CAN A BASIC CRAFTSMAN SNOWBLOWER FOR $100 BE A DRIVEWAY DOMINATOR? Can you buy a USED SNOWBLOWER for CHEAP, fix it up and turn it into something that gets the job done? Or potentially a snowblower that DOMINATES THE DRIVEWAY every time it snows? I bought this CRAFTSMAN SNOWBLOWER for $100 last summer. It needs a few REPAIRS here and there. Is this BASIC snowblower worth buying if you’re on a budget? LIKE & SUBSCRIBE!!!

"Keep the end greased up." That's what she said!
Also, that's a MAN'S snowblower! Who needs extra bells and whistles?! No headlight? Wear a headlamp (like for runners) on your head! Can't turn it? Get to the gym! (Plus, the tires will slide easier on snowy surfaces.) Electric start is a nice luxury, as is that locking drive lever. Looking forward to seeing this one get fixed up, JB!

Hahaha! I totally agree! A man’s snowblower! It’s a go out and get it done kinda machine! Builds muscle and character lol! Puts hair on your chest as my dad used to say! Plenty to do on this machine! Have an awesome weekend Mace!

I have this guy's slightly older big brother. I got a set of snowmobile dollies to assist moving it on dry pavement. I put the V-shaped rollers on either side of the scooper box, and lift the back onto the square roller. It isn't tied down to the dollies, so you have to be careful not to knock it off the back roller. It keeps the machine from sitting on the garage floor, and makes it so much easier to move the beast that is almost as big as I am.
You have taught me so much about my snowblower already, I look forward to seeing more about what you do with this one.

    I’m on my second snowblower.
My first was a Troybilt deluxe (not sure of the model as I sold it ten years ago). We got 39” of snow for Connecticut in one dump & it choked on that much snow. I upgraded to my current model. Cub Cadet Heavy Duty 32” cut 420cc top of the line 12 years ago. It runs like a top & really does a great job. My next door neighbor has a snowblower similar to that Craftsmen model in a Troybilt. Does it work? Yes, does it do the job? Yes, in more time. Mine will never see the use it was intended for which is just fine with me. Great video on a basic snowblower. For a $100? You can’t beat that! Great starter blower.

Yes, if you know what to look for. I just picked up a used machine yesterday for $10 ( 8 HP, 24" path) that had a good running motor but still needed some TLC. After further inspection, I noticed it jerked as it moved, telling me the rubber drive wheel was shot. After pulling off the belly pan, sur enough, the wheel was in fact chewed up. Lucky for me on this particular model, just the rubber on the wheel can be replaced instead of the whole wheel, which is cheaper. A few more able adjustments and some much needed lubrication (engine oil and differential lube change) The machine works like new. Can't wait till the snow flies again!!

Have the exact same machine, (not Craftsman, different brand - but they're all made by MTD).
Going on it's 8th winter now, aside from regular maintenance (basically oil, greasing, sparkplug...). I've only ever had to swap a pull cord, and 1 shear pin.
That's while using this machine in Canadian Winters, on a 40×80 driveway.
It's definitely undersized for my needs (but I got it for free originally so...)
I threw a light on ($50) and did the impeller kit ($30).
Now, I would say it's a great basic snowblower for people on a budget.
But I can't speak for the quality of newer models as mine is almost a decade old.

I have the same model number as well. I purchased it new. I forget exactly when. 2010 maybe? With the help of your videos, I’ve changed the oil, the spark plug and the belts the past year or so. Also applied oil and grease all over as well. I’m feeling your frustration with the turning. Can’t wait to see your videos on the impeller, gear box and whatever else you do with the snowblower. I have the exact same snowblower. I bought it in 2014 and it still looks new. That little snow blower will go through some snow though, unless it’s really wet snow. And yes it definitely doesn’t Ark out of the Shute. I am interested on that impeller you were putting on that on, hope you make a video on it. I just recently bought a much larger Ariens from one of your videos due to the fact I live on a corner and the darn plows will pack the snow at the end of my driveway. Other than that for what that Craftsman is , it’s a great snowblower and I still have it.

This sure does remind me of the $300 dollar Gardenway I got recently. It was in pretty rough shape when I first got it but now I can guarantee that it will be clearing some heavy snow this year. And the nice thing about it is the fact that it has the 10 horsepower Tecumseh engine, a working headlight, and no fancy cables that will break. Although it is lacking an auger lever lock, but that really isn’t too much of a big deal for me.

    Good stuff, JB.
We actually have just about that same exact unit at my work. Like you said, it’s about as basic as you can get, but it beats the hell out of shoveling.
I moved the drive disc on it so that gear 1F was about a 1/4” off center (very slow). That lets the reverse gears move farther out on the other side making them faster.
But, you already know this. Lol
Have a great weekend my brother! 👍🏻

My Craftsman 2 stage is 22 years old, I do the regular maintenance on it. I've had to change the friction disk drive a couple of times, a new coil and carb, other than those minor repairs, I'm very happy with it. @@GarageGear sharing is caring, bro! Mine does have joystick controls, so the tower for that complicates panel removal, but when I looked in the manual on how to clean the carbs, step one was literally “remove the chute.” I was like no sir! I also added a fuel filter and shutoff valve while I was doing surgery. We don’t get much snow on Long Island, but when a blizzard hits, I need it for the drifts. I’ve been using true fuel (no ethanol and stabilized) so I can go 2 years without running it and it still starts fine.

JB. When you empty the gas tank of your snow blower for the summer storage you are saying to just drain the fuel tank and your good to go. I though you had to add something to the tank and cycle through to keep the seals from drying out. Love your channel and love your new snow blower. Ottawa Ontario Canada

      @GarageGear  10 місяців тому

Hey Tom! Great question! There is only one $5 bowl seal on most carburetors today. And in most cases you could swap it out blindfolded. The bowl seal is squeezed between the carburetor body and the bowl. It’s the jets getting gummed up with bad gas that you need to be concerned about because they can be more troublesome to clean! Drain the gas out every season and if the bowl seal were to dry rot several years down the road swap it out. 👍thanks for being a cool fan!

This was a nice score for $100, congrats. One thing about these MTD's that makes me worry is that the speed selector cable can spend a lot of its life under tension, at 1 extreme of the selector range (I think when it's in 1F). If I had 1 of these, I would keep a spare of each cable on hand, in case one of them broke just when I needed to use the unit.

Hey Jay! That craftsman is in surprisingly good shape! Haven’t tried to pull the wheels! We’ll see how that goes! Let me know how she grips on the snow! Working all around the yard this weekend! How about you?

Hey JB. Doing what I can around the yard. The snow tires are awesome. Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5. Had the R3’s on the Telluride…excellent shoe tires. Had Taylor rental pick up the Troy-bilt and Ariens 722 single stage for tune up. I was very impressed with what’s included and cost. Talked to Mike who does all the work and sounds like a straight shooter. Got a pot roast in the oven and will watch the Bills game. Hopefully a better outcome than recent games. Have a blessed Thanksgiving my friend. Go Bills!

What is power thing you’re talking about? Also let’s grind the gears some, and say that the ground peg on the electric falls off for no reason …
