Beautiful! I used to be the songleader at the Navy Chapel onboard Pensacola NAS. We ended every service with this song. It still brings me to tears to hear or sing it. I just remember looking out on the faces of retirees and young sailors, Marines, and pilots who attended our church service. Made the verses much more significant.
Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep,
O hear us when we cry to thee
For those in peril on the sea!
O Christ, the Lord of hill and plain
O'er which our traffic runs amain,
by mountain pass or valley low,
Wherever Lord thy brethren go;
Protect them by Thy guardian hand
From every peril on the land.
O Spirit, Whom the Father send
To spread abroad the Firmament;
O wind of heaven, by Thy Might,
Save all who dare the eagle's flight;
And keep them by Thy watchful care
From every peril in the air.
O Trinity of love and power!
Our brethren shield in danger's hour;
From rock and tempest, fire and foe,
Protect them wheresoe'er they go;
Thus evermore shall rise to Thee,
Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.
The words 'Written in 1860 by William Whiting' are misleading at best. In this version, the second and third verses of the original, which had been about the sea, have been replaced by verses that refer to the land and the air. The new verses date from about 1940. (Thus, the congregation in _Titanic_ were singing words that hadn't been written yet.) The original words of the second and third verses were:
O Christ, Whose voice the waters heard
And hushed their raging at Thy word,
Who walkedst on the foaming deep,
And calm amidst its rage didst sleep;
O hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea.
Most Holy Spirit, Who didst brood
Upon the chaos dark and rude,
And bid its angry tumult cease,
And give, for wild confusion, peace;
O hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!
Thank you so much for transcribing the words. Saved me a ton of work. I used t hear this hymn in many military chapels as a child and adult.
So glad they sang all verses. Just a spectacular hymn, particularly for anyone who has served in the armed forces.
Son and grandson of three USAF veterans here. Respect to all branches
We sang this hymn every Sunday at chapel when I was at Navy Basic Training San Diego in '84. Still takes me back with tears in my eyes. 😇🇺🇲
@@guybozeman6388it used to do that when I was overseas, in chapel, as a n 8 yo. Still does at times too.
Semper Fi.
I have no words other than _thank you._
Wow praise Christ alone.... Watching from Africa mother Zambia
Glorious hymn; gloriously sung. Isn’t God so glorious to have made us with the ability to make such rich harmony just with voices. We are natural wind instruments. I so wish I could sing there amongst the bass voices.
Totally agree and I just wish that I could sing w/o making babies cry, dogs bark and people running away!
You had me until you got to the god stuff.
@@Morpheus903 So where did we get the ability to sing with such amazing voices then?
So grateful to find traditional renditions of our most sacred hymns. Been trying to find something like this for decades. Praise God.
The Tabernacle Choir holds public rehearsals at Temple Square in Salt Lake on Thursday nights. I was there for a conference…forgot the conference but the rehearsal was a jewel…
Beautiful! I like it even better on .75 speed.
I heard this after every mass at NTC Orlando..
I always enjoy hearing this at church or at funerals. I hope they sign this at mine.

US Marine's Verse:
Eternal Father, grant, we pray,
To all Marines, both night and day,
The courage, honor, strength, and skill
Their land to serve, thy law fulfill;
Be thou the shield forevermore
From every peril to the Corps.

[1]
Eterno Pai, com teu poder
As vagas sabes submeter;
O vasto oceano pões em paz,
E no seu leito antigo jaz.
A ti clamamos; vem guardar
Os que viajam sobre o mar!
[2]
Senhor, a tua voz soou,
E a tempestade se acalmou;
Sobre ondas tu pudeste vir,
E na tormenta em paz dormir.
A ti clamamos; vem guardar
Os que viajam sobre o mar!
[3]
Divino Espírito, por ti
O abismo encerra vida em si;
A negra confusão passou,
E o caos em ordem se mudou.
A ti clamamos; vem guardar
Os que viajam sobre o mar!
[4]
Ó trino Deus, tem compaixão
Dos que em perigos hoje estão!
Com vigilância paternal,
Dissipa o medo, afasta o mal!
Assim, por todos, sem cessar,
Serás louvado em terra e mar.

Today, 112 years ago, on April 15th 1912, the Titanic sunk taking 1,517, passengers down to the bottom of the North Atlantic with her; they sang this the night they hit the iceberg, not knowing this hymn would become their own. May they rest in peace.
Nice
Thy sea, O God, so great,
My boat so small.
It cannot be that any happy fate
Will me befall
Save as Thy goodness opens paths for me
Through the consuming vastness of the sea.
Thy winds, O God, so strong,
So slight my sail.
How could I curb and bit them on the long
And saltry trail,
Unless Thy love were mightier than the wrath
Of all the tempests that beset my path?
Thy world, O God, so fierce,
And I so frail.
Yet, though its arrows threaten oft to pierce
My fragile mail,
Cities of refuge rise where dangers cease,
Sweet silences abound, and all is peace.

Thank you for this. I've not been saved. I was I think either Christened or Baptised, as a baby, and my name is Michael, so i am perhaps in with a chance. And I really like the Ave Maria so if anyone thinks it's worth a go, please get in touch!
You can always choose to be baptized as a believing adult. ❤️
Yes indeed. I've not had the desire though. Thanks for your reply.
Love this group but it would be great if we could have the lyrics displayed for those of us with partial hearing
Thanks for that, I really appreciate it. It would be much easier for me though, if the lyrics appeared on the screen as they were singing each song as there are a good number to listen to, but difficult for such as me to make out all the words and I would love to sing along and worship with them.
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🇧🇷
This hymn is absolutely best when sung. When herd instrumentality, it just seems to lack the human emotional spirit.
Great intonation and balance, HOWEVER...PLEASE slow it down and show some due reverence. The beauty of this song should not be rushed
This is the US Navy Hymn.
Adopted as the US Navy hymn, otherwise it is a regular Christian church hymn written by Reverend William Whiting and Reverend John B. Dykes in circa 1860/61.
👍👍👍👍👌👌👌👌👍👌👍👌
😊
Beautiful, but why did they change the words?
Alguien lo puede traducir en Español 😅
