is Super Mario RPG Remake. As someone who experienced Mario RPG for the first time, the game was breathtaking, and full with so much charm and creativity that despite few issues with it, they manage to adapted a classic for the Switch very well. Super Mario Bros Wonder is also another contender for my game of the year. Sure, I wish it was more challenging, and I really wish the bosses were good, but it was something we need for 2D Mario for decades, and it definitely deliver. Also, it has playable Daisy, 10/10.
I know it’s a collection, but for me, I have to give my top spot to Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection. It’s such a joy to have these games back, and the presentation they’re given is just wonderful. Even just navigating the menus is a blast of fun. It’s kind of a perfect compilation.
I'm so happy you put A Space for the unbound on your list. It was so good and deserves more attention
This list was flawless. Thanks Jon. I’m thrilled that 90% of these games are in my physical collection. I do own all of the games except for one (Cocoon). Looks like that will be my next adventure.
We have the same top 2 just in reverse order so happy to see octopath 2 get some love
Octopath traveller 2. This yr was a banger
Thank god someone else is out here giving Octopath 2 it's dues!
I think my GotY was TotK... Something about it resonated hard with me. I personally had more fun with that than BotW or any game this year
For me, it's between TOTK and Metroid Prime remastered.
@@LostnFound1026 would you like a cookie for your pointless comment?
@@esmooth919 Prime Remastered is a close second for me
for me totk is fucking insane because it's impossible how the game physics are, it's like black magic on a 6 yo tablet, I'm still impressed that it just works.
100% agree BotW I really enjoyed and loved it for the 70 hours I played it before I felt I had enough and moved on, TotK I played for 230 hours before I had done everything I wanted to do in it
DQM Dark Prince is a childhood game for me. DQM in Gameboy Color was a blast. Perfect game 10/10
Jon would you recommend the first Star Ocean on Switch?
I know these are remasters. But Kirby: Return to Dreamland DX and Metroid Prime Remastered are hands down my 2023 Game of the Year. I haven't played Super Mario RPG Remake yet. But I know that game will be up there as well. Not only are these some of the best remasters Nintendo & HAL has ever made, but they felt like an bring new game into that era. It's just so brilliant to see these games that we once know & love getting an humongous upgrade and put alot love & care for these franchises.
Honorable mentions are Pizza Tower, Super Mario Bros. Wonders, Pikmin 4, Advance 1 & 2 Reboot & Sea of Star.
One mighty fine list alright!
Great list mate
As Zelda is my favorite series, Tears was also my favorite release of the year.
Tears by far the bomb…..🧡💪🏽
Good job bro!
I absolutely loved the battle system and animation of FE Engage, so I hope they continue that in the next series.
TOTK, PikMin4, Mario Wonder…BANGERS.
Really solid list. I can't think of anything you might have left off
4:22 For a moment I thought that Tactica runs at 60fps on the Switch. Got me there, Jon
can i play octopath traveler 2 without playing the first one?
Yes, completely different worlds and characters.
I'm pretty sure you can; not too familiar with the series, but I think I saw that you don't have to play the original somewhere
Tears of the kingdom is my goty. But the rest of my top 5 are all on playstation.
Re4 remake, baldurs gate, cyberpunk dlc, dead space, street fighter 6
Although xenoblade 3 future redeemed was incredible. Loved the base game so much and the dlc didnt disappoint.
Metroid prime remasterd and pikmin 4 were also amazing.
John's love for Octopath Traveler II and Pikmin 4 - between this and his top 10 video- is infectious.😶It helps that they're also a turn-based RPG with phenomonal music and a puzzle/strategy platformer respectively; two of my favorite sorts of games.
I'm looking forward to the day(s) I can give them both a go! ^_^
Advance Wars only barely making the list is crazy to me - it's so so good.
Awesome to see Ghost Trick so high up!
Will we get a Future Redeemed physical? I keep putting off buying the download as I'd rather get a physical copy.
It was a great year!
Return to Dreamland Deluxe was prob my GOTY due to my attachment to the original. Unfortunately it didn’t make the list, but I get it. The overall package is fantastic, but the main game isn’t like THE BEST Kirby game of all time. It’s just really damn good.
Is the dragon quest monster wrangler game rly that good? I played the demo and it felt like work. Does the demo represent the full game properly??
The best thing about Metroid Primce Remaster, that most devs dont think of, are the HUGE amount of control options. ui can have any comination of classic cube, twin stick fps style, gyro, and even custom, ize the amount of gyro sensitivity, either or in the X or Y axis of your choice. If you did not know, keep scroling down in control setitngs to fine tune gyro controls even further.
I would have added Story of Seasons: It’s A Wonderful Life to this list. I loved revisiting my favorite Harvest Moon with enhanced features - it was loaded with nostalgia
XC3 Future Redeemed is my number 1.
