  • Played as a tribute to the memory of Late Shri Satyen Mishra, a connoisseur of Hindustani Classical Music at a function organised in the afternoon of 22nd October 2017 at Hawthorn Arts Centre.
Brindavani (Brindabani) Sarang is popular with vocalists but not heard as much on instruments. A well known member of the Sarang family of afternoon ragas(other variants include Madhmad Sarang, Shuddha Sarang, Gaud Sarang), the origins lie in the ancient raga Sarang from the Vedic period. Due to the Dhrupad background, it is a bold raga sans the fine toned embellisments that characterise some of the newer ragas of the Indian musical pantheon.
Brindavani Sarang both Nishads (Ni) and this has to be carefully handled, otherwise the raga can become indistinguishable from other ragas
After a brief introduction I play a middle tempo 10 beat composition (Jhaptaal Madhyalaya) which came about after a discussion with Ustad Shahid Parvez who advised me to keep the sam (point of emphasis, first note) at the Vadi (most used note- Re) of the raga.
Then I follow with 2 compositions in fast 16 beat time cycle (Drut Teentaal) - the first one adapted from Shahjahanpur gharana and the second one from the famous vocal composition Jaoo me tope balhari, sung by most vocalists.
