Nice video. I made one paint marker, I used regular acrylic paint and airbrush medium. A year later and it’s still good. My be less expensive than the refills, can’t hurt to try it 😊
Thank you so much for sharing this Barbara, I guess the airbrush medium helps to thin it out and act as an extender - such a good idea! So glad it's worked for you too, I think I have a lot of experimenting in my future! 😄
This is helpful! I use Arrtx pens, but I work with wood that really needs to be primed with gesso first. I love the convenience of the pens, so I've gone down the rabbit hole about the bedt way to do this. Right now, I'm using a paint touchup pen.
I've watched Sandi Hester and other mixed media artists take a bright marker, pull the nib out and tone it down by adding in a few drops of another colour. For example Hookers Green can be a bit jarring so add some of your favourite yellow to it to make a different green. Saves having those non-favourite markers just going to waste.
Thank you Judy! The airbrush medium is a great shout to mix with acrylic paints. Acrylic inks have also been recommended in the comments as working well for refills too!
If someone compiled a database of color mix proportions, they would be hailed as a hero. I could imagine wasting a lot of paint getting the right ratios.
@ Pantone books cost hundreds of dollars so not practical for saving money. And the Pantone ratios are designed for transparent oil based inks as opposed to the more opaque acrylic inks we're discussing here.
My advice would be to study colour theory. I promise it makes colour mixing easy no matter the medium! 😊 I even use colour theory at work every day (hairstylist)
I think mixing some of the colours you want to make in the markers using just acrylic paint at first would help to see the colours/ratios needed, but agreed! A big database of colour mixes would be so so helpful 😄
Yup, love this Katie. I have the same cheap Amazon empty pens ready to go and now you’ve given me the push to just get on and fill them up with your lovely video :)
I bought some empty Molotow markers after seeing you mix your own previously but actually filled them with diluted liquid watercolour mixes. I was worried they wouldn't work or the nibs would go mouldy but I'm happy to report they seem to be fine 😅. Need to use them a lot more next year.
Thanks for this video Katie! Perfect timing for me. Do you think you can mix your own colours with normal acrylic paints if you mix them with enough water? 🤔 I have so many acrylics that I don’t use often and I’d like to make some markers with them.
So glad it was perfect timing for you Amber! I think these have an 'extender' in the which stops them from drying out so I'm not sure if just acrylic paint and water would work, but it's not something I've tested! A lot of other commenters also say that acrylic ink works in these if you have those!
I saw another commenter on this video say that they used airbrush medium to mix with their colours! (I watch both of you, so it's exciting to see you in this comment section Little Ammy Arts! 😊)
😅 A notebook with the amounts mixed has been vital for me. It saves me time when I want to remix, as I would never remember what and how much I mixed. I ❤ the greens you mixed. Thans for the tip about cheaper empty markers.
Thank you so much Berolina, I am super happy with the greens too 🤗 A notebook would definitely be a smarter choice and reduce the trial and error for me 🤣
Very interesting, Katie! Thank you for sharing the process. I look forward to trying it out. Perhaps soon since my husband reminded me I haven’t chosen what I’d like for Christmas hehe.
Great video! I’m intrigued and may try to mix my own. I have a bunch of pre-made ones that I don’t use much due to how bright they are, so the idea of toning them down a bit is very appealing!
Thank you sharing. Lots of empties sold on Temu, AliEx, or Amazon. Nibs, too. But wasn't sure exactly what to fill them with. They can be filled with inks or paints.
I used to love doing this, i was using Golden high Flow paint but the smell of them started to cause problems. Question, did you notice any smells from either of those brands you used?
I loved how your custom colors worked in your Patreon video, Katie. Did you know you can reuse empty Posca markers? I used Liquitex acrylic ink in a 2 mm Posca pen. My nib had a lot of dried ink in it, but I was able to revive the nib by soaking it in warm soapy water and scrubbing it with a toothbrush. I wish I invented this technique, but there's a video: ua-cam.com/video/4Uc5XFxyJ9U/v-deo.htmlsi=wkC-zFLMgsk8hSwm
Thank you so much, this is so helpful! I have a couple of older Poscas that are drying out so I'll have a go - thank you for sharing! Love that acrylic inks work too! Really appreciate the video link as well 🥰
I'd love to experiment with using ordinary diluted acrylic paint or fluid acrylics. I don't know if your refills contain an agent that impedes drying, so that would probably be a factor in whether or not nibs would clog. I do know that Lindsay Weirich has refilled Poscas with just diluted acrylics.
Yes I believe it contains an extender which helps, but a lot of other comments say that acrylic ink works as refills so I'm going to have to experiment! 😃
Hi everyone! Across all the brands (Liquitex, Molotow, Montana) I have a problem with the separation of the colours.. I can shake the markers very well, but the separation is also in the nibs. I always have to put so much colour down on trash paper until the colour of the marker is even again. It happens after only a day of storage, I storage them horizontally, it is soooo annoying. Has anyone a tipp for me? I thought about taking out the nibs everytime after use, but.... where to put them etc.? Its not with all the colours, but the mixed ones, the refills, and turquoise colours. (Liquitex Bright Aqua Green, Molotow Amazonas Light...)

