But can I use it in a Song? Onward by Chase Bliss

- I was a bit skeptical by the Onward Pedal from Chase Bliss. Most of their pedals are COOL! BUT.. not that practical for my needs. The Onward pedal is a testament to that statement. It's very exploratory and helpful for artists wanting to explore new sonic territories, BUT I'm just trying to make some music with it.. And as you'll see, I end up changing my own mind mid video haha!

With all the glitch/sample/looper pedals out there which is your favorite? Seems like a lot of these exist now no?
torn between this and microcosm. feels like there's some overlap there...
There definitely is, but this seems to be a bit more focused and controlled, whereas Microcosm can be hard to steer or dial into a specific desired effect. In all honesty this seems to do many of the things I love about the Microcosm, although Microcosm has a great performative looper as well.
Red 🐼 Particle V2 & Tensor, Soma Cosmos (Rhythmic firmware), Glou-Glou Loupé, Eventide-UltraTap, Crystals, Looper, etc.-and some on this channel: ZOIA, Microcosm, Blooper, & Habit.
Meris Ottobit which kinda sorta fits the bill
I love Soma Cosmos, it puts you in a space to get lost in with your instrument. I like the fact there's different firmwares and also the fat it's quite large and tactile, satisfying to use.
FYI: Meris MIDI I/O sends MIDI Out via tip of TRS, but Chase Bliss pedals receive MIDI In on ring of TRS. From the manual for MIDI I/O: “For use with Chase Bliss pedals, you will need to create a custom cable, since they receive MIDI on the ring of the TRS cable (they currently do not transmit).” I recall having used some Hosa Y (insert?) adapters/cables (TRS to split TS) to swap tip with ring, in order to get MIDI into a Chase Bliss pedal.
Could just use a type a to b midi cable?
gosh, imagine a beautiful emotional ass intro with Onward being the main focus into a BANGER-ass house track.
Those chords are a vibe!
They had your "MIDI - dad hat" at perfect circuit. So, at least for now, you've become "Midi Dad" in my mind 😅 That said I fell like we're living in such an interesting time for pedals. I feel like I went at least a decade without a pedal catching my eye. Now from Hologram to Storymon, Chase Bliss to EAE. Can't wait to see what's next!
Love the gambling joke 😂
Side note... your voicings are sounding niiiiice!
Cool sounding pedal. Works good on an intro section of a techno/house track, and into the track keep a small sample as pad/drone. I find myself doing that with the MOOD
Yay! The famous grey button is back! The Digitakt II wears it very well, I must say!
I fancy more the yellow/orange one. The grey one is changed?
Onward is an amazing little magic box!
Dope as always!
in this episode i didn’t like the kick tho, because it was too much thumby midrange and too “tonal”, i would prefer more a low range kick like &ME in this track (my opinion)
this sounds exactly like the pedal i need to make 90s glitch sounds....amazing...
I’ve got the Meris Ottobit Jr which I really love, but I wonder how it compares with the Onward. I’ve got it paired with Generation Loss MKII, and I much prefer Chase Bliss’ pedal form factor. Hmm.. actually, I prefer the 1/4” jacks in the back… 😢😅
5:55 Beautiful
Reminds me a lot of an EHX SuperEgo+ - I may have to compare...but I'd have to buy one first. (thinks...)
I’ve owned and sold both CBA Mood and Mood MK2, they weren’t for me. Onward does look really cool though, seems like it could replace the EHX Superego which has been a stalwart on my pedalboard. Otherwise my favorite glitch pedal has always been the Malekko Charlie Foxtrot.
I'll pretty much always gamble on a pad. It's just a long sound, all the randomocity just adds interest, imo.
3:40 magic
What would be a VST you/ others would recommend to recreate this kind of effect in the DAW?
Under Cardinal/VCV Rack(Pro), Frozen Wasteland's Hair-Pick might be close depending on which settings are used.
Thanks to LTT, I admit that I saw the title once with one thumbnail but the “second” thumbnail did grab me. Or was it that I knew about the content and was ready the second time around?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
personally i would just mess around with it and the resample a ton
Jo, this is such a simple Jam but has so much emotional depth. I really need to take away from this not to overwhelm my productions :)
Not super surprised by the reaction - Onward, Habit, Blooper - not really built with the grid in mind - but they can be used in conjunction with it.
