On January 29, 2024, the traditional feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel of San Sebastian took place. It was also a special day for Manila, as at the same time, the solemn declaration of the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno occurred. This was a significant day for Quiapo and, of course, the entire city of Manila, as two majestic and grand celebrations were held simultaneously. Additionally, this marked the first time since 2022 that the image of Nuestra Señora del Carmen de San Sebastian was enthroned to her Main Altar, also known as the “Retablo Mayor,” due to the ongoing restoration of the Minor Basilica.
There were two separate festival commemorations dedicated to Manila's Flower of Carmel: the religious observance on July 16 and the distinctive traditional festival on January 29. The January festival's origins were practical, stemming from the challenges posed by the rainy season in the country from June onwards, which hindered elaborate celebrations for the July Carmelite feast. Consequently, the Recollect Fathers sought a special occasion to honor the Virgin, closely tied to the feast of St. Sebastian, the Basilica's primary celebration, ensuring her recognition with the appropriate grandeur and reverence. This request was granted in 1691 through a Papal Bull, securing a perpetual permission for the festival.