Ghost Trick is probably my number 2.
I stand corrected! I bought at launch and beat it recently but dindt realize it was that long ago
In terms of Switch games, my GOTY was Ghost Trick; great gameplay loop with an intriguing story and music! FE Engage and Kirby's Return to Dreamland DX also deserve a mention, hopefully Super Mario RPG and Mario Wonder make it on my list (haven't played them yet, hoping to get them for Christmas)
Well, I definitely don't agree with your number one pick, but as you said, this is your opinion list, not some faux-objective review, so that's a valid option.
I really need to play OP2, though.
Ghost Trick is so good! It's one of the best narrative experiences in a game that I've ever played.
Ghost Trick deserves all the accolades and praise
Watching this I realize I skipped a lot of games that were on my radar. I kinda hope next year won't be too stacked so I can play what I couldn't this year
It was so nice to have probably the last big year of the switch end with another top tier mario and zelda game like the first year, and extra props for mentioning the devs, my favorite story from this year probably has to go to the development of Mario Wonder, Nintendo proving that even with a well established IP giving devs the opportunity to run wild leads to some unforgettable moments. Onwards to 2024!
heck yes, another fellow Theatrhythm Final Bar Line enjoyer!
Really excited for Another Code, ngl.
Jon with the amazing taste yet again
I have like 60 hours on Fzero 99... Definitely top 3 for me. Crazy
What happened to Steve's game of the month series? I loved those videos, hopefully they will redo the series in 2024! Great work GVG!
He said in a recent GVGCast that he stopped doing those videos because they weren't performing well enough.
@@C_Arson not sure if you can judge that from 3 videos but fair enough
I can't help but completely agree with John on Ghost Trick. It might not be my personal game of the year, and I'll admit I was skeptical initially for it being $30, but after playing it, it might be one of the few truly perfect games I've ever played. The pacing is perfect for a 15 hour game, the puzzles are so fun and unique but don't overstay their welcome because of the overall runtime, the characters are all very memorable and interesting, and the writing overall is hilarious and some of the most wild and hilarious writing in a game I've played this year. It might be confusing at points, but it's a detective game, and it all makes perfect sense by the end, giving it a great conclusion.
And of course, I'd be doing it a disservice to forget the bestest boy MISSILE WE LOVE MISSILE WOOOOOOOO
EDIT: It's on the list!!!
No love for Star Ocean: Second Story R?
Absolutely a masterpiece of a remake for a masterpiece of an RPG.
Not a single soul was talking about Baten Kaitos in 2023. It makes me so sad that it repeats its history and nobody even knows about that gem.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was my personal game of the year but also my, favourite game it expanded the world of BOTW while adding, some new gameplay elements. Also I really enjoyed Super Mario Bros. Wonder it was just a fresh unique take on 2D Mario with great gameplay that was needed. Super Mario RPG has been fantastic too.
Also curious, did you consider disgaea 7?
Well, that certainly was a list.
My game of the year was Pikmin 4, such a fun and charming game!
My favorite Switch game of the year has to be either Tears of the Kingdom or Pikmin 4. Still hard to believe we finally got the latter after 10 years since the last mainline Pikmin game. My favorite game I played this year that was released during a previous year is Persona 5 Royal. Assuming the Switch successor comes out next year, which is looking likely, the Switch had it's full final year be a strong one.
My GotY are Wonder, TotK, and Suika.
I have the same top two. Lots of people seem to be missing out on Octopath traveler II greatness. My third pick is Chained Echoes, which released a year ago, too late for GOTY discussions and too early for this years GOTY discussions it seems. Too bad, it's fantastic (even better than Sea of Stars imo).
Puzzle Bobble Every Bubble! #1
Ive only rated 4 games with a 10/10 this year. Tears of the Kingdom, Metroid Prime Remastered, Spider-Man 2 and Remnant 2. My favorite out of these was definitely TotK, some parts of it were my favorite parts in gaming that ive experienced. The climb up the Rising Chain Islands to leap down to the Stormwind Ark was simply perfection. Same with the final act of the game, its chefs kiss.
