He is also extremely agile, with quick feet, and this often allows him to stay a move ahead of who he is guarding. 2) Chris, like pretty much any smaller D1 player, is highly skilled and has excellent shooting form. His handle is extremely tight and it allows him to be a threat from a catch and shoot standpoint and off his own dribble. 3) Perhaps the most important thing Chris does is play extremely smart team basketball. A lot of his best plays during his freshman year at Miami were really unorthodox passes through holes that not everyone on the defense was aware of. He sees things the other team doesn’t, and that makes him a great asset to have on the floor. Julian Newman is around the same height as Lykes, and to be fair he has a lot of ball control, and a pretty nice jumper. But this video exposes what 1v1 footage from middle school camps doesn’t, which is that he has absolutely no idea how to apply the skills he does have to a high level 5v5 basketball game. The white team had a few D1 players on it, and they weren’t at all phased by his ability to go between the legs. Julian is also not very athletic at all, and this coupled with poor instincts makes him a liability on Defense, especially when his team plays man most of the time.

Is it possible his actual goals are more related to gaining attention and views, rather than actual basketball accomplishments - going to a D1 college? He is the star player at a terrible HS program coached by his dad, his mixtapes get tons of views, he doesn't play AAU, he goes to obscure camps and exhibitions to show off his skills, and he and his family get profiled in the media all the time. So in that sense it's all working to plan. Of course, getting destroyed by actual good teams and not getting any college offers will poke holes in the illusion, but it will be nice while it lasts (and there seems to be an unending supply of Newman fans who will always think he's a NBA level player).

It’s not just that he’s barely 5’6”, it’s that he has short arms and legs too. That limits his ability to be effective off the dribble; if he’s being guarded by a 6ft point, all his crossover moves will be within the defensive stance and range of his opponent. He can’t cover enough ground laterally to shift his defender to the left or right enough. Short strides mean the for all his speed, bigger guards can cover the same ground in fewer steps and stay in front or at least recover quickly. It goes without saying that his short limbs and stature will kill him on the defensive end. Everybody can’t be Mugsy or Spud.
