      If I wasn't black I would watch clips like this to understand what is being said (so I could give a correct reply) but not to use it myself. We can be highly polarized in our perception of "black english": it can be viewed as an encroachment upon a circle that you don't fit into or a stereotype...either way can be problematic. Just be who you are & speak basic english.

    I'm from Los Angeles. I'd leave the cuz part out: here it is a gang affiliation. Crips use cuz, bloods use blood, and if the wrong person hears you use a rival affiliation term you could endanger yourself for real.

    This is terrific. I teach English on Zoom to students in Ukraine and I'm using this as an example of the variety of ways Americans express themselves. My students find it fascinating! One of them, a young woman of 24, told me she grew up listening to Hip Hop and 50Cent was her favorite. She didn't understand a single word of his rap! Today she's an expert English speaker and it was from her early curiosity in Hip Hop that she became interested in American culture. Thank you for the video and keep up the good work!

    Thank you man. I'm european and english is not my native language. There was a black guy talked to me in NYC subway and I didnt understand him nor even a word. Then he told to another black guy that he hate white people because white people hate him. I'm white so I was thinking and didnt know if he was talking about it because I was not able to talk with him. I felt sad because it wasnt about his race but the accent he spoke. Thats the reason why I'm here. To understand that man in case I will meet him again. And finally answer him his questions he asked me.

      I kiinda agree. If you live among and work with Black people then you want to know how to navigate - not replicate. These videos are excellent for helping people navigate. But advising someone to learn these things outside of being in authentic relationship with Black people/community actually is bad for everyone involved. If they are truly your community, they will teach and correct you with love. If they don’t know you like that, you might lose those relationships, lose business or get into an argument. Side note: is this how our language always gets co-opted? Do people work to get accepted into our community to learn things from us then sell it back to people out side of the community??? 😯

    "What's cracking" seems to be related to the Irish "What's the craic?" (the last word is pronounced exactly like "crack," and the phrase means something like "what's new?" or "what's happening?"). Makes sense, given how much influence Scots-Irish English has had on Black American English, itself a result of the close association and intermingling of black slaves and Scots-Irish indentured workers in the very old south, and of the two groups' daily contact in the less-old south.

      We have various accents here in the US. Please don't use any stereotypes to talk to us. Most of us use these sayings, but only with friends and not to our elders unless they've given us permission. And still, we don't say them with these attitudes. lol

    • @psicologiajoseh

      @@LilliLamour lol! You're so right. Though I guess that's common sense, which applies everywhere where humans interact.
      In my case, I just genuinely like the black American accent. Not just the slang. I also love how people like politicians, leaders, or preachers speak in formal settings. I swear, sometimes I'm moved to tears. And I figured that since there are actual courses on developing a British or Australian accent if you want to go to their respective countries, there could be some black American accent training if you want to go to the United States. I mean, that country belongs to the blacks as much as anyone else over there, isn't it?
      Though I guess is more complicated than that. I honestly hope that's not something offensive or anything on my part. Black American culture is really loved around the world. I guess the accent is just another aspect of that rich culture.
      Funnily enough, I once had some kind of the reverse experience of this. An American told me that he really wanted to learn spanish with a Colombian accent. Which, as a Colombian, made me feel really appreciated.

    • @EnglishBlackFriday
      @EnglishBlackFriday  2 місяці тому

      Well, there’s a history behind! This word should be avoided if you’re talking to anybody in America in English. Some people might get offended if you use that word so replace that word for guy or dude and you will be fine.

    How about the slang "what's good in the hood?" Is it another way of saying "what's up?" or is the speaker referring to the listeners neighborhood and asking them what's new or what interesting things are happening in the neighborhood or is it both?

    • @EnglishBlackFriday
      @EnglishBlackFriday  2 місяці тому

      @@EnglishBlackFriday so it has only one usage? So we can't also use it to mean what's happening in the neighborhood? cause "hood" here stands for neighborhood
