- Judith Debruyn is a french artist, painter and stained glass maker of Douai, France, who have been working in more than 50 churches in Europe and often travel to China for diffeent kind of art residencies in www.laplantation.cn.
She have made exhibitions in many museums and galleries in europe and China and now develloping a partnership with chinese artists in Beijing and France.

Safety glasses while cutting and breaking glass! Stretch your lead first before building your window. Extruded lead is compressed during the manufacturing process. Tends to expand over time if not stretched. Vent the kiln..... Beautiful work!

Nice video. Couple of comments......the painting on glass is really nice to see, not a lot of people do that these days. The glass cutting is ok, but not great, the cuts in this window are not difficult. They should stretch their lead, takes out the kinks and give you a little more to work with. The lead joints are not very good, but should improve with experience. Why press the lead before the window is cemented? The soldering is not good, mostly because the joints are not good. A good 200 watt iron with a paragon tip will give you more control and better looking results. The lady who designed this is an artist, the others are craftsmen/women. Overall this is a good video showing lead technique, and the painting is a bonus.

Couldn't agree more with your comments about the lead. It didn't look stretched at all. And the face of the lead was bent and twisted. And the joints left alot to be desired and thats because the lead, like you said, wasn't stretched and I didn't see the glazier make any real effort to fix that problem. The lead looked sloppy starting with the lay in of the first border piece. And why press the came before it was cemented? That doesn't allow for a good fill. Overall. the piece is nice but the quality is lacking. I made church windows for 40 years and even if the final window was 50 feet up, I made sure that the details were squared away in the building process.

I just don't understand why you tear apart a nice video like this like backseat driver. So yes, you're trolling - arguably, only slightly. Just because you can be critical doesn't mean you should. Also, the youtube community is filled with artists who respond well to others and work with each other. You're not doing that either....I'm not a fan of people that put others down and I'll call them out on it, sorry. Be nice. Her work is beautiful (check out her website too!) and doesn't need you or anyone else being incredibly critical in "should have"s.

Does anybody know what is being used to cement and clean the glass? I've never seen cement that colour (unless it's the same as the usual recipe minus the lamp black) ... cleaning almost looked like woodchips or something similar. Very curious as to what it is since I'm used to cleaning with whiting.

Hello, In French we call this "mousseline". This is used to give material to the parts of the body.On the eyes, it should not be put to let the light pass.Once baked in an oven at 630 °, the product loses its white appearance but adds softness to the skin.

I have done stained glass for over 40 years and have never tapped on the glass to break a score line. That would make the edge splinter. I score edge to edge, grab the glass on each side of the score line with my thumbs on top and roll my hands down and out. Perfect clean break every time. I can cut 650 pieces of glass in an hour and a half with very little effort or mistakes. These people are wasting so much glass. Pretty piece but a hard way of getting it.
hello, you're right. You understood that it was a small explanation filmed for an exhibition presented in an art gallery. A popularization ... I work in the tradition as taught me by the Master glassmakers, Meilleur Ouvriers de France. The best ! For the rest, I like to take the time it takes to realize my artistic work. Why not? But it's not stained glass!!! you can look the exhibitions of the stained glass museum in Cursay sur Vonne, in France. You will see that in contemporary stained glass we add elements that can be wood, porcelain, steel ...

What medium of paint do you use to paint it and why do you bake it ? In a special kiln or the same as for pottery? What is the temperature and for how long?
It's glass frit they mix with water to apply it but when baked I'm kiln it melts onto the glass and becomes permanent. Why do you care the temperature and length if u clearly don't know what to do with it?
That was a legitimate question. Maybe Karolin is considering buying a kiln. Why be rude to someone thats new to the process? Just don't reply next time.

This step is mudding and it's awful. You take a puddy the consistency of peanut butter and cover your entire piece with it pressing it in between the lead came and glass then you apply whiting (it's a powder that caused the puddy to harden) and take a bristle brush and scrub your piece for what seems like a million years and your arm feels as though it will surely fall off. Then if your glass is textured in any way you lake a little stick and pry any puddy out of the texture of your entire piece. This process seals your piece and prevents movement of any of your glass pieces as the lead stretches over time. Like I said.... IT"S AWFUL!!
@@chrisbyrd6715 What's the benefit of came vs. foil? Strength? I've only worked with foil and haven't had a need to explore otherwise. This video is making me thing about that though
And applying cement or putty needs to be done on both sides of the panel to make it weatherproof but not waterproof.. After drying and then cleaning, the rebars if any, can then be added to the piece. Also, during the cleaning sawdust can or should be used to polish the lead or foil and final clean the glass. As far as strentgh, some glaziers, like myself, prefer lead and strentgh can be added by adding rebars if needed. Others say foil is stronger buy depending on the size, both mediums might need rebars. And what Chris said is true. Cementing is tedious and slow so you don't break anything. And if you have maybe 10 decent size panels it could take all day and its a killer.
There are two trains of thought on this. Lead is actually easier to work with than foil but after final soldering needs to be cemented. Unlike lead, foil is more tedious because of the usually small pieces. But, after soldering, foil with or without rebars just need a good cleaning. When I apprenticed 80% of the work was done in lead. So, over the years I mostly stuck with it. In 40 years, I did only 3 windows in foil. It depends on what material you learn on.

Really poor job of leading, never cut lead while glass is inside, never. And pounding the glass
to fit indicates the glass was not cut accurately and distorts the lead .
