Buddy: FB on upgrading to the IFR 1200 Super S, that's the cats meow. Now, how about a couple of videos on how to use service monitors? Maybe a basic one on hook up to xcvr, do's and don'ts. Then maybe a more advanced one.... You have a great presentation style, and your pace is perfect. You would be exactly the right guy to do one.
Yep it is crazy seeing an old gem like this unbuilt. Something you do not see these days. Although not as collectible as a HeathKit but still a nice score. I will build it.
Buddy, awesome Video! A Super S thumbs up to Mel, what a wonderful gift. Yes, build the 488. There will be one more box coming with Eico equipment in the near future. Thank you Buddy for all you teach us. Blessings, Joel.
You lucky dog! I wish someone would send me an IFR! My whole test bench is 30+ year old heathkit test gear my dad and I build back around 1980. I've had to pass up so many service jobs because I just don't have the test gear I need. One of these days I'll have one of those. Years ago I worked in a commercial radio shop and loved the IFR they had. Such a useful piece of kit. 73, KB9RLW
May one come your way one day! That is when I fell in love with the IFR stuff. I worked for EF Johnson and we had three. They are nice units. Quite a few years ago I bought my 1200 plain. Yes it has given me a few problems but I still love it. Most everything I own is old stuff. 30 years plus. But have gotten buy ok with it. This Super S is a nice addition to the bench.
Well thanks for that very nice comment Peter. Very much appreciated. You know you are a great guy also. Watching your recent video now and loving it my friend. Take care and thanks for stopping in.
As I recall Heathkit had a matching transmitter to go with the HR1680. As for the Eico 488 kit -- don't keep it apart....put it together! (Take that Dave Jones!). Enjoy that new Super S, a service monitor is a wonderful piece of kit to have on the bench. 73 - Dino KL0S
Leave it unbuilt and has real historical value in that state. These days it's a toy albiet a fascinating one. I have a Heathkit switch that I demo using a highly modified Knight KG 630 scope. It's a lot of fun to play with.
RE the HR-1680 and your ser. no. 01634, I have ser. no. 09934 and it has a service date of 10-23-79. There is one wire on the preselector. I also have the matching HS-1661 speaker with ser. no. 00848. I bought both from the builder around 1983/84 just a tad before I got my Novice amateur license. Apparently he had sent it in for alignment since I don't think he had any equipment to do that. I then used that and a borrowed DX 100 ? transmitter and a light bulb for a dummy load and T/R switch (wall light switch) as a Novice... oh, and the antenna tuner was a borrowed cardboard box, air variable / coil (with alligator clip) affair. It was a joke to look at but it worked. Gosh, those were the days. I once worked a guy who had the matching transmitter to the 1680 and his CW tone sounded like he was sucking on the wrong end of a Herter's goose call, so I never pursued getting one (I heard they were notorious for that). Then I got a used Kenwood TS-830 and I'm a CW guy so that didn't last long. So I sold that and got a Ten-Tec 580 Delta with QSK full break-in and boy that floated my boat. I love that rig. I worked the world and states CW and got into RTTY and slowscan and QMN traffic nets and almost every Michigan county (some people just wont QSL). Right now the grease has hardened and I can't turn the PTO so I'm just heart broken. The reason I became inactive was because disease took out two trees and then a small tornado took out the big maple and then I had three supports instead of six for my 80M horizontal loop. I also lost my shortened 160M dipole and the inverted L random wire. So that's why the grease hardened. I would turn all the knobs and switches over time, but obviously not enough.
The multi-section capacitor which came with that EICO kit is from Micamold Radio Corporation. Their EIA manufacturer code is the first three digits of the code across the bottom.
Very nice Buddy, I think I can safely predict more construction in your future. My 2 cents - build the Eico. Maybe a series showing how it was done in the good old days. Regards, Dave
Congratulations on the IRF. I use a 1200s myself, and love it! Regarding your track low/med/high, I think something might be out of calibration there. I can look later, but "high" is on the top line of my spectrum display. I >think< medium is at -50db, if I recall. I used it, just this week, to tune a duplexer. I'm jealous you have the lid and the amplifier! hehe Good luck and enjoy!
I hooked it to a commercial 800 MHz cavity duplexer and things were much different. So must be the design of my home made cavities. Will try some attenuation on it and see what it does. Was really surprised to see the amplifier wit it. I have never tuned a duplexer with an IFR 1200 before. Wish someone do a video on it.
Great video Michael. I did not get to hear much of the audio since I am at work. But will look at it again tonight. Thanks for sharing this. I have loaded your video on my site as well so others can learn from it.
Wow that is like Christmas come early ..... Most of that stuff is in MINT condition or brand new.... D-Lab was at a ham fest and showed a IFR 1200 I have been looking for one for the last 5 years .......
Well, I have finally caught up with your videos and with you in real time. That was a lot of fun. You got quite a haul there in the mail sack! Good for you. :) I have spent more money since I have been watching. You talked me into an FT-101b (waiting on delivery) and I am still looking for that small TS-50 and a 520. Keep it up. I will still watch even if my wallet cannot keep up. ;-)
Thanks for watching all the videos. I have to get busy now and get more online!. Was going to do one tonight but had shop company. Will try and go it tomorrow night. Sorry about making you spend so much money, But hey it is fun! Thanks for all the support my friend.
Great. Appreciate that information. I seen my old boss tune a duplexer years ago with an IFR. But I used the wavetek back then. Kurt knows his stuff about these units.
of course the old ifr would start working on spectrum, did you think it would just sit there? with the other one shining and bright, and expensive. it has pride you know
At some point does a Tech ever have too much equipment??? LOL You guys have shops full of equipment. I think I have something with 4 radios, its not a drop in the bucket compared to you guys. I find it so interesting please keep the videos coming!!!
Scott Lee "To much equipment" are three words that should never be spoken, that's blasphemy. Your mother should rinse out your mouth with some flux. :-) Seriously though, usually were upgrading to newer equipment. It's a never ending battle to keep equipment updated to work on newer electronics. Just when you think you have everything you need they come out with something new and you need a new piece of equipment to service it.
Wow what a great day opening all those boxes...the ifr is way cool and i would love to have one myself but i digress.... I think you should build the eico kit and make amvideo on the build....would be enjoyable to view Keep em coming Buddy Jeff WD8JM 73

