I was wondering about that too. Either way Michael is a genius but I was curious to know whether they were based on his already solid picks or if they were completely random and his fish just chose solidly.

There's actually a line in Michael's original video where he briefly explains that the stock options are randomly generated from within the top _"x" number of_ stocks.

The funny thing is WSB was actually pretty chill about this. Some of my favorite comments from the reddit page of this was:

@@MarkoIronFist It's not contradictory to anything, it's just a python library that he imported. It's literally called numpy, (number + python) it's a library for mathematical functions
@@RevoltPlays I believe he is referring to naming conventions of variables. Like camelCase, or under_scores. Like, numpy as a variable name would typically be frowned upon. As a programmer, it should be separated to represent the two halves well so it's more readable, i.e. numPy would be slightly better.
But yeah, numpy is just a library that does math that is almost always used in python machine learning applications. And since it's a library and not a variable, it can break the typical naming conventions.

I love that there's actual theory behind why the fish did well and why wsb is bad, and Reeves fully having no idea about either is showing us the theory being applied in real life. The fish is an example of Random Walk Theory and WSBs failures are Managerial Hubris.
I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that he had no idea about either. It's pretty obvious that the fish is literally just a 50/50; equivalent to just flipping a coin on each set of stocks. From there you can simply infer what that means about WSB
Michael's a smart guy, I'm sure he can piece together some of why this is happening, even if he didn't put it into the video
I'd go as far as to say that Micheal knew full well what he was doing and just wanted us to come to the conclusion on our own. Show don't tell and all that.
Also Michael did not show how either system would decide when or if to sell. Given how WSB operates more in the short term, this may have given the fish an advantage.
@@talancorwell Scientifically speaking, there is another explanation for why the fish performed so well. Enter Chaos Theory; whilst it would need more testing for verifiable accuracy, it's entirely possible that both the fish's movements in the tank and the stock market trend correlate with the _3x+1_ equation and since WSB (and market experts, for that matter) does not follow this pattern, it simply could not perform at the same caliber from a fundamental level.

I just discovered Michael recently. And after watching his Goldfish and Stocks video, I genuinely thought it was one of the greatest UA-cam videos I have ever seen on the platform.

0:45 the import part are just packages you might need for whatever script you're writing. Python is a very modular language, it comes with a set of default features but there are tons of others you can "import" at the start of your script to make more complex stuff. For example Python will do basic math by default but there is a math package that will literally let you do scientific calculus in code.

There was a newspaper that did stock picks based on randomness. I think it was a monkey or something that picked the random stock to invest in. It ended up outperforming most indexes.
The reason for that is that random chance doesn't pick based on risk, and the fish and the monkey will pick high risk stocks and yield high returns when the market is good. The problem is that if you do that long term the risk can compound and you could end up losing a lot.
The benefit of a random stock picker is that you can usually run it cheaper which means lower fees for the people who invest in it. Even if it's worse than expert opinion, the lower fees might make up for the difference.

Random chance can often perform better than active decision making, depending on who is making the decisions.
Average redditors and even average stock traders may not know how to perform very well in the market, hence why so few get super rich off of it. So random chance would outperform them.