Now do one for PlayStation and Xbox
A lot of people might be surprised or hate me for choosing this but my game of the year Is
AEW Fight Forever
Yes I got It on Switch and It's not perfect but It Is finally a big budget wrestling game on Switch
It brings back the fun gameplay of No Mercy and HCTP and unlike the WWE 2K games they plan to update this over time rather than making a new £60 game with a £30 season pass plus extra DLC that Isn't part of the DLC
and best of all no microtransactions
It might be lacking In create modes but the gameplay Is the star of the show here
on top of that the road to elite single player Is so fun to replay
we even got a fortnite like stadium stampede match and while It hasn't come to Switch yet we also have beat the elite which Is a mode where you beat wrestlers In a row to unlock new creation colors and parts which they Just added the ability to edit In game wrestlers
so If you wanted you could be unique and make a red Sting or gold Matt Hardy
This game has so much potential and It's a shame people pick It up once and decide they hate It because It's not WWE 2K
Lmao Idek how many games I played from this year outside of TOTK, this year was mad busy and stressful. I think my greatest gaming memory this year honestly was playing Smash Ultimate with my friends drunk, and beating Donkey Kong Country and Metal Slug with my girlfriend 😂 I’ll probably play all the games from this year next year in typical fashion
Dud i know exactly what you mean. I also beat DK tropical freeze with my 5 yr old and it was a lot tougher than i expected. I waited until earlier this month to by totk because ive had such a busy year and i was afraid i would get too addicted.. it was a smart move because I've spent almost every single free moment playing it since then. I can't believe how ridiculously good it is
@@rockydon3400 I feel that, I also played Tropical Freeze this year!
Gota love list style videos that don't have the list broken down into time stamps...
what do you have against fishing? No Dredge or Dave the Diver???
Technically, this was the Switch's seventh year, and it is six years ago the Switch launched, but many people make that mistake.
Is it weird that I’m already nostalgic for Fire Emblem Engage?
Game of the year criteria for this video... "does it have elves or shorts on anime girls?"
Ghost Trick went from SD to HD... That's a remaster right there 😅
Bayonetta Origins actually has combos
Octopath Traveler at number 2 = very good taste, this game was insanely good.
Xenoblade 3 Future Redeemed is the best game for me in 2023. Even though it's DLC. The story payoff for long time fans is absolutely peak.
Almost could have been titled top 20 RPGs on switch.
What is your favorite part of the story of Sea of Stars?
As much as I love Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, my actual Game of the Year is actually Trails from Zero: maybe I'm just a total weeb, but I found the story and characters really appealing in a way most modern animé haven't done in a while🤩
Batman Arkham Asylum on switch is my #1 this year. TOTK was great…deserving but Asylum has me more interested and hooked, with a better story.
UA-cam engagement! Octopath 2! That is all.
The only disagree would be Xenoblade 3 Future Redeemed, and how it should be higher, perhaps even top 5. Even though it's a game you should, if not have to, play last after playing all the previous games before first. It's not just that it had a great story, that pays homages to the whole series, in a way that base game should have done. Or that the characters are very good in this, even if not all of them got good enough spotlight. But it's the fact that the gameplay is so very good, with a system that rewards you for doing things you either used to do all the time before, or never bothered with.
Something that culminates from many previous things, like the Collectpedia like Xenoblade 1 has, exploring locations, fighting monsters, and the newest form of "heart-to-heart" where the characters talk about certain landscapes. All just comes around and gives you lots of points, to help upgrade your characters own skill trees. Even on the exploring part, is what it takes to get you expansion kits, to give you more accessories or gem slots, and even more skills to unlock. Even side quests can give you that. Just a lot to incentivize you to doing just about everything, unlike before in every previous game.
Almost like Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask, but more on a gameplay aspect, gives many reasons to go out and do things you've been doing before even more, or something you haven't done before. Practically almost addictive cycle gameplay loop, and something that (along side with base game's side quests) most games, if not definitely RPGs, should strive for. A golden standard one might say.
Honest to God: Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and The Lost Demon, might be my Game of the Year (either that or Tears of the Kingdom). It's a relatively simple game, but it was beautifully done, with a story that genuinely surprised me and actually got me kind of emotional at times. It'll always have a special place in my heart.
There has now been more time since BotW and the launch of Switch to now
Then the time between the launch of the 3DS - The Switch and BotW
My brain is not letting me accept that
My goty is ToTk. 2nd best game for is Pikmin 4 😊
I love Fire Emblem engage.
Advance Wars almost lost out to Dokapon Kingdom, that’s how you know very few people cared about when it came out lol. At least it is here.
Should have made it 23 games
Pikmin 4 is the greatest switch game of 2023 by a mile
This year had too many remakes/rehashes to be considered the best year. 2017 still has yet to be topped imo
TotK>>>>>>>>>>>>>BotW
Nahhh the best part of sea of stars was the music. Everything else needed more time to cook
I’m still hoping future redeemed actually gets a physical version as I’d love that.
Really enjoyed bayonetta 1 and 2❤ did not like 3 at all👻☠️ as I personally feel it was an insult to Bayonetta
for me theirs only 2 games in the series.
Have not tried raincode or sea of stars yet so I’ll check them out as they see really interesting, same with the dark prince❤ thanks for the video
"21 best switch games" You know a channel is struggling for content when this drops. Make an effort guys!
JOOONNNN
*WHERE'S KIRBY'S RETURN TO DREAMLAND DELUXEEEEE????????*
Mising Bayonetta 3 ont he list ^^
Bayonetta 3 came out last year
