Loneliness is a universal language and the smiths spoke it more fluently than others.
miserably beaufiful. Could be worse, could have dated an axe-murderer!
This may be the best you tube comment I’ve seen in awhile. I had to google it to make sure it wasn’t plagiarized. My god that is great sentiment. You @angga are a wordsmith my friend.
You ever gotten used to being so lonely and then something good comes like a new love and you got to take your chances, it’ll either be great or you’ll just be shattered once again, depression is so bad. It’s so weird how you just want to feel nothing after a while because you’re emotions are out of control
Well said.
Angga El. Maestro
When i was 17 my uncle asked me what music i liked. I said ,"I like guitars that sing!" He said, " Ahhh...give the Smiths a whirl! " 30 years later every kind of band has come and gone but im still loving the Smiths as much as when i first heard them.
idky but thats beautiful
i can relate to this sm, i feel that their lyrics are just overall so beautiful
Same with me! They’ve been my favorite band for a long time
Thank's Uncle!!
A great gift 😊
"He said he'd cure your ills, but he didn't and he never will" applies to so much and I really feel that line ringing in the deepest corners of my past
Also the part of “she took away your troubles, oh but then again, she left pain” hits so deeply
maybe shouldn't have given yourself to a dickhead just because he's good looking or rich then
For me "the dream is gone, but the baby is real" is my part lol. I am raising my 14-year-old son by myself. His mom and I both love The Smiths, so it hurts even worse because of that fact lol. Every song on this album makes me happy and depressed severely, simultaneously lol.
❤
RIP Andy Rourke (January 17, 1964 - May 19, 2023), aged 59
You will be remembered as a legend.
Wow his birthday was a good friend of mine growing up that passed in a car accident back in 2000. Mine is the 6th of January and I always have enjoyed seeing those that are Team Capricorn lol. Andy’s baselines are legendary and he’s sorely missed, just as is my friend has been missed by me all these years. RIP to you both.

Every time I hear “the dream has gone, but the baby is real” it just hits me so hard. The feeling of snapping from a dream of a happy life to the harsh, sad reality, the realization that this is your life now… just incredible. The Smiths are genius storytellers as well as songwriters

Morrissey has this uncanny ability to sing like he's only singing to himself.
Thanks for this comment
There is a movie about The Smiths, it's called "England Is Mine".
It shows that Morrissey used to be really shy. He was staying at home most of the time.
@@jupitertheplanet2030 used to be?
Absolutely
He seems to play the role of narrator and "inner voice" at the same time in most of their songs. Even when he moans it's sometimes funny and is all part of that inner voice role he's playing, like how he does the inner voice of a childish person in "You've Got Everything Now". He's good at showing pettiness and weaknesses of the human condition.
I can't believe music this mature and knowledgeable was made by men in their early 20's. Way ahead of their time.
Men in their early 20s can be mature. So can you ! We all can !

This song calls to the souls of those who are grateful for the pain of living.
Nothig is left
Or a poet or a fool
Well put!

It also calls for those who are grateful there's an alternative.
Lyrics:
In a river the color of lead
Immerse the baby's head
Wrap her up in the News Of The World
Dump her on a doorstep, girl
This night has opened my eyes
And I will never sleep again
You kicked and cried like a bullied child
A grown man of twenty-five
Oh, he said he'd cure your ills
But he didn't and he never will
Oh, save your life
Because you've only got one
The dream has gone
But the baby is real
Oh, you did a good thing
She could have been a poet
Or, she could have been a fool
Oh, you did a bad thing
And I'm not happy
And I'm not sad
A shoeless child on a swing
Reminds you of your own again
She took away your troubles
Oh, but then again
She left pain
So, please save your life
Because you've only got one
The dream has gone
But the baby is real
Oh, you did a good thing
She could have been a poet
Or, she could have been a fool
Oh, you did a bad thing
And I'm not happy
And I'm not sad
Oh...
And I'm not happy
And I'm not sad
Oh...
And I'm not happy
And I'm not sad
i love people like you who do these comments
Wrong,
The first two lines:
In a river, the color of lead.
The masturbater's hand.
This song is painfully deep, enigmatic and addictive. I want to die to be reincarnated back in the 80's. I was 12 in 1990 but I wish I would have been in high school when this came out.

You can make this comment about 90% of their discography which just shows that rourke was a G
“She took away your troubles but then again left pain” really relatable
I sang this for my mom and she almost cried. My mother had been abused for much of her early life. She had an abortion when she was 23, a miscarriage at 25, and had me when she was 27. Many of her early boyfriends beat her and cheated on her. Luckily she's been happily married for the last 14 years and despite not being able to pursue a career in singing she couldnt be happier, but I can't help but feel this song was made for her.
tell your mom that we love her and she’s brings hope to people. I want to hug her
The triumph of the human spirit .... ur mom's a survivor.
My 19yo son sent this to me. I am abuse free since 2017, only at 40 I escaped all my abusers. No one knows all what happened over the years
Your mother is very strong, not only the fact of going through abuse and getting out of it, but also because of the mental torture that abortion entails, and keep living with it the rest of your life must be very hard, according to an INFOBAE article 80% of women never manage to overcome it.
Give him a hug from me :)
Mr.Buttram TMI.
"he kicked and cried like a bullied child, a grown man of 25. He said he'd cure your ills, but he didn't and he never will." This line captures the best type of patheticness you feel after you couldn't save what you promised you could.

After singing this song for so long, now at 25 it hits harder than ever.
i love the "distant" almost neutral narration in songs such as these, morrissesy's voice is ultimately tragic but its like his only telling a story, as it is. i don't know why but i think of nick drake everytime
He does say he's not happy or sad (neutral)

It's just something about those oh so ominous vocals and this general airy feeling. It feels so melancholic and depressing yet so extremely calm and accepting it's almost uncanny. This has to be one of my favorite songs ever. The lyrics "I'm not happy and I'm not sad" perfectly encapsulates that feeling.

Every time I'm going through a bad period in life, The Smiths are who I listen to and they help me through it. My favourite bassline from this band. Made me pick up the bass when i was 19. RIP
This is one of my fav bass lines of theirs too. The reason I came here.
It's heart-shattering and soul-stripping to become a new father at the age of 8 in a tiny beach community like Itanhaem, Brasil in 1968 where no orphanages or adoption agencies existed to speak of. We left our tiny, baby girl in front of a nice-looking home, ran away as fast as we could, and never looked back, not even once. The love of my young life disappeared into Brasil's vagueness never to be heard from again. No one knew her real name. Somewhere out there I have a beautiful daughter who is only 8 years younger than I am. I ran out of all tears a long time ago. Could I even bear to meet her now? I honestly don't know. Life's funny, isn't it?
My respects from Brazil.

I want to share my story:
A few months ago I was dating a girl, the most beautiful girl I had ever seen, we were not a couple yet, but she swore too much love to me and had an intensity in her affection, treating me like the best man she'd ever met, a few days ago I was listening to this song at night, she sent me a message confessing to me that she slept with another guy and that she hadn't even used protection, a boy I didn't know anything about, but from what I had seen on his social media he was a boy who abandoned her, I had the worst anxiety attack in years, Needless to say, I cut off all relationship with her that night.
