i believe pbr and how AAA has been doing graphics is the highest reason why everything looks like shit or too stupidly heavy nowdays.
last well optmized game i played was Control (literally on launch) and cyberpunk after years of updates.
rift apart on pc is such a dog shit port that FORCES you to have 8gb of video ram oooooorrr THE FUCKING FPS GETS CUT IN HALF AND GOES EVEN LOWER THE LONGER YOU PLAY...... WHY?
didn't that shit costed over 200k to be made? why the fuck they always half ass the pc ports???? is everything out sourced to fucking oblivion in pc game dev?
my favorite graphic style ive ever seen in a game is mirrors's edge catalyst, kane and lynch 2 and Blur. all of them uses baked af lightning but each does it so stupidly well stylized its not even funny how good they look. SPECIALLY BLUR i still cant believe how gamey and realistic at the same time that game looks while running on a literal toaster.
then you have nowdays car games that besides need for speed needs a fucking war machine to run.... why? even need was better before by how much more they experimented with the artstyle so why this happened with the industry????
and something id like you to see is games in dev hell when you have the chance, specially crap like ff13, 15, Forspoken and granblue relink.
all of them took well over 7 years to make but the actual release build was made in the last 2 years of development and all of them are indeed made by japaneses which makes me wonder more why american made shit is always worse when its released regardless of the platform.
like 15 apparently shouldve have had another year of development to be 3 years for a open world, but its a miracle they got THAT amount of work done in just 2 years. then forspoken was crapped on due to a dev team without direction (like anthem) and got rebooted not once but TWICE in its 7 years development time just for the final product to be an amalgamation of good and bad ideas with some cutting edge tech engine that now square half scrapped it (half because they actually forked that shit for the second time to make ff16 they just say it isn't but everyone knows its the same engine lol) and like what really goes wrong with those games to always be rushed while still having 7 fucking years of development?
do me a favor, see the Credits Sequence for both ff15 and Granblue Relink both games have an ARMY of out sources, ff15 has over 50 while relink has over 120 (i literally counted) which is just fucking insane, relink also got remade from the ground up after 3 years in production because of platinum dog shit engine not having good graphics with good performance or it was one or the other lmao.
