Todd I'm right there with you, the song is sugary, with ultra-simplistic lyrics and cliche'd rhyming. But the tune is so unbelievably catchy, the simple keyboard strings and the laptop beat actually make it somehow stick in your head like a worm. I'm a 20 year old male Metallica fan and I have to say this song is definitely a guilty pleasure, the melody is just so satisfying! Haha
I just can't understand why this song is so popular. Including with me. I love listening to it. I can rationally point out bad things about it, but that doesn't stop me dancing along every single damn time.
Same here. I usually love pop songs (even the dumb ones), but Call Me Maybe is just... the way everyone loves it seems to be just proof of how society's losing IQ points rapidly. It's hard for me to even type this because I LOATHE THIS SONG SO MUCH AND EVERYTHING IT STANDS FOR! The type of song that Call Me Maybe is except done well can be found through Kesha.
I don't have Tv and I don't look at any pop culture news or anything so I'm pretty in the dark about what's popular a lot of the time. I heard Call Me Maybe when it was really popular but I didn't even know it was as big as it was until way later. It just sounds like any other bland pop hit. Granted it's stupid in a pure almost christian kind of way and I find that pretty refreshing for a lame pop song. Usually bad pop songs are about clubbing or stupid material shit and that's way more bland than this.
For MLP it makes sense- poeple expected a lot less than what they were gonna get, it has that affect, plus the M6 are the PPG if done terribly, but CMM?...
I just said whats famous in the States is different from in Canada. And BTW the Guess Who is also bigger than Rush. You might have heard of a little song called American Women. Besides it also has the guy from Takin' Care of Business.
The only reason I can think of for this song getting so popular with people besides 13 year old girls is that, it's just so UNBELIEVABLY teeny pop that it almost sounds like a parody. It's like someone was challenged to write a lusty Taylor Swift song, or like someone jokingly said to their friend after hours of laughing at Radio Disney, "Hey, let's come up with our own awful song that we think would get on here!" It's more bubblegum-tastic than Big Time Rush or Victorious.
We had Gordon Lightfoot and Bare Naked Ladies Night in Canadian ldol because they are culturally significant. Also Canadian Idol winners have hits in Canada. Like Kaylan Porter., Low Level Flight etc. Jacob from Hedley was like 3rd place.
He's utterly right when he said critics are going crazy over it. Acclaimed Music ranked the most critically acclaimed songs of 2011, and Call Me Maybe ranks in the top ten. And to me, it looks MASSIVELY out of place compared to the others on this list (James Blake, Bon Iver, Radiohead, Fleet Foxes, so on), and it just baffles me why critics love it. Hell, barely any reviews I've read even mentions WHAT is good about the song, and just give a sob story about the day it won them over.
Ha, i think it's because Adam Lambert is awesome haha. I love Floyd and Metalica too (i never listened to that much Zeppelin if i'm honest), and Dio and Alice Cooper of course. I'm also getting into Gloryhammer a lot, and Alestorm
I think the 'crazy' part is justified. I, being a teenage girl, never give out my number to anyone I haven't known for at least a week or two. I guess for a lot of girls it isn't a big deal, and maybe it's just where I live and my lack of interest in dating to begin with. But for me, giving a guy my number after just meeting them WOULD be crazy. Oh, the scandal~!
I can't say as I see much connection between the two, actually, since the online fans of MLP:FIM are mostly adults, many of whom are male, not the teen girls who listen to this type of pop.
True. I despise people who say taht every song has to be a lyrical masterpice. Call Me Maybe is campy, stupid, but catchy as hell and fun. When i want to enjoy some real music i put on some classic or some epic movie score. Bach kicked ass without any lyrics.
She caused a huge fanbase to sprout out of 4chan, UA-cam, and 9gag. Making many people get annoyed when the show is referenced, AND HAVE RULE 34 TAKE OVER ANOTHER SUBJECT!
Todd doesn't really get Canadian idol, the musicians that are popular here won't necessarily chart in America. Like the Tragically Hip are the most famous Canadian band probably and they never have hits there. BTW Jacob Hogart (Headley guy shown playing the least Headley song ever) didn't win.
Here's what I think of this song: Beat: It's very good. Simple, catchy, and flexible. Nothing wrong here. Voice: Eh, it's OK. Not good, but not too bad. Lyrics: These are AWFUL. Abysmal, even. In fact, I'd even call them the WORST lyrics I've ever heard in my life. These lyrics RUIN the song for me, and the fact that Carly is PRETENDING to be a love-struck tween at 26 is simply aggravating. That's all I have to say about it.
Ok.... never compare call me maybe with one of the best cartoons in history EVER again.... the rest of your comment.... I agree.... Okay fine I understand the fact that 20 year old dudes watching a show for 7-10 year old girls strange.... What people usually dont understand is the fact it is an AWESOME SHOW!
