We were recommended to replace our aging main water supply line with pex. While it may be used successfully in some city residentual environments, we have had nothing but trouble here in the country. It is a long way
from our meter to the house. Moles are attracted to it and tunnel from nearby pasture and have bitten holes in it several times in the last two years! Unfortunately we were not aware until we started getting huge water bills in addition to plumbers repair bills. An expensive lesson learned the hard way! One professional told us that pex sweats and the moles may have been attracted to it during the droughts. We decided to go back to pvc schedule 40.
Not schedule 80
Your professionalism is a cut above the rest. I don’t know how you do it. Great job on all 3 fronts; the service and repair, production and telling the story, and putting up with “pipe fit.. plumbers” lol who can’t help but watch an learn something but feel the need to chime in to feel like their way is the best. It might be cause I’m just a lowly journeyman, but the Master Plumber I apprenticed under said there is more than one way to lay pipe! An there will always be something someone can teach you even if it’s not as efficient as yours. Take from everyone and every experience you come across plumbing and form your own style. He said never stop learning or get stuck in your ways. Oh and be kind to people willing to show quality work for free. Lol well maybe not the last one. Thanks for the video guys and God bless!
Great Contribution my friend. Thanks so much for chiming in.
what about a tracer wire to be able local the pex pipe before someone digs??
Tracer is for dangerous supplies like natural gas...if you hit a water line...it's just play time.
Nice job! Such a smooth pipe replacement. Nice soldering!
Harris we thank you so much for the feedback! 💪
Hello I was wondering if Pex fittings are allowed in Los Angeles for burial? such as 90’s and Tee’s for Pex A.
considering how flexible pex is, shouldn't you minimize the use of elbows and get a direct flow to the house?
U won't die a couple 90s in your water pipe is better than bending the crap out of it
If your doing a 90,you're not bending the crap out of it lol
@@davidmoreno5228 doesn’t it come in a roll?
@@pgood7266I was thinking the same thing lol
I didn't think of connecting to the existing copper pipe. My copper pipe goes thru the foundation into the house. I think it would be best to replace it all rather than attaching the PEX to the old copper pipe. Can clamps be used underground?
lol..clamps?
If you think it would be best to replace it all....that's called a home re-pipe.
whats the point of putting pex from main to the galvanized pipe? why not just use the same pipe? why mix the two?
Rookie move-- pouring water on a HOT soldered fitting.
You should try it. I have done this for 30 years and works AMAZING! Happy holidays 😃
You or the ppl that you hire ? Lol
Why are you using insulation to keep the dirt from touching the pipe are you back East where the weather is cold and you need it?
nice but you need to feather your dirt under the pipe with wet dirt to make sure you have no dips or low spots, nice and smooth
Not necessary with PEX. No joints for shear or beam breaks
I guess the insulation was used to cushion the pipe from sharp rocks or people backing their car over the buried pipe area. How well does it weather and last when buried? By the way, Great Video!
Where i live solder unions under ground are not allowed. Only brazing….. it is different there?
What did you use to dig up the yard? I have a same issue but t just need to replace the whole line but both are screwed on so that's easy. I just need the easiest way to did a 3 ft trench to my home across my yard under my sidewalk
Chipping hammer with shovel bit. Then shovels and picks. Good look! You got this.
You guys have to braze at some awkward angles. Much respect.
Why you guys use soder instead of braze????
The reason for the insulation isn't to "keep the dirt off the PEX line, as told in this video and its not to cushion the line from rocks. The insulation is just for what it is always used for, to keep the line from freezing. Even here in Las Vegas, where it's legal to bury the line 12" down, we use insulation for that once in a lifetime deep freeze.
That said, without the special tool for the fillings, it's not very feasible for the normal homeowner. PVC may still be the best option where allowed.
Is pex a or pex b better?
Instead of the PEX 90, wouldn't it have been better to curve the PEX around that corner? Smoother flow and no chance of leaking.
That is a option to consider .
Shouldn't you be using PEX B for direct burial application?
Does that insulation hold up well underground
Correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like you ran a 1" service on in fact it should have been at least an inch and a quarter minimum running the irrigation off of it and everything like that you undersize the service if it was 1" it was 11/4 in
going into the house You needed inch in a quarter up to the irrigation
Why a 90° coupler at all?