So glad it's helpful, thank you for watching 😄 Oh yes I bet the pens help a lot for wood art! I know a lot of people use Poscas for that too!

That was cool, thank you, dear Katie, and a super happy New Year!
Thank you so very much, Selma! Happy new year to you too! 🧡
This is so helpful omg
I'm so glad it's useful!! Thanks for watching 😊
gonna try w/Amazonian empties & watered down acrylic paints & inks & airbrush medium... ty for another winning tip demo.
I suppose that Pantone color mixing guide might be the starting point for looking for pigments and proportions
@ Pantone books cost hundreds of dollars so not practical for saving money. And the Pantone ratios are designed for transparent oil based inks as opposed to the more opaque acrylic inks we're discussing here.

I have a book 1500 Color Mixing Recipes by William F. Powell

Yay! So glad to hear Jodie, looking forward to seeing what colours you mix!
thank you, great idea
Thanks Dina!

Ooooh that is good to know Emma!! I feel like I need to explore filling them with other mediums now!

@@KatieMoody Oooh I have lots of acrylic inks! Perhaps I will buy some of the empty markers and have an experiment ☺️ Thanks Katie!

Thanks for.showing this. Someone I saw recently used liquid acrylic ink (Daler Rowny FW) to make theirs, but I can't remember who it was!
It was Helen Cryer's latest! She just uses FW acrylic ink. 😊
Ooooh thank you! I'll have a look at Helen's video!
@KatieMoody Yes Daler Rowney has its own (pretty extensive) range of empty acrylic pens to fill with whatever acrylic ink mixes you want.
Very interesting, Katie! Thank you for sharing the process. I look forward to trying it out. Perhaps soon since my husband reminded me I haven’t chosen what I’d like for Christmas hehe.
Thanks so much Deven! Sounds like the perfect Christmas present idea 😄

Thanks Rachel! I really do wish they'd bring out a more muted/pastel range - I'd buy so many 🤣 but this is a good way to make it work for us at least!
This video was right on time I am so excited thank you!
So glad to hear it! Are you planning on mixing your own? 😄
@ I planned to try! I was hoping to add flow to my regular body acrylic that I never use
this is such a cool idea and I love the unique colours! I once tried to refill a posca myself and it clogged up ahaha 😂 happy christmas everyone 🥰
Ohhh no!! What did you use to fill it?
Thank you sharing.
Lots of empties sold on Temu, AliEx, or Amazon. Nibs, too. But wasn't sure exactly what to fill them with. They can be filled with inks or paints.
I’d be interested to see ink in them
@@Scrabbledat inks work really well in water brushes 👍
Lots of people suggesting acrylic inks so that could be an option to try! 🤗
Merry Christmas🎉🎉
Merry Christmas Sylvia! 🧡
I used to love doing this, i was using Golden high Flow paint but the smell of them started to cause problems. Question, did you notice any smells from either of those brands you used?
Oh that's interesting! No there's no smell at all from these!
@ thank you ☺️
You can also use any brand of acrylic ink to fill them.
I had no idea, thank you so much! I'll have to give that a try!

Which brand was the Amazonas green you mixed with white?
It's by Molotow! Such a great green! 😄
