The diversity of the African diaspora never ceases to amaze me.
For those curious, the language at the beginning of the video is the Lucumí language, which developed primarily in Cuba and other parts of the Caribbean from the West African Yoruba language of Yoruba descendants taken there. It has other linguistic influences like Spanish, but also Bantu (Congo) remnants from Central African peoples the Yoruba people came into contact with.
Many of these tribes were enemies in Africa (and in Cuba these included the following peoples: Yoruba, Congo, Takua, Kissi, Calabari/Kalabari, Dahomey/Arará, and Mandinka) but in Cuba they had to unite to collectively survive slavery, so of course it was common for their influences to overlap. That is why the Lucumí language is not purely Yoruba (and it has since become primarily a liturgical language).

"I'm that Blackarican bruja straight up from the Yoruba
And my people come from Africa; diaspora Cuba
    And you mix that Arawak, that original people;
    I'm that Black Native American.
    I vanquish all evil.
I'm that Blackarican bruja straight up from the Yoruba
And my ancestors Nigerian; my grandmas was brujas
And I come from an island
    And it's called Puerto Rico
It's one of the smallest but it got the most people."

Its weird that some Black Women in the comments find the Video and concept of the video so "disturbing and scary" when this is OUR history, there is an essence of accepting Western and Eastern faiths but an actual faith and spiritual culture curated and practised by your ancestors is the thing you find foreign and unacceptable and hard to watch? Its not for everyone but dont let Westernized standards of Spirituality, religion, faith, "Witches" and African Arts allow you to disrespect/discredit a staple and forgotten beautiful part of Black female Power, magic, love, spirituality and history....What she (Princess Nokia) has brought to mainstream and what she is doing with this video is actually trying to show black women where we come from, and if we already knew, she is celebrating it, and removing the stigma of Black Females who are magical and divine and heavily spirited( we are not demonic, you can have positive witches, you can be very energetically sensitive and not be "evil)...You can't hashtag #blackgirlmagic then disrepect actual Black girls who are Magic, in every way. ~Know yourself. This video and the culture she is refrencing is heavy, it aint for everyone, everyone won't get it, but if you do, it is very resonating and powerful.

YenPanda 92 What you’re saying is so beautiful. I’m Wiccan and my faith is a little different but I have so much respect for the deep history and power of the Yoruban witches. We are all from the Mother but most have lost that connection and it’s sad that people have grown to fear it. Brightest blessings 🙏🏻

Yup. It's the Church did that shit. Keeps everyone so blind we can't see our Roots anymore. I dug into Wicca when I was a teenager because it was the main religion I could see that was Legitimately about celebrating the Love between People, Earth and God, but everyone around me treated it like I was getting into Cannibalism.
I'm like y'all this is your Heritage, where all of the Fairy Tales and Folk Wisdom comes from that have been treasured in the West for centuries...How can y'all be Scared of it? (white, btw)
The Church has packed peoples heads so full of bullshit and hearts so full of chaos that we, None Of Us, can see Our Own Roots.
(growing up in a devout Christian household leaves the same psychological Trauma-Markers (scars) as people get from growing up in an abusive household)
But all we can do is keep on Loving strong and loving the Truth, and they'll catch on when their spirit's are ready...
Of course, the more artists pushing shit out there like THIS track and THIS artist, the quicker their Spirit's are gonna be ready to get into The Flow
Blow Princess Nokia up in Every forum. Revolution requires its Bards!

    The intro in Yoruba:
    "Kaikaikai yemaya olodo.
    Kaikaikai assesu o lodo (x2)
La di oke, la di oke (x3)
Yemaya o lodo aua lodo mio" (x4)
    Translation:
"Take a look at it Yemaya.
    Take care of them.
    Get up, get up.
Yemaya you are not far from me"
Edit: Yemaya or Yemaja one of the Orishas (Afrikan Powers/deities).
Yemaya is the Goddess of the Ocean and creation. There are many Yemaya chants, several other languages. There's another similar one and it basically means "Yemaya you are the gush of the ocean and the gush of spring", but that one specifically is not YORUBA. I wanted to pay homage to Princess Nokia's roots by translating from HER ancestral language.

I came here from reading an article about how black african women are leaving Christianity and turning to their ancestors traditions with magick. And I agree. I'd rather follow my own belief and having that feeling like I finally belong than being forced to take part in a religion that my mother, my grandmother, and my other relatives think is the right way. My soul is my own I don't need someone to tell me what path or what direction I should go for salvation for my soul.

@Ezra j thank you. My mom doesn't understand. With her if a religion is serving any gods that is not part of the Christian religion its a no no. But she doesn't realize that some Christians are still serving the god of their faith and are also adding a goddess with it. So they're calling themselves Christian Wiccans, but it will be a huge debate and argument on what religion I rather take part of that'll make me feel wanted. There's just too many rules and expectations for Christianity that I don't want a part of.