I've bought bought a slightly faulty 1200S to go with my 1200SRA.. yes i have an SRA with very very little or no information on the interwebs. the 1200S i just swapped for a Motorola 3001C it will be repaired and work along side my Marconi 2955 and Wavetek 3001B..
I love the way this guy always talks about "singles" and uses a "single generator". It threw me initially, but I soon worked it out! He is SO good at the practical radio stuff, he has earned the right to to pronounce things any way he wants!
"Too much test equipment"..... Let's analyse those curse words..... Was there ever a woman NOT in need of yet another pair of shoes? Did anybody ever meet a priest not in need of another altar-boy ? Was there once a bee not in search of the next flower? So what the heck are these people on about? Having 'too much' gear or equipment is on par with a 'boat that floats too well' or 'water that is too wet' . Silly talk! Madness! And that is what builders are for ! Kisses! Paddy
Wow its Christmas time for Buddy, Buddy I enjoyed seeing you open the box that had the IFR 1200 Super S. That is a truly universal test instrument, Hope you have lots of fun and use for it ! I am happy for you! The Heathkit and Eico are nice too, ENJOY !!!! -------- John A Bellas KC2UVN

Hi Buddy,
Boy, what a haul of early Christmas presents. Have fun. :-) 73 WB3BJU
PS We all know you want to build that EICO kit.
Yes some nice stuff in the mail this time. I have to build that kit on cam
wow!, y'm jeloys! nice!!
Very nice stuff for sure. I am shocked.
Can we watch a modulation waveform on an IRF 1200 ?
Yes you can. Just set it to scope mode. However it will not look as good as on a external scope that is set up with a demodulation port.
@@TheRadioShop Thank you ! I"ll give it a try and see how it looks.
If you build it we will come LOL
I like that!

Buddy, it's time to change the blade in your box blade. HiHi
Agreed!
That Eico kit looks defective and dangerous. You should ship it to me for proper disposal .... :-)
Yep it is defective. Those capacitors are 30 years old lol.
Do you or anyone out there know how much the IFR 1200S cost when NEW ?
If I can remember correctly it was around 10 grand for the basic unit. Super S fully loaded was like 13 to 14 grand.
Hi! What was the firmware version for the Super S? I want to get one but it has a version of 1.12--00
You can always tell when it's a Heath Kit by the color of there units!!! What's the history on that anybody know,,, they just wanted to be different from other Radio Manufactures?
At 13:08 someone filled in the crossword. That's not nice, it came pre-assembled. And useless. :-)
Nice catch. I did not notice that.
