    Practical advice for future water heater woes in real life: look up "water heater anodes" or "water heater sacrificial anodes". In order to prevent corrosion on your water heater, which is usually what causes leaks and the premature death of your water heater, most of them come equipped with "anode rods" which more-or-less soak up all of the corrosion instead of letting the tank itself do it leading to rust holes. They're made to be replaceable so you just take one out and stick a new one in. Most homeowners don't even know they exist or that they're part of standard preventative maintenance for water heaters. Yours most likely got used up which lead to your current leak.
    Ship hulls do the same thing by welding on zinc blocks to soak up all of the corrosion into themselves rather than the actual hull. Super interesting stuff!

    As far as coloring the coloring pipes goes, I think that the mod Mick (cowsarevil) uses for painting an entire network is a good thing to consider, because it lets you stripe the paint with two clicks instead of 50. Then you can do grey (for CO2), and blue (for cold).

      The other thing I like about that one is that it lets me paint pipes and wires that are in my living quarters from outside, where the pollutants generated won't taint my otherwise spotless living space air. I get unreasonably angry when I have even trace amounts of toxins in my base air, so instead I paint that stuff from outside. Same effect as ripping it all out, painting the cables/pipes elsewhere, then laying it all back down again (so it's not even cheaty, tbh), just way less bother. I wish I could find a mod that removes the pollutants generated by paint cans (or the infinite paint can one to roll it in as a config option)

    @Splitsie
    Hiya Splitsie! (Also much love to the ever-sexy Capac.)
    2 Things: One I was hoping you would do the two-tone squares for the ceiling in the greenhouse. Paint them blue so the high ceiling gives that "trying to make a fake sky indoors" look that you always see in scifi films. Secondly, as to the stacker setting the crafting number to the printers, it is actually MUCH easier than it sounds. I have done it (from scratch and without tutorials) and my head didn't explode or even start leaking marshmallow fluff outta my ears. You can fit 3 printers (don't really need it for the toolprinter) and 3 stackers on one chip. Basically just set the stacker to the amount to make, chip says 'when printer output equals that setting, turn printer activation off'. It is a VERY short and VERY easy MIPS code. I even made mine so when the printer is turned off the stacker shuts off too (to save power). Additionally since mine were outside and storms were an issue (on mars) I put a single line in before the looping that tells the stackers to not spit out items when the stack hits full. I would love to see you give it a try, even if you just tare it down after just to make a point to the pro-stacker folk. I have complete confidence that you could do it with ease and I'd love to see you get into the IC stuff more. What little you have done so far you did well! I think if you let yourself dabble in the MIPS stuff more you would be able to come up with some really neat things!

    @Flipsie IRL greenhouse's have sawtooth or "ridge and farrow" roof patterns for heat differential - just like the in-game mechanic allows. Is not cheating - getting the in-game airflow right so as to be able to extract heat constantly for smelting might be a good challenge for you.

    If there's a light blue among the colors available, painting the ceiling could help make your "largest breathable room" (soon to be) as the room "we pretend it's outside on earth" all long term missions outside of earth include at least one such room in their objectives for psychological reasons.
    Probably can't paint with trees and clouds level of detail, because of game limitations though.

    @Splitsie, for your hot-house room to heat gasses, could you put an uninsulated tank in a small room to get optimal heating/volume of gas? Tap the pre-heated gas in the room to top off the tank when you pull from it, then pull in outside atmosphere to refill the room.

    I heard somebody on your stream say that walls are perfect insulators so maybe this is a dead end but:
    I wonder what affect it might have on your "hot house" to "double pane" the room with an additional volume of gas around the exterior.
    Second, I don't know what the atmospheric composition of Venus is, but could it be more efficient to fill the room(s) with a greenhouse gas like CO2? (I think Nitrous Oxide would be better, if it works that way?)
    EDIT: Another thought, if the heat "generated" by window panes is relative to the exterior temperature, maybe double panes would still work?

  • @exarch404

    Technically, the pipes for the vents in the greenhouse didn't need to be insulated, but smelting silicon is not that hard I suppose.
    When you mentioned displays, I think the console can be pre-configured, using a data disk, to read parameters from a sensor and display them. So you wouldn't have to start messing with batch writers and such just yet to display temperature and pressure inside the greenhouse.
    And at some point, you might also want to think about colouring not just your pipes, but also your power circuits.
    speaking of those, at some point adding a station battery backup in your greenhouse might be useful, so you and/or your plants don't die if there's a power issue elsewhere in the base after, say, a few large tanks explode and take out half your base ....

    Hot gas production/storage might be better done in stages because the volume of gas in your hot gas tank was what made it take so long. What if instead you had two tanks, when the glass room gas gets reasonably hot you pump that into the first tank which has a bunch of heaters on the line. The heaters can then take that smaller volume of gas to useful temperature faster at which point you pump it into you HOT gas storage tank. That would only need maybe a couple heaters to keep it hot. Might even be reasonably doable to program a IC10 to automate the movements of the gases when they hit the target temps.

