    "That feeling of naive joy, entwined with an overwhelming sense of existential dread". Genius!

    Alex, one mistake if I may.
    The top case of the rhythm machine is not set for making sandwiches originally but for preparing daiquiri cocktails. With a tiny paper umbrella.
    Very enjoyable and useful as usual. That chord progression is something to study for sure...

    That joke at the start re existential dread had me in tears

      Definitely the soundtrack of the apocalypse.

      It's funny but also true - I have a serious association with hospitals, death, and the smell of disinfectant with this kind of music playing softly through recessed speakers. Dentist drills and needles, too. An attempt to make these scary places a bit less scary back in the day backfired spectacularly - at least with me.

    Alex, I swear you can compose ANYTHING. It has the right sort of pleasant, leisure-suit-and-daiquiri-with-the-tiny-umbrella vibe. If it has a fault, it's that it's a little too interesting.

    I've always LOVED easy listening, cocktail, smooth jazz, elevator music for some reason. It's just so good. Thanks for explaining the chord progression that was really interesting.

    This is way better than any muzak I've ever heard, and I've been stuck in the wallpaper section of Trago Mills.

    This music is like a mix of "Elevator Muzak" and something from Jean-Jacques Perrey's "
    The Amazing New Electronic Pop Sound Of Jean Jacques Perrey (1968)". Childish happy vibe and surreal vibe. Alex, if you make plan to make an album of this kind of stuff, let me know, I'll buy it.

      I do love a spot of Jean-Jacques. His Ondioline stuff is particularly ace.

      I was floored. Its short length did leave me feeling a little shafted, though. With all of life's ups and downs, it's good to have music like this that pushes the right buttons.

    Haha brilliant! Muzak are so bizzare that its funny and you cant get enough of it. When I was a young music studen my fellow students and I could sit all evening drinking beer and listen to elevator music, laughing at it and loveing it at the same time🤣

    That Jean-Jacques Perrey vibe is amazing! You're getting an Ondioline sound out of that MS-20...so cool! Would love a tutorial on that

    • @AlexBallMusic
      @AlexBallMusic  5 років тому +2

      Always wanted to play an Ondioline. Enjoyed Gotye's recent project with one.
      MS-20: It's about creating a resonant band-pass sound with the two filters. Then some envelope on them to add in some wah-wah. Think the oscillators are just sawtooth in octaves. And that's about it.

    Really cool stuff! I couldn't understand like 90% of what you said or how to apply it other than vaguely note down the instruments and BPM as I'm self-taught but yeah really cool example of the genre 👍

    There was a local radio station that only played Elevator Music back in the 70s and 80s. There was minimal or no dj voiceover as well.

    Lol! That cheesy joy with existential threat! You know me! I don’t like elevators.
    I recently did a little video as a carrier for a piece of horror music I’d taken and rewritten. And I had to ride the elevator 4 times, 5 floors up and down... brrrr. And I chose the elevator because it’s inherent scary.

    Wonderful. I love Elevator Muzak. I did a presentation on it at a congress a year or so ago, which I recorded and uploaded to UA-cam. It's only had 47 views though, principally because it's shit. Yours, however, is great. I wish I had more views. Can I have some of yours?

    Hey Alex, bit of a technical question but how did you sync your DAW to the output of the drum machine?

    • @AlexBallMusic
      @AlexBallMusic  5 років тому

      Manually adjusted the tempo until it locked. You can go to three decimal places in Cubase.

      Yes, you're right, I missed a trick there. Could have gone Bm7b5 to E7/G# to Am11 too.
      Will have to do that next time I'm in an elevator.

    While I think you definitely nailed the breezy elevator music sound, I don’t really care for how you described it-“naive joy” combined with “existential dread”.
    You’re implying and echoing a common attitude about music I’ve noticed in the last 20 years-that bright, major chord, happy sounding music is lame and “naive”. And with all due respect, I think that’s bullshit. I’m tired of all the depressing shit that is put out today. And I think we’re overdue for a musical renaissance where fun, happy music is made again.
    Furthermore, the only reason why you associate elevator music with existential dread is because it’s just an overused trope in movies and TV. Elevator music playing in the background of a more sinister, gritty reality seemed edgy and amusing at first. But it’s overdone and boring now.
