We had the same grift in the UK with HS2. Phase 1, A high speed line from London to Birmingham 140 miles at a cost of £396 million a mile was started in 2017. Its still not completed and Phase 2 has been cancelled.
When they first started getting ready to build the California HSR, they enlisted the help of a major French train company, which was a great idea. They were experts in their field. Then they promptly ignored every bit of advice and decided to do the project "in house". The French company threw up their hands in disgust at how dysfunctional the California state government was and moved on to help an African country build a rail. Well, that rail line has long been completed in Africa, still can't ride anything in California and the master plan is laughably designed/routed. Adding insult to injury, a private company in Florida (Brightline) put in a modern rail line from Miami to Orland (235 miles) in four years.
I don't know what the terrain is like, but high speed rail needs much shallower grades and curves than roads, or slow rail. Tunnels and bridges are also very expensive. If there is a large amount of landscaping required, it could easily cause large blowouts in time and cost.
Government in action: 1) Remove train tracks from old rail lines. 2) Turn the old lines into bike paths. 3) Pay a king's ransome for new land upon which to build new light rail lines.

Just give me ONE example in the last 50 years where the government did any project better or equal to any project the private sector did. The last time the US Gov did anything within a budget of reality was the Apollo missions and the interstate highway system. And they were in the 1960's and 1950's. This government has done nothing but squandered taxpayers dollars for the last 50 years.
@@MrStark-up6fi I guess it depends on your criteria for "success." The interstate highway system had a secondary result: it helps move the population toward the rest of the country instead of being all crammed up in a few states. 3 hour drive that would be an hourish in the train. But you’d have to wait for the departure time. So plan ahead for 2-4 hours of wasted time so you can get where you need to be at the time you need to be there… of you could just leave a few minutes early by car to account for traffic.
@ how often do the trains run though and what happens if you miss you train or worse the last train home? I’d love the idea of being able to sit and read a book on my commute but I seriously question how much wasted time I’d have waiting that I could’ve spent at home. We have a Dart Rail near me. Years ago my brother tried taking it to work because of traffic and parking and the cost of it. The Dart Rail was cheaper. Drive was about 1.5 hours, train was about 40 minutes. Parking was closer and a safer walk. Dart Rail was a longer sketchier walk. He missed the train a few times right after leaving work on a normal day and had to wait over an hour for the next train. He got stuck working late one night, missed the last train and got to wait in a sketchy area for an hour before I could pick him up.
@@Enkid4675 I mean usually trains for regional services run like every 30 mins. High speed services (France to England or Germany) run every hour. It's really nice cuz the trains run from city centre to city centre. And even when we have to travel from the station, there's a good bus network
I live in the middle of that high speed rail line. No body here wants it. There's no reason to go from Merced to Bakersfield or any other stop between those locations. The Republican Mayors in the Central Valley will pretend they want HSR to be on Newscums good side and because the stations will bring temporary jobs, but they all know it's a terrible idea too.
There’s a high-speed rail line being built by a private company between Los Angeles and Las Vegas and another between Dallas and Houston. Watch as they get completed before the boondoggle does
Exactly! Being pro-rail is important for us conservatives, we just have to support mainline commuter and intercity rail, instead of HSR and urban bus/light rail/subway boondoggles.
CAHSR is a waste of money. It was wasteful from day 0. That money must go to mainline rail instead. Mainline rail is the standard profile of rail that supports commuter, intercity, and freight trains. So lets stop wasting money on CAHSR and urban transit boondoggles (buses, light rail, and subways), and invest in mainlines instead! I want to see more commuter rail service and Amtrak service, not another penny spent on the CAHSR boondoggle!
Mike, let me help you with this, we just moved to Florida from central California, exactly where that tiny stretch of HIGH SPEED rail is supposedly to be built. The only thing that has been built are some bridges and over passes, I have never seen anything tying them together
