Im 74 yrs old,my mother was from Belfast Ireland. When l was a young kid about 10yrs old my father told me about the caps with razor blades sewn into them, and he showed me the technique for swiping it across an opponents eyes,very insideous thing tp do. My father was flying a b17 for the army air corp he married my mom in Ireland and brought her over here as a war bride. When l heard the title "Peaky Blinders" l knew exactly what it meant. Cant wait to see the movie. One of my irish cousins looked just like Cillian Murphy. Who l find to be a phenominal actor.
The true peaky blinders were a truly vicious gang, the show tames it down, which says a lot cos the show portrays them as very vicious. The late 40s/50s saw a lot of young men who were traumatized by war (before any of that was recognised) come home to a broken country with things like rationing and used their warborn ferocity to rule their area. These people were bad but human, and were bad cos of what they'd gone through, the gangs nowadays are just bad cos they want to be and exploit rather than help(that's why the krays/Richardson's/peaky blinders etc were rarely "snitched" on cos they were genuinely helping the little people, although in a terrible way, but today's gangs want flashy jewelry and fast cars and use kids so they can't get arrested. Not saying I supported the old gangs, cos they did exploit small business owners too but just saying they'd come from a war and we're desensitized so violence wasn't an issue to them and Britain was struggling after what it had spent on the war and so they wanted to help their neighbours (and themselves of course) but there is a huge difference between those gangs and today's postcode crack dealers
