jukebox musical is the term you're looking for. and you said what we were all thinking!
I think Moulin Rouge does a very good job of this, especially the stage version. It's not all "old fashioned", but they cover the songs in a way that fits the style of the decidedly old-fashioned setting perfectly. I was so impressed with how they integrated songs and story better than a typical jukebox musical ever could - in my opinion it is much better done than the film.

I've been legitimately thinking through how this might go in my head for over a year. Their covers of 'Roaring 20s' and 'Mr. Blue Sky' have *strong* opening number and finale energy respectively, I could probably go on for hours.
Starts off a slow ballad about relationship troubles, but then takes an angrier tone starting from the 2:50 mark. Abigail Brooks certainly sells the frustration and anger at being in an unhealthy relationship, especially the bit where she knocks over the music stand: Was that bit scripted or improvised? The backup singers also help sell the moment, as they go from providing 60's style backup vocals to moving further into the background during the angrier portion. All in all, this certainly is easy to imagine being part of a musical, at one of the musical's more dramatic turning points.
This girl will go far if she meets the right people. American idol did her wrong, she sang better than anyone on there, this girl got the pipes!

Probably better for her that she didn't accept the offer to "win." It's all bs television. The person who who would have otherwise won sometimes doesn't accept the offer and therefor for the sake of television they have someone else win. The winner has to, by contract, stick with them and not sign on to any other record labels.

What I love about PMJ is that they always know exactly when to take a silly song with potential and make it beautiful (e.g. Habits), and when a song is so beautiful already that the only way to go is to make it silly (but in a clever way). Not going to be listening to it habitually like I do others (like Creep, or anything with Hayley really) or especially the incomparably beautiful original Happier Than Ever, but for what it was intended to be, this was really fun!

Billie Eilish Sr. scored a major hit in 1962 with Happier Than Ever. A shame we lost her, because her granddaughter's version can't hold a candle to the soul of the 20th century.