    • @hubertnnn
      @hubertnnn 4 місяці тому

      Or have a switching storage where one tank is being emptied (its already hot), second is being heated (is already full) and third is being filled with cold gas.
      When the first tank is emptied then just rotate them.

  • @shadowdrake082
    @shadowdrake082 4 місяці тому

    This came out pretty early... I got to catch up now. I caught the last bit with the planned hot room gas creation. Wonder if you could do some PV=nRT math to shoot for a target temp and number of mols in the room at all times but the problem I feel would be that if you shoot for stellite temps >1800K, you wont be able to meaningfully collect it because most devices would instantly autocombust in there. What gets me is that is complicated math because we need to know the total energy so that you can make sure you have the right amount. But maybe if you shoot to target 150kPa of gases in there until you reach stellite temps and then slowly extract and readd gases then maybe it would function really well as a heat box, only requiring power for pumps to push air in or out.

      Ideally yes, but with the spray tool and the filtration I already set up the chance of getting above the danger levels was very, very low

  • @daz8405
    @daz8405 4 місяці тому

    While you've said about pumping gas from the hot-house to the furnace storage tanks already; it might be better not to move the gas itself from the hot-house and just use a heat-exchanger to move the heat alone. You'll need systems to filter and cool the gas you keep adding to the hot-house (rather than just the off-gassing of ores} otherwise, or you'll over-pressure the hot tank quite quickly.
    If you've got enough nitrogen available, you could set the furnace to use N2 as it's heating gas and filter out everything else. This will reduce the chance of getting volatiles and oxygen from ores in the furnace and of the pressure running away.

    In real life - stressing a plant can be a way to get more heritable variations. (Just more diverse offspring, not particularly adapted to the stressor.) One mechanism for this may be that when stressed, the plant does not do as much suppression of mutations ("proofreading"). I believe zia maize (corn) is one plant that exhibits these properties.
    This may benefit survival of descendants. Resources normally spent in proofreading may be used elsewhere. Also, when a plant is poorly adapted to its environment (under stress), greater diversity in offspring may increase the chances of some of the offspring surviving. (When a plant is well adapted, keeping the offspring more similar to the parent, which is surviving well, may help the offspring survive.)

    2:33:30 RE "that mod", Creative Freedom, one _really_ important note is that it has an option in the config (that's off by default) that makes it so the default state of building is all of the normal vanilla limitations, but allows you to set a keybind to override them while held. It's so much better, imo, because it lets you generally build exactly like vanilla, but still lets you intentionally, and more importantly _knowingly,_ override those limitations when it makes sense, like your pipe supports.

    • @Flipsie
      @Flipsie  4 місяці тому +1

      Oh that's cool, might have to play around with it at some point then :)

    • @KaedysKor
      @KaedysKor 4 місяці тому

      @@Flipsie I highly recommend it. Lets you intentionally bypass certain silly restrictions, like not being able to place stairs when there's flooring down (but being able to reinstall the flooring after the stairs are installed) and similar. I also sometimes use it to run wires under lockers or up the sides of glass doors or similar. But having the vanilla restrictions on by default and having to hold down a key to bypass them makes it an intentional decision each time, and thus feels far less cheaty.

    • @hubertnnn
      @hubertnnn 4 місяці тому

      So it works just like anarchy mode in Cities Skylines that when turned on makes Chirpy mad and lets you place anything anywhere?

    • @KaedysKor
      @KaedysKor 4 місяці тому +1

      @@hubertnnn default state just disables nearly all vanilla placement restrictions. There are some limits for technical reasons, for example with wall-mounted devices or with full-block objects placed in the same space (like a frame placed over some types of cladding), but in general it just removes placement restrictions. I recommend instead setting the option to keep vanilla restrictions, and setting the following option in the config where those restrictions are suppressed while a specific key is pressed in build mode. Let's you bypass the restrictions whenever you think it appropriate, but it's an intentional choice each time, and you retain awareness of what those limits actually are, some of them being important for gameplay reasons.
      For example, when I first started playing with rockets, I built a nosecone right up against a hangar door without realizing that that wasn't allowed by default. Result is that, on reload, the game thought the door was inside of the nosecone, and wouldn't let the nosecone be deconstructed as a result, even after I removed the hangar door. Had to manually delete the nosecone from my save file to fix it. So ya, some of those builds restrictions are there for a reason, so retaining knowledge of those restrictions, and having to specifically _choose_ to override them each time, is very valuable, imo.

    Here's a possibly dumb question.
    If splitsie connected a gas tank to the hothouse of doom with a passive vent, would the gases in the tank heat up to the same temp as the hot house? or does it need to be actively circulated?

    • @Flipsie
      @Flipsie  4 місяці тому +1
