When I was kid, like 8 or 9 years old, I found one of my dads paperback books by, Louis L'Amour, the title was, "To tame a land" , I asked my dad if I could read it, (Yeah back then we asked permission for just about everything), he told me to go for it, several days later, I finished that book, and my love the Wild West sparked up, .. I am 57 years old now, and I sometimes run across that old Louis L'Amour book, and even though I can damn near recite that book word for word, I will still buy it and get lost for a few hours re-reading that old story.

I'm that way about the Sackett Series, and the "Spinoffs" Borden Chantry & Milo Talon. I reread all 17 of the Sackett books more than a few times, and have never been the least bit bored reading books I've read the covers off every dang one. As an aside, I had a good friend when I lived in Oregon for almost 20 years, who was a Master at Plastering before he moved up to Oregon. He did more than a few "High Dollar" homes for the Rich Folks down in California. One of the home he did was Louis L'amour's. Took him over a month working every day in Louis' home. Said he was a very nice, down to earth type of guy & pleasant to be around, never talking to him like he was "The Help". He also told m that Louis had written one of his books sitting at a table that he'd set up in the Grassy Median of one of the Busy, smog & traffic filled LA Freeways. He didn't know which book, but it was one of the books he wrote toward the end of his life.....Sure wish I knew which book, though.
I can't say I've read every one of L' Amours' books, but I've read the vast majority & never came across a single one that I didn't enjoy.
I'm also a fan of Zane Grey's work & I've read all but a very few of his books & enjoyed them all. Considering the era that Grey wrote in(His first book "Betty Zane" was published in 1903, which became the first of what is called "The Ohio River Trilogy" that includes "The Spirit Of The Border, published in 1906, and the final book "The Last Trail" published in 1909(The year my Father was born). I've read that trilogy every couple of years since I stumbled across "The Spirit Of The Border" when I was not yet a Teenager, fell in love with it and scrambled around looking for the other two, and in a late 1950s, early 1960s small Farming community, where the nearest Library was 20 miles away, that was no Mean Feat. The essential characters in the trilogy are Betty Zane, her 3 Brothers and a Woodsman named Lewis Wetzel. The Zanes were real people and Ancestors of Zane Grey. Lew Wetzel was also Very Real, and there is quite a bit of historical info about Wetzel, and his almost Lifelong pursuit of War against Any And All Indians he came across. Quite a lot of History and more than little Fiction is available about Wetzel and his deeds is readily available. If you also like Historical Non Fiction, there is a book called "That Dark And Bloody River" written by Allen W. Eckert, published in 1996. The reason I mention and Highly Recommend this book is that it tells the True and accurate history of the characters Grey writes about in his first 3 books, and that non fiction book is, just as exciting, if not more(It is more exciting to me anyway) of an exciting read, partly because the places, the people and their stories of taming(sometimes not a good thing, but one that had to be done, else we'd all be living on the Eastern Coast of the continent, which would be a bit Crowded after a couple of Centuries has passed) the Wilderness, and making it livable without being in a constant state of War.
I apologize for Going On So Long, but I'm a serious Bibliophile, and at almost 73, I can take the time to pursue my passion for the written word, and we seem to be of similar taste at least where "western Books" are concerned, and I like turning people on to books that I really enjoy....If you've not read Zane Grey, you'll find his books a bit trite, and written in an almost Victorian style, but Thoroughly Enjoyable, nonetheless.
Okay I'm Done Pontificating, so Enjoy, Read On and Be Well

Blood Meridian made my skin crawl. There's something about a Cormac McCarthy book that makes me want to take a prozac and shower in bleach every time I finish one. Lonesome Dove was incredible. It's in my top 5 best books. What a tale! You know who else spins a good Western yarn? Our very own Beaver Eatin' Josh.

I agree! Lonesome Dove best of all! After that, I got into all of Louis L'Amour western series. Then William W. Johnstone has a ton of great books! Smoke Jensen and Preacher I discovered later in life. Yep you summed it up great he has the same old formula time after time! And now I've got another author to try out that you mentioned! I've really enjoyed your channel since recently finding it! I'm glad I did!

Excellent list of western authors. My grandfather (an actual cowboy, born in Idaho in 1889) read everything Zane Grey ever wrote. He loved all those stories written about & around the Klamath. One of my favorite wild west non-fiction writers is Elliott West. I never fail to learn something new from reading or talking with him. An absolute wealth of knowledge and great, weird, quirky little stories about the west. I would have loved getting him & my grandfather together. Someone that studies & writes about it, meeting someone that actually done it. Oh My !!

@Wild West Extravaganza (I know that probably doesn't do anything, but you never know hehe) William W. Johnstone, as you describe his works (and I don't at all mean the following to be critical of your description etc), sounds like he's almost writing western James Bond stories in terms of how you describe the protagonist-s. hehe :-)
I haven't read a ton of western related fiction (I'm, sadly or not, more of a non-fiction nut when it comes to my preferences) but have read some Zane Grey and it was always good and he and Louis L'Amour were favorites of my late uncle who read widely in terms western fiction.
Love your content sir and *always* look forward to the next installment - were I financially able I would definitely throw some support you way, and maybe in the future I'll be able to. In the meantime though, keep up the awesome work man!
