This has got to be biggest most radiant voice of anyone EVER!
GLEAMING! Powerful! HUGE! I don't think there is anyone quite like this, then or now!

She was one of the great Wagnerian sopranos. Flagstad, Traubel, Nilsson, Marton, Norman, and Gwyneth Jones. There are no such sopranos today.

Her singing is outrageous. At her best, certainly no other soprano was able to match her combination of beauty and power. I wish I'd had the chance to see her live.

This is really impressive. I got to hear her live a few times in Munch and you can take it from me; not only was her voice incredibly vibrant, it was also loud as hell! The orchestra could do whatever they wanted. she just cut right through. I'd never heard anything like it

She was a phenomenon. Even her soft singing was loud, but when she let loose, it pinned you to the back wall.

Fantastic Gwyneth ! She's the best Brunnhild ever. Even then, rather late in her carrier, she's such in good shape ans gives an extraodinary rendition of that scene. Love you Gwyneth, you are the best !

This is so amazing. Jones was the best Brunnhilde ever...and when she was ON (which was more often than not - she got a bad rap), she was just unbeatable in MOST of the roles she sang. Such an ENORMOUS voice, it's amazing she was ever able to control it.

She's in great voice here. The scooping and wobbling is at a minimum...bravo, Gwyneth!

Stunning in every aspect. Dame Gwyneth was the benchmark by whom all were compared. Few came even close.

Unreal performance! What breath control, dynamism, musicality, diction (all words are pronounced properly) and what about those hight notes! She nails each one amazingly, at 55! Turn in your grave, Helen Traubel! This is how Wagner must sound like.

I think this is the best I have ever heard her sing this music. There really is no one to touch her when she's as good as this. Thank you for reminding us of this performance.

Roughly a year before this, I heard her sing 'Easter Hymn' at Westminster Abbey at a memorial service with the orchestra of the ROH. She was astonishing, she made the windows rattle, and I was, and still am, in awe. Utter power and beauty.

Saw her quite a few times in New York: Tristan, The Ring, Salome, Elektra, Rosenkavalier, Fidelio, Turandot. When she was in good form, there was no one to match the beauty and power of that voice. Sometimes she wasn't so good. But she was always riveting.

One of the great Wagnerian singers of all time.

I saw her at the ROH in the late 80s - and in one of the breaks, my brother and I got chatting to a couple of the orchestral players (back from the pub, presumably) - and THEY were impressed by her. Sexiest Brunnhilde ever.

Breathtaking. Glorious beyond words. Wish we had the applause, too - I'm sure the audience went bonkers!

I remember watching this (alas, only on tv rather than in the hall) and they went NUTS!

Wow, was she on fire this evening... pun intended. It's astounding that she was 55 at the time - she sounds way better than she did in the Chereau recording 10 years earlier.

For me, there is Flagstad, Jones, and then everyone else. In the 1990s I heard a Saturday Met broadcast of Gotterdammerung. I just tuned on the radio, not knowing who was singing, and I nearly fell off my chair. This was a true Brunnhilde voice!

I think Miss Gwyneth was 60 years or most in this role, but is Fantastic!

    @BeauTenor
Kirsten Flagstad, Birgit Nilsson, Frida Leider, Marjorie Lawrence all so easily dismissed?
I won't disagree, though, that Jones is at her peak here.

She sings in the new film, "Quartet", and she's still got it.

The constant scooping into high notes I find intolerable very quickly
