  • You have to understand the place this instrument has in my life. When I first fell in love with dulcimer, I fell in love with the music and the person and life of David Schnaufer, and I also fell in love with his main instrument from back then, the sound AND the look. It was built 31 years ago. I don’t believe he’s played it since about 1995 or so. It was shipped in the original case with all the original stickers and everything.
Now here’s the real kicker. I’ve played every dulcimer I could get my hands on from all over the world for at least 23 years. I fully expected to be a bit disappointed in the sound of this one. It’s from a different time. It’s from a builder who really didn’t spend much time building dulcimers, as far as I know. The smartest and best luthiers, even these folks struggle to find THAT SOUND.
This is truly amazing. I’m trying to check my bias, but the sustain and the tone and the balance, it’s a masterpiece.
I don’t consider that I own this. This belongs to the universe. I paid money to be a temporary steward of this active piece of history. I want it to keep making music.
    Thank you, David Schnaufer.

Special comments. I have a 1963 Martin D-28...Brazilian Rosewood back and sides.... that my Dad bought new. He passed away in 1981, but I can put my ear to that guitar and still hear him playing. It's a special instrument.

That instrument could have not found a better home. David is looking down happy as he can be that a friend of his past will be able to make new music with. God Bless you.

Mike was my next door neighbor growing up. I'm willing to bet I watched the build on this. Michael made beautiful autoharps ....anything with strings. And played them all! He made a autoharp for The Mr Roy Rodgers from "Hee Haw"! He definitely was a master at his craft. Great guy! Stumbled across your video and about fell over! Very cool!

Peggy’s Facebook page says…”I’m playing my Moses Schribner MD that was made for David Schnauffer. I acquired it from David in 1996 and have really enjoyed playing it since that time.”
Her acquisition of David’s dulcimer was about 10 yrs before David passed away. I’m amazed that this dulcimer now chose you! 💕
    Enjoy! 👍🏻

Hey Steve, Tim from Starlings here. This just popped into my feed. Made me tear up a bit. I still have the electric black teardrop he did some infamous recordings with. Most importantly thank you for your influence. You and Dave were absolutely magical every time I saw you.

Having spent some time with Moses,as well as David back in the days, I commend you for appreciating the absolute beauty of both sound and workmanship that Moses did. All in a little garage off the back of a house on Belcourt Avenue in Nashville

Just watched an old TNN show featuring David with that very same Dulcimer. He played “I’m So Lonesome I could Cry” it was on UA-cam, then he was interviewed and he said he had been playing for almost 20 years. Thought you might like to see it. Thanks for all you do. God Bless.

Well if that's not a great birthday present to yourself, I don't know what is!
I know you may not believe it, but I bet a lot of people who watch your videos & listen to you would feel the same if they were able to get their hands on one of your dulcimers. And they were inspired by you much like you were by David. For me personally, it was your two of your videos, Norwegian Wood & Blackest Crow and Spanish Fandango that made me want to get my first dulcimer. That sound just grabbed me and wouldn't let go. As luck would have it, around that time a local music shop had a used one for a little over a hundred bucks. It's around 20 years old, a bit beat up and needs a bit of work. But for now, it's enough for me. That joy I get when just picking away sort of mindlessly and then I get one of those moments like "Oh man that was nice... now how did I do that?" ... that's because of you. And through you, because of David.
So a very sincere "Thank you." To both of you.
I look forward to all the music you'll be making in the future with your new old dulcimer! Now excuse me as I go back through the video and try to steal some of your licks!

Flamed Koa and spruce. Ebony edge binding. Ebony tail and Head blocks. Abalone purfling and headstock inlay. Pretty sure it’s got a nitrocellulose finish but not certain. Also guessing the tuners are mini Schallers. Guessing the onboard pickup is a piezoelectric but it could be a contact mic. Great piece of history. Congrats on your being able to steward this great instrument.

Went to you tube and listened to David play Wildwood Flower back in 1989 and it looked as if he was playing this dulcimer! He mentioned Joe Scribner playing the dulcimer. Mr. Seifert thanks for sharing something so close to your heart. Watching you play David's dulcimer eerily connect you two together again.

I recently “discovered” David, and bought his downloadable course, Learning Mountain Dulcimer.
If he’s not playing your dulcimer in it, then it is it’s twin. Near the end of the course is a section where he talks about the instrument, which he says was designed by himself and Michael Schribner. Koa wood, full bodied, low action. He talks about the different parts and why he chose to do them the way he did. Pickup by Lloyd Baggs in California. Somewhere he mentions calling with questions to Schnauffer & Schribner in Nashville TN. Anyway, I think that that part of the video would be cool to have to go with the instrument. (History, posterity, etc.)
Also, he said he had 2 books, that were just about out, one a scales study book and the other with country music called Dulcimer Country. Any idea what happened with those books? I did interned searches and couldn’t find any book by him.

    • @stephenseifert
      @stephenseifert  3 роки тому

You're right. I'm going to get it out and check it out. What would have been the scale book perhaps ended up in the printed notes I think originally came with this video. Other book is SWING NINE YARDS OF CALICO.