Definitely has a sound
My favourite: Hologram Electronics "Microcosm"
"Mood" and "Onward" are on the list though.
How’s it sound with drum breaks going through it?
Glitchy..
This pedal was not what I expected it to be, sounds pretty nifty. Texture maker for sure.
Unrelated, was it just me or was the audio from the synth/pedal a bit ahead of the video or was it latency from the pedal doing whatever it does? Something seemed off...
Bliss pedals are very deep and maybe you would want to take a few months before rushing out the review. I had a few "a-ha" moments with Thermae and Bloom, let alone Generation Loss (my favourite to date) a few months after I got the pedals. And, as for the MIDI, I am almost 100% certain your cables dont match up, meaning, TRS out of Meris is not appropriate to Chase MIDI.
Kind of funny, the only one I have tried/owned is the Gen Loss mk2. I am going to guess you are using in more for keys? I am mainly a guitarist and besides using it after long delay lines or verb, I could not get along with it. They make great stuff, but that one was not for me I guess.
@@masterofreality230 yeah I do mostly use if with synths, with long sustained textures and percussion. I see what you mean, I think it can work for guitar especially in legendary v1 mode, but ofc if you did not dig it, there must be smt else out there for you:)
Sounds good to me 😅
The chords at the end were such a vibe. Sheesh!!! Thanks again Ricky 🎧 🍕 -Billie
Cool thanks for the demo as usual.
The proprietary midi thing is kind of bologna! But I do enjoy the 3 Chase Bliss pedals I have. I’ll probably just have to get their stupid little midi box eventually.
I wouldn't say "proprietary"... most of the midi boxes have dip switches or jumpers that you can change for different midi configs. It's not hard or that different, it seems like it just wasn't immediate for Ricky in this case.
Neat
I'd be happy to try the Chase Bliss pedals, but at 460€ (here in the EU), it has to be usable for more than just making a sample. What you seem to be achieving is easily doable in a DAW (plugin), why have a pedal sitting around?
BTW, I don't know if you can get them stateside, but some of the Drolo pedals are very interesting (too).
Great video(s) as always. I love your positive way of making music, and talking about it.
Everything is easier on a computer. But where’s the fun in that? 😉
@@leftmono1016 Yes, I know what you mean, and I totally agree, I'm working on a eurorack system. But, sometimes GAS confuses us, and although I think the Chase Bliss pedals look (and sound) amazing, I'm not sure that buying one to get 'a' sound really makes sense.
Many years back, I bought an Akai Remix 16 almost brand new from a studio in London, who'd used it to make 'one' sound for a commercial. They then put it in storage for 10 or 15 years, and then sold it to me for peanuts. I'll never know if they made loads of money from that one commercial, however, nowadays it's easier and cheaper just to use a plugin (which might even be free), to find your one sound (IMHO).
@@cardboardmusic the Drolo side of the CBA Mood and Mood Mkii is really excellent!
You need a retrokits rk-006!
The thing that bugs me about Onward is that every once in a while it randomly throws everything to the left or right side, and I almost never want that to happen. It can quickly ruin things, hah.
has to do with Spread, right? but is it random or still depends on source signal and its l/r distribution?
@@yurijogurtsov8710 I sent mine back. I couldn’t figure it out, but probably has something to do with the source signal, and it latching onto whatever side is loudest. I don’t think I ever turned on spread when I had it.
@@thelevicole that sounds crap mate. I've heard this in 2 or 3 demos happening occasionally, and wondered what the hell...
and all the kind and helpful synthfluencers will, ofc, keep their tongue in their... silence on that. not speaking about Ricky at all, as his demo is different.
@@thelevicole It is nice that they give people a trial period.
@@masterofreality230 agreed!
Love this setup. Piano, pedal, and of course... Digitakt.
love the digitakt grey button. where does it come from
nice .... but i'm priced out!