Why just not curve the pipe? I trenched a soft curved conture as opposed to a right angle. I did not require elbows, just two pinch clamps at either end (used PEX B, readily available at all box stores for DIY'Rs).
Did you use 1” or 1 3/4 ?
@@guitardo1 I used 1" PEX-B with 1" Apollo Stainless steel barb pinch clamps and s RYOBI Pinch clamp PEX tool ( workswell and cost much less that of the Milwaukee tool)
I was thinking the same thing.
Spraying water on a hot joint will cause micro cracks on the solder joint. Tail light warranty
I didn't watch the whole video, but does he mention the possibility of having to add ground rods. The old copper pipe may have been a part of the grounding electrode system of the house.
Wish I knew how much $$$ was charged for this service to be done..
Do you need a permit to run your own water line?
As soon as they sprayed cold water on a scalding hot solder joint they lost credibility as plumbers.
I’m going to run a new line off the house for a full RV hook up. But I need to bury at 48 inches because of frost line code. Can I use the same PEX line? Or is there another for lower temp conditions. Thanks.
Why did you use plastic elbows instead of brass?
Cheap and non-corrosive, better yet, non-tarnishing
Thank you for this great video.
Thank you for your acknowledgment . Cheers !
I always thought you had to use schedule 80 pipes when replacing pipes under ground.
Is that a copper to galvanized steel connection at the house you have there? Won't that cause problems later?
Our connection to the house is pex to copper, Yes, Gal and copper materials do not get along. The 2 metals create electrolysis and will cause corrosion.
This always trips me up because from what I understand is in order to have electrolysis happens , you need (a) electricity (even a negligible amount which happens when there is a ground on the pipes ) and (b) requires 2 dissimilar metal pipe.
And from what I understand, water is a conductor of electricity so even if the metal pipe is disrupted by Pex , wouldn’t the water act as a jumper cable?
In this video the galvanized pipe and the copper join together as they are directly grounded to the soil.
That being said, I’m sure it would take a long time for a problem to arise and the alternative could be cost prohibitive . So, I would probably proceed in a similar fashion but, later when that customer rings me and I see the name in the caller I.d. , the 1st thing that pops in my head is “dammit I bet that joint sprang a leak”
was wondering what state is this water main install. I live in California and pex is not allowed with direct soil contact. Is that why you guys install the insulating sleeve. let me know. thank you.
Yes. Technically it should be inside a potable water sleeve like PVC .
My pex rep stated it would be ok in soil , its California that made the sleeve ruling .
Thank you !
California is bullshit!
California is related with communist, both start with same letter “C”
@@langh.5283 Well by that logic, every county in the world should go communist to have a chance at becoming the world's sixth largest economy.
Wouldnt you want to use two 45 degrees and not a 90? Soften the flow so it doesnt punch out over time? Opinions?
That would be a great idea for drains, but for a uponor water system, it wouldn't make a difference.
Does the main water supply line connect straight to the water heater
No. most of the time the main water supply has to feed through the main water shut off valve & the water regulator if your water pressure exceeds 85 PSI.
Thanks for the info
Thank you for posting
Can you soft solder underground ? Thanks.
thanks! but why you replace the copper one, corroded? why it needs insulation for PEX?
It doesn't need insulation.
Because you can charge $3 per feet...I dont see other reason.
I still don’t know what the problem was with the existing copper line.
Nice work guys
What was wrong with the copper pipe.did you try to salvage the old copper pipe?
Fred Sanford in the house
You heat OPPOSITE the joint you’re trying to solder actually right in the middle of the fitting waiting for the green flame to appear before applying the solder.
That is not a water main repair that is a service
Tracer wire not required?
Only for gas lines, i believe.
I thought once you solder its supposed to cool by itself??
That’s an option, but I always cool mine down right away woth water. Never have had a problem in 28 years.
Where do o I purchase the pex expend pipe
Call your local ferguson pipe and supply. They are the biggest supplier nation wide.
I always wonder why they make the valve at the meter soo hard to turn. Why not just make em easy to turn with one hand 1/4 of a turn? Shouldnt need huge tools or a big T to turn the water valve off n on. Thats potential breaking of the main.
