You read these in a conversational way.. Not just through the character's conversing. but as though you are conversing with the listener.. It's an amazing gift you have, thank you for allowing us to share in it
Wow! No one ever put it like that. I think it’s a great compliment. I loved being read to by my mother, and at school by Mrs Umpleby (yes she was really called that) and then I read to my girls in turn doing ‘all the voices’
Great story and narration. I always like listening to this one. I read it years ago and always come back to it.
I like your touch to this amazing story!
Charles Dickens always does it for me. I wish I could write that well!
Thanks!
Aside from the Christmas Carol's, had no idea Dickens wrote chilling ghost stories.
Thanks, Tony, I remember this very well want to hear you tell it again. You are the best storyteller! Well after my grandmother.
I listened to your reading of the story (very good btw) and watched the 70s tv version. The plot could be a sophisticated Doctor Who story as well, the visitor would be the Doctor. The story contains only one way out of the foreshadowed death. The signal man's death could have been avoided entirely if only he had taken the providential visitor's advice (the Doctor's advice) to attend strictly to the smallest details of his duty rather than to the apparition. The tv version shows the signal man totally spell-bound by the apparition, made deaf and dumb to all signals intended to draw his attention from the apparition. The visitor, like every visit by the Doctor, is ex nihilo -- no explanation as to the purpose of his visit except to be "called" upon. This interpretation is a stretch but it was fun inventing it.
You told the story in your own unique style which is very effective and leaves your listeners wanting to hear it again and again.
Excellent presentation
Thanks so much
Very nicely narrated: your reading tempo and intonation capture the reflective tone of this minor Dickens masterpiece. Thank you for another great performance.
Really enjoying listening to these stories, both your own and the classics, so much so that I bought your audiobook, Cumbrian Ghost Stories on Audible.... Looking forward to next week's story, thanks for uploading....😁 (Bought you a coffee as a little thankyou..)😁
Another great story! Agree with the earlier comment - hardest working man on UA-cam.
You know I adore a good ghost story. Dickens seemed to be the "go to" for something that would compel the reader long after the book is closed.
Fantastic reading, as always! I don't know if you ever heard it but there was an old radio play "Beyond Midnight" that did an adaptation of this story. If you ever get a moment I highly suggest listening to it. Just as fun as yours! ^_^
Always such a pleasure! 😊
One of my favorites, Tony, enhanced by your vivid, expressive narration. Thank you!!!
as a ghost story is very underated , there is lots of great scenes , but the one that really stands out for me is the one? where they both look into the fire coal grate, thats when the story really unfolds for me.
Love this one.
What a spectacular story, and so beautifully told! I'll have to keep my eye on this Dickens fellow. He might have a notable career... 😉
Very good story and one that I wasn't familiar with. The signal man had a premonition of his own death. Now that is a haunting concept.
And he’s a signal man so he was getting signals from the otherworld too !
Poor signalman with this burden but the real life lesson is to make sure to send out the messages of risk and danger and not be too concerned with own interests and amusement.
Amazing job Tony but you new that already 😂😂😂
i have a dvd copied from the bbc back in time on tv bbc 4 xmas 2007. i so make sure the dvd recording is so protected in it case. i watch it at least 6 times a year because its so very brillient.
I have a copy of that as well, as well as A Warning To The Curious. The BBC always did a ghost story on Christmas Eve, when they made quality programs instead of the mass trash that all tv channels broadcast, it is supposed to pass for enjoyment I suppose. I’ll stick to the old shows.
well---damn! I was really looking forward to whatever commentary you were going to make after the story, but this is one of the ones you let stand alone. poop. Enjoyed the story though! Never heard of this one before and I have read quite a bit of Dickens. Thank you!
"...I came in and sat down, partly to collect my thoughts, partly because it had turned me faint. When I went to the door again, daylight was above me, and the ghost was gone...He touched me on the arm with his forefinger twice or thrice, giving a ghastly nod each time..."
Veiling, always veiling. I wonder at scrims and tapestry curtains. I wonder at what shades the eyes but pierces the soul, that failing of perceptions, that longing for resolution that never comes, even when it does.🧐
Where does that line, "everybody dies" come from?
Jonathan from the Heartwood Institute tells me it comes from the movie Psychomania

The Signalman is perhaps Dickens's best classic ghost story (not counting the Christmas ghost stories). If you like a Victorian story why not listen to The Phantom Coach? ua-cam.com/video/7BisUmOx4cY/v-deo.html
