Thank you for this video! The escapement part you removed actually flew off my 1949 Silent because I forgot it has no tab stops, so I pressed tab out of habit and the carriage slammed mercilessly, literally kicking that part out. Fortunately, your video helped me figure out how the part fit and that nothing had been truly broken. I did have to replace the "return" spring on top. One thing I've discovered is that junked electric SMCs make for great parts machines. In fact, the mainspring on my Silent comes from a 210!

My escapement just started sticking in my 1956 Silent-Super, so I thought, “maybe Duane has a video on how to fix this...”. Low and behold!

Really enjoy your pragmatic approach to problem-solving. You essentially demystify what could be a daunting subject if not presented in such a forthright manner. Many thanks for your contribution to my new found interest and possible involvement from a monetary standpoint. Your videos are like attending a pleasant college lecture with substantial heft to it. Hi. I am trying to figure out how to reinstall the escapement that was jarred loose during shipping.
The part you are working on in this video seems to be similar, I have a super 12 Corona Smith. I don't know the year.
I'd VERY much appreciate your help, the parts are similar, however, I don't have as much room to work around within the type writer, I'm not sure how this became loose being the screws are very tightly in place.
I'd like to include photos of the materials if possible.
I basically don't understand what needs done to ensure that the carriage will stay out and go from left to right, instead of being stuck in the far right side.

I have a 1975 Galaxie 12 with an intermittent skip. Everything is moving well. Maybe the rocker is not rocking back fast enough on occasion? The pawl on the right is not sticking.

I have been finding worn escapement paws, very slight, most have been resolvable by removing and doing some precision dremel grinding

@@phoenixtypewriter2136 that seems likely, every so often it contacts a worn spot and slips past.

So... do you buy bronze and nylon brushes by the bushel? 😆 Seems like they are an indispensable tool for any kind of overhaul or repair. With all that gunk out (and that looked like a lot), I wonder if the original rubber sleeve would have worked.

Really nice video. I have one of these machines and it always good to see how you work on them.
Is it possible that a narrow piece of double stick tape would have helped hold your duct tape piece?
Good art supply stores can get the tape in very narrow widths.
I always find your videos, regardless of the machine, great to watch. Thank you.

Man, it takes real guts to take a thing like that out of a typewriter! I think I woulda put a dot of contact cement in that little black bracket to hold the duct-tape piece in.

Could I send you a video of what’s going on with my smith corona? I need professional help. I’m sorry if I’m bothering you

Escapements can be tricky, always good to know how they work, theory of operation, before any repair attempt.
I still sometimes need to do a side by side look at a working typewriter to fix a broken typewriter, sometimes . . . .
My web site is in the description, contact page has my direct email, rushjensen@aol.com
