    Been playing for years. Finally a band mate is making me learn this basic stuff that I'd been avoiding. This helped immensely (far more than he could). We communicate more clearly and easily now. Thank you!

    I absolutely agree that intervals are the most fundamental basis of learning from all Music theory. Everything for the most part derives from it in some shape or form. Great work!

    I never thought of mirroring the descending Intervalls, until now i just assumed the root note to be the lower octave. That’s a pretty simple and yet genius thought...! Thank you Mark

    Mark...many thanks! You have accelerated my learning of the Bass! I've always wanted to learn bass and never had the opportunity when I was younger. At almost 50 years old, I decided to go for it after learning of the online learning programs. I walked into a music store on the first of September 2019 knowing zero (not one note!) and somehow made a great lucky guess decision on a new Fender Jazz Bass. Through a series of google searches, I found you and have spent many hours at Talkingbass.net! All your lessons on learning the patterns and knowing the sound relationships has been extremely helpful. I've played drums since I was 9 and in churches since I was 13. The rhythm came quite naturally to learning the bass. I now play the bass full time in my church in the Houston, TX metro area and having a blast!!! I fully credit you for rapid learning! I'm going to be busy for years with all your stuff!

    I just started studying this yesterday and I’ve got to admit I have no clue at all!
    I’ll keep after it and probably refer back to this video many times. I’ll take your word for it that I’ll need this at some point.

    Brilliant lesson. Even the double sharp / flat stuff. Thanks.

    I once asked to get explained the Intervalls by a teacher, he was going to charge 80,- Euros for that and projected an overall of 2 or maybe 3 units. So 240,- in total. I am glad that I rejected and tried to learn it by myself. This 15 Minute Clip sums anything i learned so far up and even adds some stuff here and there.

    Hi Mark, I jumped on to your video as I started a few months ago considering ALL my notes as intervals. I recently found out I could actually connect two harmonies (E minor and G minor for instance) by using only G and E with D and B, their respective fifths. Using those four notes only allows me to build a nice ascending / descending pattern that connects the two harmonies. Thanks for that interesting subject, real food for thought.

    This is a great beginner lesson. I wasted lots of time in my early bass playing because no one ever explains intervals. As an experienced bass player now, I am glad to see someone doing this lesson and esp diving into the 9th and 11th concept etc. as well as the inversions _ Flea uses tons of them for anyone who loves RHCP

    I might be weird but I seem to understand the inversions easier for the first look at this wonderful lesson.

    Hi Mark. Thank you so much for the explanation!!
    The way I place my fingers on the neck is always the same, when I would like to play, let’s say a perfect 4th - one string below the root. Is this correct?

    How do I get my bass tone to sound like that?

  • @hestia165

    6:39 "Bb to C#"
    I tried to count it so many times to make sure, but I can''t help feeling that it's a minor third

    Hiya Mark. Can I ask how you get that really cool woody, punchy tone from your bass & setup please?

    • @talkingbasslessons
      @talkingbasslessons  5 років тому

      It's just the natural sound of me playing that bass. It's the direct signal, no effects, no amp, no cab. Remember a lot of tone comes from how you play and your hand placement. Also bear in mind it's an Enfield Lionheart. Very high quality bass with Sims Super Quad pickups.

    Does this work in drop tuning. Say drop c tuning?

  • @npchilds_music
    @npchilds_music 4 роки тому

    Worth pointing out that when you're calculating inverted intervals, the sum of the interval numbers/distances will always be 9, you only need to figure out the quality of the interval. Check that on pages 8-9 on the PDF.

    Woah. I thought I was fairly smart until I watched this. LoL. I'm 53 and trying to learn the bass for real. Meaning other than just playing by ear. I guess I need to start at the very beginning...where ever or what ever that is. Can you tell me where a person who has just picked up a bass for the very first time would start? TIA
