Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you just put in "in ground" garden soil. It's meant to be mixed in with existing soil for in ground planting. Basically, you just put a partially broken down mulch in your beds, which has no nutrients. You need planting mix or raised bed soil in your raised beds. They have different needs. Trust me, I made the same mistake - once. Mix in some good quality compost & you'll have a better growing medium.
Good news - Putting the cardboard on the bottom was a good idea. It will deter weeds somewhat, but earthworms love it & you'll start seeing them in your beds & they'll help break down that in ground soil.
You can probably find a local place that sells compost by the cubic yard. It's about $45 in my area. It's the best thing to use to top off all of your beds. You'll see a big difference.

Rox, 2 things. The bags you added need more soil, add a couple bags of miracle grow potting soil to those new flower beds. It will enhance the growing. Also to keep cats out of the garden give them a spot with sand. Then show it to them. They will go use it like a litter box instead of your garden beds

Nope you need to fill the beds up more ...soon as the rain comes or you water it's going to pack down more ...add some perlite and moss and that will help....also if you filled the first few inches with leaves it will help too ...cardboard on the bottom helps keep the weeds out...also if you have gophers and you put the same stuff that you built the rabbit cages with the wire on the bottom and then cardboard it helps stop gophers

Everything you do is with care and your place is so neat and clean. You are fabulous stewards of your animals and of your land. I applaud all your efforts. Your rabbits, chickens, dogs all have excellent care and are in the shaded parts of your place. Shade in the summer, leaves are gone in the winter, and they have some sun. American made all the way!

I know you have a compost area, why are you not using some of it for the flower beds along with the soil Rox is putting there? Peat moss is also a great addition to the raised beds as it tends to keep the soil loose. In my raised beds I use Black Cow from Lowe's. Rox, the bed is lined with metal, the soil is going anywhere.

Anthony, to keep the cats out of the flower beds, maybe build removable frames the size of the bed with a brace in the middle, and put the same screening on it as you used on the fence. Rox could remove them when she’s working in the flower beds, and set them back on top when she’s finished to keep the cats out.
I love what the two of you have done with the garden. The next thing you should do is put some of the landscaping screening around your beds like Mel and Gary did theirs, to keep the weeds down, and eliminate the need for weed wacking around the beds. Lord knows you are going to have your hands full just taking care of the fruits and vegetables you are growing.
I’m wishing you both a huge beautiful garden to feed and nourish your family.🍉🍇🍓🫐🍈🍅🍆🫛🥦🥬🥒🌶️🫑🌽🥕🧄🧅🥔🍠

Hi Ant, just watching the screwing of the gate frame and thought; both you and Gary need to have a collection of clamps to help with your constructions. Sash clamps, sliding f clamps of a few sizes. They are a great asset for getting work held while you drill and screw. They are like having extra hands when you need. Once you start using them you start rethinking how you work to make it easier. You nearly need a bunny cam so you don’t disturb them too much. They are looking good aren’t they. G’day Rox.

Hi Guys. That is a lovely gate you made for the garden, but surely you dont expect it to keep out the animals, especially the cats., who are prolific climbers/jumpers. I can envisage quite clearly the cats jumping over that gate and using the garden as its personal toilet. As they will with the front flower boxes. Hope I'm wrong. I have to say though that you have done a wonderful job with the entire fence and not forgetting the dog area as well. Looking forward to seeing your garden grow this year, good luck.

Worked great. Works great with veggies too. No problem with watering! The water goes right through the weed cloth! Love the baby bunny clips.