Good job!
A Ford or MacDonald compression fitting would have saved you a lot of time and none of those stupid crimp rings. And the cold water on a hot pipe...wtf 🤣.
Yeah, the cold water on the hot joint... OUCH!!
Everything is 👍 good job… but Why would you not complete that beautiful Plumbing Job By Repiping the water main! Eye Sore 🤦🏻
Not bad, sawzall? Please don't condone that. And be sure to talk about drawing the solder into the fitting. You didn't show that. Couldn't use a bend support in lieu of a 90?
Cool . Thanks for the feedback.
Explain why you had to replace the main water line…how old it was…why not replace it with copper again
I still don't understand why the insulation was needed.
too much heat in the ground out there .
Code
David Cruz protection from rocks
Protection. Additional.
David Cruz exactly, unnecessary steps which ok but he insulate the pex and not the copper which it is required because is a metal and at least when we do it we bring pex right at the meter all the way until it bends up and add copper or pvc 3” below ground so we don’t have weak points like the 90 and the 2 connections he made
Great job spot on
Go Ahead
Put your overalls on bro dirty the threads
Why not just use sharkbite connectors instead of soldering?
You can . Just not 100 percent comfortable .
Soldering makes it 50x stronger than any connectors or fittings that just simply crimp or glue. Soldering gives me 100% assurance.
you are joking.
way to many fitting in the ground, leak city in a couple of years
thats wirsbo not pex
Wirsbo is a brand of PEX, which is now known as Uponor. It's just PEX-A.
@@MsNalalaful Uponor is the company manufacturers name, not the name of the product. Wirsbo is technically Pex B. And pex A is generally just referred to as aqua pex or he pex, or simply pex.
@@randymarsh1729 Wirsbo was the former name of the company Uponor. They make PEX-A.

For example.
You see it says "Brand: Uponor (Wirsbo)". It's PEX-A or AquaPEX like you mentioned.
So many cringe worthy moments in this video. Not how I'd do it. But hey, good luck.
By the way, did you get this inspected? Or did you just bury it? That wouldn't pass an inspection up north.
Very Nice
Don't ever use a sawzall to cut copper pipe
if you use a 614 Sawzall blade, it works perfectly in those tight spots. I have cut hundreds of copper pipe using a Sawzall, you just have to know how.
Buy them gloves
Nope! Can’t work with gloves in this application. Thanks though.
Not the way I would do a water main..... But good luck with it.. I'm glad I know how to do it the correct way.. thank you for sharing.. Robert Jr NJ here..
That's great! Just film it and show people the better way. In fact you can show this video and say: "This is the incorrect way, let me show you the right way"
Handyman is going to show how it’s done. I’ll wait. LOL
Plastic 90....junk.
Ridiculous to uto cut and use a 90 degree fitting, should have just arc'd the trench...one more joint to leak..and defeats the purpose of running long runs of continuous PEX
mmmm no sand on top of the new line and no caution tape between the sand and the soil for future digging i don't seams like you dont care about your costumers
Thank you for your comment " I dont seams like you dont care about your customers "
Really
Is pex, you breake it, you fix it .
@@TwinHomeExperts
He got an excellent point! I always do a bit more than what the code mandates. Right now I'm doing a100ft main water line. The code is minimum 24 inch deep. I'm doing it 3ft deep with the trace copper insulated wire, the protection foam, sand on the bottom and top of the pipe, caution tape one feet from the top down. No connection in between. Used only 90° sleeves no 90° connectors. One inch pex A.
You know what the "paisano" meant to say. Pls don't make fun of him😂
Hey illegals!Thought l heard someone speaking spanish in the background.😆
So now it’s phucking illegal against the law to speak Spanish, WTH is wrong with you moron
A real plumber would of used yellow sand around the new water pipe instead of dirt clods.
What is yellow sand? I know to not eat yellow snow. 😂
incredible
How do feel about illegal immigrants workers?
California LOVES them for cheap wages
🤤🤤😳
California wants to win with the illegal votes ;)
I about died when I read this
great !!!
Should not have cut that tex at 90"s, better dig a wider tranch and give a wider curve, minimize opportunity of leaks
Good dude's, but talk douchy