Silly question - is it very different from a Microcosm?
this is my biggest question as well...
ofcourse its different, but i see some overlap. plus microcosm has other benefits! like midi din sync
Onward gives much more control of the modulation in dialing in an exact sound, microcosm is great but the effects are more like presets you can play around with. Big advantage of the microcosm is that is has a looper and easy to access reverse effects.
Fuck this thing is cool.
I feel like this is a cool for five minutes pedal 😬
I have it a week and it's still cool after a few hours and Im only getting started.🤔
disaster area midi box is what i use for my meris and chase bliss
including the onward. They have diff settings, not sure if the meris box allows you to go inside and flip switches like the disaster area designs midi box.
It does not, but I have used a Y cable and swapped the tip/ring to use both on the same midi box
The Strymon Conduit and Morningstar MIDI box are both good alternatives for TRS MIDI which allow for proper configuration with T/R and R/T setups.
Mm…maybe? It’s inspiring, but? I must be bugging because you made me want to buy this.
how is nobody mentioning how digital in a bad way it sounds?
yes, while SRR is on (texture CCW) and worse when octave up. also Ricky had Length on, as he said (and showed) which reduces sample rate twice. when all this set to 0 it seems alright, no?
You don't need to record it.. when you stumble on a cool sound.. Just save it to a preset..theres over a hundred of them🤔
Can it *not* ring horribly?
maybe this was when both Octave was +1 and Texture CCW, which is sample (not bit) rate reduction (and its a bad one SRR, imo)
i think chase bliss stuff is great and unique for sure. But it is a freaking pedal... an expensive pedal... actually the worst way to house and implement an effects processor in my opinion.
I was thinking the same, this device is so far from needing this form factor IMO, user has to be able to quickly tweak the pots. And using stomp buttons with fingers is not great at all haha
Arturia efx fragments does almost the same thing and its $99 (or free)
Not to mention plugins being much easier to work with. Arturia make some of my favorites.
WTF happened to your Digitakt's func button?
That high pitched tinnitus aliasing type of frequency killed it for me. I like Chase Bliss pedals but this one does not sound good to me at all.
It's because of the texture knob. at 12 o'clock, no texture, to the left of 12, it's a bit/sample rate reduction, to the right it's saturation/overdrive. So it doesn't have to do that, but it can sound cool in certain situations.
Sample rate reduction + octave up + length x2 (more SRR!) is a recipe for that.
If it’s 500 dollars. Then no way. I’d rather buy a second hand telecast or a 101 Roland . Anyway interesting but nothing new .
Why does everyone like bit reduction? It sounds like sheit to me.
Ricky's got it wrong, it's not bitrate but sample rate reduction. SRR is rarely good sounding, but this one is particularly uninspiring. BRR is a different thing altogether
Doesn't sem that impressive considering it seems sound indentical to tge the Qu-Bit Data Bender, so identical its like chase bliss didn't even try, granted data bender if a eurorack module the fact that someone already like this exists, and a million times better sounding, cant get into
cmon.. CBA stopped trying long ago. check out Onward vs Mood by The Pedal Collaborative, it sounds like they just reused algos. that's alright, but lets face it, CB is not about revolution or experiment. but if it works for one's sound, then it does. I don't own any of their pedals anymore, but Onward is interesting for some very particular tasks for me.
what CBA could make, and I wonder why they don't grab the opportunity, is a larger format tabletop FX machine
......what a fantastic concept......a reviewer spends his own money......to review a product.....for an audience.....that has to spend their own money.....to buy the same product......apples to apples.....wow......mind blown
Sure, but if they spend their own money on the product, aren’t they going to be inherently biased to like the product and give it a good review? No one wants to feel like they wasted their money.
It’s when you gefopt use it for free you subconsciously feel like you owe it to be positive actually.
@@deastman2 well you could just return it then. Although I agree about t being inherently biased. Best case scenario, it's a subconscious bias. That being said. There are degrees to this, right???? And I believe that this channel and Loopop's are the best and most transparent ones still in the game. A couple others I think saw the handwriting on the wall and opted out. Benn Jordan comes to mind.
these pedals are way too expensive, no thanks
