you very neat and tidy hand stitching there! I read an old sailing book, where they order a new sail, machine sewn, but the sailmaker decides to hand sew it for no extra cost because they thought it needed to be stronger to make it back the other half way around the world. That was the '50s, I don't think anyone would offer to hand sew now but that doesn't mean it's not stronger, especially if it's as neat as you are doing it!
I really like the auto pilot trick! Have I said that before? I have to try that. Bummer about the sails. Surprised the Sailrite isn't working but when in doubt get the speedy sticher out.

Your sail right machine most likely needs to be professionally serviced. Once the internal component alignment gets off, they will constantly bind the thread.
Hi, This is Eric from Sailrite. I noticed in your video at 7:20 minutes that your needle is in backwards (it will not work with the needle installed incorrectly). The "scarf" must be facing to the left, not the right. Try that and it should work better.
Hi Eric, thank you so much for commenting here. Apologize for late response as I’m alone with absolutely everything. My days just don’t have enough hours. I guess my point about Sailrite somehow disappeared during my editing or my English is just not good enough making it coming out wrong. The mistake thread needle photo was done on purpose, as illustration of my point. I have StarLink onboard and watched so many trouble shooting videos on Sailrite that’s actually really good. However my point was as poorly it might have been communicated, having a Sailrite onboard might be overrated. Not because the machine is not good, but if not used enough and frequently it’s quite a challenge to actually take the advantage of having one onboard. It’s so many parameters and options that has to be correct. Otherwise it will just be a mess. This was my point and apologize if this video upset you. This was definitely not my intentions. I’m sure it works perfectly for those using it a lot. But for a sailor bringing one onboard only for emergency like me, most likely will end up stitching by hand. All the best
Hi, Thomas! Your work on the sail looks fantastic! I’d love to learn more about the tools used for sail repair and techniques for how to repair sails. I love to sew, but I’ve never worked on sails before. I’m assuming the tools will depend up on the kind of sail material used, its thickness, etc to determine what size/kind of needle to use as well as thread - so much to learn! The island and people are absolutely lovely! How cool to make new Indonesian sailor friends, too! That sure is a big cat - a Lagoon, right? Gorgeous boat! Stay safe and fair winds!
Thank you so much Chelle 🙏🏻 Most of all it’s ridiculous time consuming. You need UV safe threads, and needles that’s strong. Depending on layers etc you also need a tool to pre make the holes for the needle. Lots of work⛵️

The thread is going threw the the wrong way. it should go into the needle on the opposite side of the needle that has a curved side for the bobbin to go threw. Also check bobbin for any burs on point of bobbin.
my hunch is that problem you are having with the sewing machine looks to me like the thread is becoming twisted. if the roll of thread is stationary and is just pulled off each loop becomes a twist and that seems to make more friction as it passes through the eye of the needle, which can result in snags or wearing out the thread and snapping. I've had problems like that and had better results with the roll on the pin on top of the machine so that it rotates as the thread pulls out, preventing extra twist in the thread.

Sailrites are sposed to be good,no doubt someone will offer the solution to your thread problems shortly after you have hand stitched your repairs-thanks for showing this too!!

With the hydraulic it’s not much power. This is much more efficient than an electric drive. And normally you don’t need it to run that long at anchor. But this is the same thats running 24/7 when sailing, mostly on course instead of wind
Can you explain what your heading assistant is please Thomas? The auto pilot moves your rudder, do you need the engine on to get water over the rudder? I dont understand how it turns the boat?
Thanks for all the content and videos. Have been following for a while. Remember how much excitement and anticipation you had about getting to the pacific and sailing there, but seems all your videos since have been filled with terrible weather issues, immigration office drama, problems in general, and not much of any true beautiful enjoyment like when you were in the caribbean. Coincidence or bad run of luck? Don't know, but just from the visual it doesn't seem the pacific you've been to at least is that awesome as I see on a computer screen from home (yes, sarcasm)..........

Not sure if you will read this Thomas, but i switched out my needle for one with a larger hole and now my machine is working great! I was having the same problem you were having here with the thread bunching up. Hope it helps
It’s lots of good things to be said about the Sailrite. However what most people don’t tell you is what I just shared. Sometimes it takes like forever to have all the things right.
I’m fine with my Bernina so far. She can force herself through 14 layers of denim cloth without much effort. I’m happy with that so far. For sails - a different world.
You have the worst rig for down wind sailing, which is the route square riggers took for centuries. You could have a simple lug/junk rig and what you save on sails, would more than pay for any motoring you would have to do. You should be able to get at least a circumnavigation out of a $9k sail, clearly they are not made like they used to be. I used to enjoy hand stitching cloth, but more than two layers, rope and wire are a pain with arthritic fingers. More power to your hands!

Well he also broke up with his girlfriend in the Pacific and that couldn’t have helped.

80 lbs bag of concrete with rebar will do the job until they can buy a new anchor.
