One more thing, there is a bus repair/sales place in Phoenix that specializes in school busses and I hear they are very friendly to the schoolie community. It's called AAA Bus LLC.

When you got that over temp alarm you should pull over as you did but leave the engine idle. Diesel engines cool down when they idle and heat up when they are under a load. When you shut the engine down while it is hot it stops the water pump and the engine heat has no where to go and will pop off the overflow and you lose coolant as you did.

First replace the thermostat, then get injectors cleaned or replaced.

Sounds like a head gasket going. Diesel head gaskets go out slowly, not fast like a gas engine.

Been trying to reach you guys the more you drive to the bus the better the material you put in it will work it don’t work if you just put it in you may have to go a couple hundred miles or more but it will work no computer nothing wrong with your computer. You just have to drive, thank you be safe

I would think that if you had diesel trash in your tanks then you would have to empty them and have them cleaned replacing fuel lines and filters. maybe bad injector if you have those.. possible a compression issue with one of the cyinders.. but i sure would find a diesel mechanic to talk to about that.

Some where on UA-cam I have seen an air scoop cut down from a tote, fastened with zip ties to the side and direct more air to the radiator. A cheap fix that might help you 😕

I use a fuel additive on all of my diesels to raise the lubricity of the modern fuel and protect my injector pumps and injectors. Modern fuel has a lot less lubricity because of the lower sulfur content and does not lubricate pumps and injectors like it use to. I use Hotshots secrete everyday additive myself but most brands will work, Howe's is cheaper and I have used it before to good effect. I also use Hot Shots secrete sticktion eliminator about every 3rd oil change to free up sticky injectors. I would suggest you talk to a Caterpillar mechanic or three and let them advise you on the best practices to keep your engine running well.

Hi Joel and Emma on your Cummings Diesel and if is a turbo diesel it needs to be cooled down for five to ten minutes in park . By turning the engine off you could burn out the turbo. Also some Diesel are not for your bus there are a few grades that are made that is not good. Also it could be they put a governor on it and it could make it run hot. I was an equipment operator and have driven a lot of big trucks. I wish you luck.

That is a CAT not a Cummins and there aren’t different grades of diesel fuel.

@@ocny4468 not for on road diesel engines there aren’t. Sure there are different types but the stuff sold at the pump works in all on road diesel engines. The other versions are heavier weight diesel used in slow speed engines. So in reference to the original comment of there are some grades that aren’t for that bus that’s not the case. Any diesel sold at a gas station or truck stop would be correct for that engine.

"They" say that many of the lubricants have been removed from modern diesel fuel. I use an additive in my truck that adds Cetane. Many people swear by the stuff. Also, turbo lag is real. Diesels don't accelerate like gas engines. It takes a second or two after you stomp the pedal.

Hi, it’s me again. Do you want to get the Lucas Gas diesel treatment fuel injector cleaner that will take care of all your problems you should run it in there all the way up there all the way back you have no more problems, but you do have to run it from time to timeonce a year

It's quite possible you are fortunate that you had near full tank as the Seafoam might liquefy contaminants residing on tank interior surfaces and in the lines. One of my university professors once quipped: "The solution to pollution is dilution". Lots of fuel and matching ratio of Seafoam might avoid injector pump and/or injectors getting worse trying to deal with flood of concentrated crud and contaminants. If that's not the case then the injection system is getting a good cleansing dose of SeaFoam. I'm assuming it works - hey, surely an American free enterprise chemical corporation wouldn't fudge how effective a product works in print right on the can would they? Many small gasoline engine owners (RV generators, lawn mowers, etc) seem to swear by it. My Porsche mechanic friend recommends Marvel Mystery Oil additive and they market a gasoline treatment product but he deals with gasoline engines. What's best for 170K diesel is completely out of my knowledge base.
You mentioned a turbo. Does Lenny have a turbo as well? Um, the 1970's Porsche turbos had issues and one of the best things for them was a timed idle wait before shutting off ignition as well. They also had oil and their own designated oil cooling radiators in those whale tail engine deck covers. So yeah, maybe the turbo wants/needs some attention in addition.
On this trip Lenny is in a working environment he's never experienced. Maybe some sage advice from his long distance semi brethren could help. Wish you well.

Did you ever change the primary fuel filter/separator? I think that is key. Probably a 10 micron Racor. The one you previously changed should have been a 2 micron. If you had contaminants in tank you should start with both fuel filters. No sense in doing anything else until you are getting enough clean fuel to the engine.

    • @davidstump3946
      @davidstump3946 Місяць тому

Oh. Also to take the primary off…all you need is a strap type filter wrench and an extension for your ratchet. Easy.

Have you tried turning it off and back on again? 🤔🤣 That's insane though. So much work done to still have heat issues... I'd love to know what they find is the solution for that. Maybe Lenny can use the same treatment! Good luck to you as well!!

@@CozyLivingMachine No I haven’t tried that, but I’m willing to try anything. I just took it out at about 7:30 when it was much cooler at it got up to between 196 to 199. I’ll definitely keep you posted. It goes back in the shop on July 15 to rule out more possibilities 🤦‍♂️😂

Did it help at all? Do you think the change in elevation brought this on? I feel so bad for Lenny.
(Although I do love to hear his little startup beep tune, and his turn signal sounds!)
🙏 you find the issue and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

It's so hard to say if it was the Seafoam or just the rest that was needed. I do think he's back to his old self, so maybe it was partially elevation, partially some bad diesel? hahaha he does sing a little when he's excited to get going. 😂

You should never have put that vehicle on high speed roads. You deliberately placed other drivers in danger because of the vast disparity in speed.

We see semi trucks using 4 way flashers all the time when they need to run slower on hills, etc.
