  • Let's teach our kids how to do CPR and how to use and AED at a very young age. They will remember it for life. I wanted to test my son's skills that he learned 3 months ago after providing him with a 15 minute lesson. This time, I decided to use a manikin with breaths, by Prestan. I chose this because women and people with breasts who suffer cardiac arrest outside of the hospital in public, are less likely to receive bystander CPR. According to a recent survey from the American Heart Association (AHA), women receive bystander CPR 39% of the time while men receive bystander CPR 45% of the time.
Survey results found that bystanders refrained from performing CPR in public for fear of inappropriate touching and/or hurting or causing injury to the person with breasts. There is also a misconception that women don't suffer from cardiac arrest and that breasts make CPR more challenging. As a result, men have a 23% higher survival rate than women!
We must create better training opportunities for the public to provide CPR on women and people with breasts. This requires manikins with breasts. This is just another gender-based inequality that has women surviving less than men. This gap is in plain sight and needs urgent attention.
Let's bring CPR awareness to all, no matter what age or gender.