I’m Wiccan and I don’t understand Christian witchcraft ( but I support their right to practice ) as their God does not condone any witches...besides himself of course...

To the people dissing her. The movie The Craft is cool but these spiritual practices are incredibly diverse in real life. There are green witches, hedge witches, psychic witches, Wiccans, some of us work with deities from the Hellenic or Nordic Pantheon, there is African witchcraft, Hoodoo, Voodoo, shamanism, some witches see and work with the Fae, some of us are into cartomancy (tarot and oracle cards), some read coffee grounds, etc etc etc There's also INCREDIBLY evil shit that messes with people's heads and souls. These sort of attacks are a bitch. Hence, hexes, uncrossings, return to sender, psychic defense, energy cleansing, etc. So, DON'T YOU FUCK WITH MY ENERGY. LOL

In traditional Mexican culture, a CURANDERA and a BRUJA are dissimilar in that the bruja is seen as using spells or magic to harm others, while a CURANDERA uses her powers and knowledge to heal. So theyre basically admitting to being evil. They just assume that most ppl would confuse what they're doing as "GOOD", when in fact they're talking about harming someone else w/ their magic.

I'm Nigerian (Igbo tribe) and grew up with mostly Yoruba people. I loved this. Especially the Yoruba and the Mami Wata tribute (Yemaya) in the beginning. I may not practice orisha worship but I have respect for my pre-colonial culture. I love how black Caribbeans and South Americans were able to hold onto their West African roots for so long. If only Black Americans could've done the same, but slavery seemed to have a harsher effect on blacks in the US.

From my limited understanding of Yoruba this is what I made out. They seem to be speaking a South American dialect of Yoruba so it may not be accurate :
      Kai Kai Kai Yemaya olodo,
      Kai Kai Kai asesu olodo
Kai= expression of wonderment, Yemaya olodo =Yemaya of the ocean. (Yemaya is the goddess of the sea).
Asesu olodo = I can't make out the word "asesu" , but the phrase could just mean goddess of the ocean.
Lati oke = from up above
Yemaya olodo awa olodo mi oh = Yemaya of the ocean, we are of the ocean.
I'm Igbo, so if there's any full blown native Yoruba speakers reading this that want to correct me, feel free to. 🇳🇬

Diasporan blacks in Latin Anerica/ the Caribbean were able to hold on due to the nature of slavery there vs the US.
In the US, enslaved black people at their peak made up a third of the population, while in the Caribbean they were more like 80/90% of the inhabitants. American slaves also tended to be in smaller numbers as a group; plantation owners rarely had more than 200 slaves, most only had 20-30. In the Caribbean, it wasn't uncommon for plantations to have 1000+ enslaved people working there. Finally (and this is the biggest difference maker), transatlantic slave trade to the US had dramatically slowed down by the time the Revolutionary war was over; slavery was self sufficient here, people were bred to people to create more slaves rather than importing them. By the time slaves were freed in 1865, no one who was freed came here directly from Africa, they were all several generations removed.
In the Caribbean, on the other hand, due to the brutal nature of slavery there, death rates were high and the transatlantic slave trade continued to fuel slavery there. In Brazil, the last slave ship arrived in 1866, and slavery wasn't abolished there until 1888.
African culture, namely Yoruba culture, is so heavily influential in these regions because towards the end of slavery in Latin America, they were the group most heavily stolen from and affected. Other groups, like the Igbo, Kongo, Mende were the groups primarily bought to the US and enslaved, and had been in the US 100 years before Yorubas in large numbers hit the Caribbean.
I hope what I'm saying makes sense. I just don't want people thinking that US blacks are some sellout group, when it's a fact that African culture just could not flourish in the US version of chattel slavery like it could south of here.
TL;DR African culture survived in the Caribbean because its way more recent history for them than it is in the US.

De acuerdo :( Hasta pone triste a uno :( It makes me think, how is it that this beautiful culture survived the middle passage and many generations of slavery yet in one or two generations amid the foulness of the United States, we end up with this offensive and ignorant mess. I guess she is just reflecting what is around her. But, que tristeza...

    • @JoBlakeLisbon
      @JoBlakeLisbon 7 років тому

Yoruba culture actually developed in very interesting ways in Latin America - Brasil and Cuba particularly. In some parts of the US you can find some elements of Yoruba culture - particularly in IFA and Orisha worship. What we have here is not a continuation of that - it's an insult - simply trash associating itself with something deep, spiritual and beautiful. I agree completely - it's in just a couple of generations that this idiocy has taken over - que tristeza indeed.

+Tyrell Lopez not evil at all. Witchcraft and dark power was use for Africans to communicate with our ancestors. It help overcome all encounters of evilness. Help Africans to protect their divine energy. You could protect a nation with witch craft and dark power for a long time. Western society did not understand it at all. The chants, dance and praises. Even with Greece. They stole our masonry, switch it around and claim it was devil business.
