  • Here I'm turning inexpensive spinning tops for the ACT Woodcraft Guild in Canberra. There's no sanding or polishing as many will be decorated by kids. All that's required is a good finish off the gouge and a sharp point so they spin true.

Fun project. Kids love them even in a high tech world. Our turning club was demonstrating at a State Park yesterday. We turned tops and gave them away to the children. We supplied colored markers and showed them how to color them. I got 2 hugs. Made my day.

My 12-year-old granddaughter watched this, and when she comes to visit me at Christmas, she said she wants to try this. A whole generation of Americans cannot afford homes. Instead, they live in apartments and condos. They have no room for big things. Small lidded boxes, small functional bowls, and other kitchenware fit in with their minimalist lifestyle. Tops are a great item for craft shows. Your instructional videos are your forte!

This reminds me of infant school days during the privations of WW2. A consignment of presents arrived from Australia; mine was a wide bodied spinning top.I made up a 36" whip of 1/4" leather boot lace, and a friend and I would race our tops down a 300 yard empty back road, making the tops airborne for extra distance. Hours of good fun! Bernard.

What a wonderful little project. Demonstrating the process is another great way to spark someone’s interest in turning. Bravo.

Very neat project; now I need to have a go at some of these. Look like really good practice and skill builders as well as being fun. What a great deal, get to play with tops and look like I'm doing something productive -- it doesn't get much better than that. 😀

What speed are you turning those? The tool only finish looks great and you seem to not get any tear out, even with that soft pine.

2300 rpm. Turning tops from wood like this is a great way to learn about shear cutting. Any hint of scraping and the wood looks terrible.

@@RichardRaffanwoodturning Thanks for the response! I think I was going too fast at around 3000 rpms and wind up getting vibrations. Great information as always! You're the man!

Richard was that a 1/2" or 3/8" spindle gouge? I've never done much spindle turning, I never could get the hang of using the cheap continental spindle gouges I had. I just got in my two Henry Taylor spindle gouges a few days ago so these will be good practice to learn how to efficiently use them.