Eh, the song artistically was bad, but damn was it catchy, and the violins were damn good. I'll admit that at it's height, this song was a guilty pleasure for me.
Yeah that's true (unfortunately I personally know a few). I'm not really sure why any of us have our girly guilty pleasures, and it's nothing to be ashamed of, but using it as an attention-seeking tool is just wrong.
was it me or did that intro of the song sound incredibly jerky and did he hit a wrong note or is that covered by other instruments in the song? 5:46 Ouch poor Lindsay. you know it probably doesnt say much that Im getting distracted by the song. "Woah Justin Bieber's canadian. Wooh Call Me Maybe, what was that about JB. For me I think this became a guilty pleasure because I heard it often and it wormed its way into my heart hes right she is cute. I do prefer her duet with Owl City albeit barely
*agrees with Todd about song up until he suggested Bronies are responsible for the phenomenon* Shut up Todd! Just because I like MLP does not mean I endorse this super girly shyte! XD
You know Todd I hate you for putting in the lyrics before it was just humming now I have to sing damn you. and DAMN YOU for bringing Taylor into this you... no I said I would reign in my mushy side just breathe and hit play. "Bucket" aw-*slaps cheek* NO no awwing no matter how sweet and innocent she sounded. 11:13 That would explain a lot
Yeah my opinion about the song is pretty much the same as yours, the song wasn't bad at first but the fandom is what made me hate it now I cringe everytime I hear Carly Ray Jenson's voice, it because of her that I no longer like the Owl city song "Good time"
"As a wise man once said there is nothing wrong with filling the world with silly love songs". great line Todd!
Todd I'm right there with you, the song is sugary, with ultra-simplistic lyrics and cliche'd rhyming. That girl was a student at my grade 7 school Clarence Samson before I even went there.
I Respect your choice Todd, and I find this song a gulity pleasure
I thought everybody hated Call Me Maybe?
wow this is a twilight song
I just can't understand why this song is so popular. Including with me. I love listening to it. I can rationally point out bad things about it, but that doesn't stop me dancing along every single damn time.
This is blocked in Canada due to copyright reasons
I'm watching this in Canada...
Finally! It got posted on UA-cam! Thank you!
for a guy who's always in the shadows, he can sure see the light
7:52 looks like Tommy Wiseau.
"American Idol doesn't have a very good track record"
Two words; KELLY CLARKSON. One of the very few pop stars I like.
5:15 Table of two, Todd.
Was this pre- or post-"To Boldy Flee"?
until now, i always thought she said ' all the other boys try and change me"
god no.. this is not the bronies fault... you can blame us for ponifying things but don't blame us for this songs over popularity todd >.>
Would probably bleach.
Jokes jokes jokes

The type of song that Call Me Maybe is except done well can be found through Kesha.
Todd...did you just reference MLP.....I...I Don't know how to feel about this...
You know, you can enjoy more than one genre of music
I don't have Tv and I don't look at any pop culture news or anything so I'm pretty in the dark about what's popular a lot of the time. The ending is kind of funny, with her finally giving the guy her number only for him to ignore it because he's into one of the dudes playing guitar
Don't worry todd, you're not alone on this one.
...Toddy, you were just asking for us to attack you with our Pony Legions, weren't you?
Did you expect an SJW to be smart with his gender analysis?.. #igivenofucks
I just said whats famous in the States is different from in Canada. And BTW the Guess Who is also bigger than Rush. You might have heard of a little song called American Women. Besides it also has the guy from Takin' Care of Business.

Heaven help me, I like this song but I can't figure of whyyyyy.
We had Gordon Lightfoot and Bare Naked Ladies Night in Canadian ldol because they are culturally significant. Also Canadian Idol winners have hits in Canada. Like Kaylan Porter., Low Level Flight etc. Jacob from Hedley was like 3rd place.

She does sound cute in this song. Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, I just want to give her a nice big hug. So yeah, he's wright about the cute thing.
*crying* I missed meeting him TT^TT
I'm sorry Todd, you are powerless in the face of this song. We all are.
I think the 'crazy' part is justified. I, being a teenage girl, never give out my number to anyone I haven't known for at least a week or two. 5:48 Paul McCartney Song for those who don't know
Todd has won the internet.
I had never even heard of this song until I saw this video.
Todd in the shadows just realized the internet has morphed into a little, preteen girl.
I can't say as I see much connection between the two, actually, since the online fans of MLP:FIM are mostly adults, many of whom are male, not the teen girls who listen to this type of pop.
I don't hate this song, I LOATHE this song to it's core!
It is her real name. I grew up around het.
Granted, she was popping his neck into place for him, but still. Also, she bawled out a freaking dragon once.
Love Todd's girl impression.
Well it does no harm. Letting it play in the background is fine to me.
well obviously not it's probably how she found out about him by watching the movie.... wait what am I saying nobody watched that movie
Who said Call Me Maybe is the "Avatar" of music, cause I'd like to ask that guy something. :)
True.
I despise people who say taht every song has to be a lyrical masterpice. Call Me Maybe is campy, stupid, but catchy as hell and fun.
When i want to enjoy some real music i put on some classic or some epic movie score.
Bach kicked ass without any lyrics.
seems like the best people to come from american idol are the ones that didn't win.
+nph53 And I hope "American Idol" is going to end soon. We're in the final season.
The song is a sensation solely for the chorus. It's just a meme that stuck and most people are just parroting it to seem cool.
I have a friend that hates all pop song. So I have to hear him bitch about songs like this. So it's nice to see some one give a pop song a chance.
She caused a huge fanbase to sprout out of 4chan, UA-cam, and 9gag. Making many people get annoyed when the show is referenced, AND HAVE RULE 34 TAKE OVER ANOTHER SUBJECT!
That's fine. I listen to a lot of Zeppelin, Floyd and Metallica, and for some reason I still really like Adam Lambert.
that poor, poor string section who had to play it. It has good parodies though.
yes carly you found every wourd that rhymes with maybe, there are onyl 4
If that show really shows snapping a bear's neck I am gonna report the show.
5:20 Make that a lonely table of 2
I'm a metal/screamo fan... and i like this song *ducks so people don't throw things at me* xx
No, she's 27. And this was uploaded last year so she was 26 then. He was right.
Didn't Todd himself once say he has a soft spot for girly teen pop in one of his Hannah Montana reviews?
You probably just don't know their name. They get insane amounts of Radio Play.
You are NOT alone in this, I'm not a huge fan of this song.
No doubt.
same with me
I have never heard of Tragically hip.. so they obviously aren't as famous as you are saying. (Canadian)
cool
Todd doesn't really get Canadian idol, the musicians that are popular here won't necessarily chart in America. Like the Tragically Hip are the most famous Canadian band probably and they never have hits there. BTW Jacob Hogart (Headley guy shown playing the least Headley song ever) didn't win.
What a great story, Mark.
To be honest, it's just those 17 words, you know the ones I'm talking about.
3. I have no use for this song either... -_-
Nothing*
In fairness, that twist at the end of the video where the guy turns out to be Gay will never not be funny to me.
apparently carly rae jepsen is fantasizing about a giant ball of gas in the center of the milky way
This song is like every Kanye West song ever: I can't stand the singing, but I love the song itself, so I just download the instrumental. :)
Or maybe Avril Lingraine Night!
Here's what I think of this song:
Beat: It's very good.

TODD HAS YAOI HANDS
Goddamn it, I hadn't realize it. This is Bella Swan's perfect song!
Well, this will help. She's 29.
lol this is the first time I have even heard of this song.
Yeah that's true (unfortunately I personally know a few). I'm not really sure why any of us have our girly guilty pleasures, and it's nothing to be ashamed of, but using it as an attention-seeking tool is just wrong.
I'm just waiting for them to rinse that damn car
what about rush? actually decent music
was it me or did that intro of the song sound incredibly jerky and did he hit a wrong note or is that covered by other instruments in the song? 5:46 Ouch poor Lindsay. you know it probably doesnt say much that Im getting distracted by the song. "Woah Justin Bieber's canadian. Wooh Call Me Maybe, what was that about JB. im with you
oh mY GOD HERE COME THE BROWNIES!
*agrees with Todd about song up until he suggested Bronies are responsible for the phenomenon* Shut up Todd! Just because I like MLP does not mean I endorse this super girly shyte! XD
It was a joke. Calm down.
rushfan2596
Well I had intended to make that comment in a joking sort of manner, didn't mean for it to be taken seriously.
JHaru777 You can never tell with UA-cam comments.
rushfan2596
Well the way I try to let on that I'm not really serious is by putting XD at the end. Cause it's like an emoticon and stuff.
Oh hii Todd!
One of my guilty pleasure songs, i'll admit. I have a small liking towards girly pop... IT'S A SICKNESS! xx
My theory: People like the violins.
It's likable 'cause it's catchy. But oddly worded!
Make room at the lonely table!
WOW! I HATE this song and I got really scared for a second. You are not alone Todd.
But MLP got nothing on Heyeyeyeyeah.
Well, someone had to say it.
Yeah my opinion about the song is pretty much the same as yours, the song wasn't bad at first but the fandom is what made me hate it now I cringe everytime I hear Carly Ray Jenson's voice, it because of her that I no longer like the Owl city song "Good time"
Didn't like this song until I heard MC Chris turn it into tasty face. How that's good pop music.
Uh, hello, RUSH is your biggest band .. ever
