I am a Who fan for over 30 years. And this version of this song performed at this time of their career might be one of the most poignant moments Pete and Roger EVER had! Pete is "the brain" of the Who. He is the soul of the band. But without Roger fronting the songs, conveying them as if he wrote them, they don't have the power that Pete intended them to have. This shows that right here! Unbelievable moment!!
There is a point in the song when Pete looks over at Roger with a smile and a nod of approval and 40+ years of history between these two surfaces...a special moment.
Pete's grinning from ear-to-ear as he listens and really savors Roger's performance. Roger's voice is something else and he puts his deep feelings into it.
And then a few months later Pete performs the song solo on one of his “In the attic” episodes Pete says “I’m gonna sing this song and try not bugger it up like that other guy”…
According to Pete, this performance is the moment where he looked at Roger and said to himself, "Yeah, I could do another album with Roger singing stuff like this." Thus began the recording of _Endless Wire._
I'm seeing your comment 10 years too late, but we are about the same age now! I hope you still come back here like I do! There aren't many old souls like us anymore
As an over 50 years fan, I can say there is much more to The Who than musical credits of American tv series. Aside their masterpieces there are gems like this, where Roger gives voice out to Pete emotions with such a great talent. Pete is by far a better composer than many rock/pop musicians, including Jagger/Richards. Rolling Stones make shows, The Who make music. That’s all the difference and why The Who is by far the best rock n’roll band.
If you have not heard The Who's I'll Be Back..if you ever lost a parent, husband/wife, etc. that will get you sobbing. Ditto Julian Lennon's Love Never Dies.
the truth is that Pete (his own words) was totally touched by Roger's singing and playing that he just wanted to listen to him. He said that this was the time he decided to go on with Roger, to go on with The Who, with a new studio album (Endless Wire) despite the deaths of Keith and John... You can find it on the "Amazing Journey" documentary ;-) LONG LIVE ROCK
Other than my sons and grandson, and well my sweet husband who died 8 weeks ago... these are my two favorite men on earth.... Amazing! Roger looks and sounds fantastic....
Theres certain songs in this world. In our lives. That we stumble across and or that are shown to us. That. Truly just move us to tears. Because we so strongly feel that we can truly relate to the words being put forth. And share the pain or joy expressed. For me. This is one of those songs.
This reminds me of being a young boy and seeing Elvis for the first time, not the fat, fading Elvis but the young, vibrant, symbol of rebelliousness that shook the world, musically and culturally - can't imagine what Pete, Roger, Lennon, Bowie, Dylan, Elton and countless others felt when they saw him too.
Finally got to see these guys in Vegas to wrap up their 2022 North American Tour. It was like spending the night with a couple of good friends since their music has become so familiar to me and helped me so much in my life. GOD BLESS THE WHO.
These guys mean so much to me. I'm only 17, yet the Who is a part of my life. One of the most important parts. It's like my religion, I don't know what I'd do wihout them. I'm a Wholigan through and through :)
this was the last concert i saw with him. before he died! when this song played i remember him looking me in the eyes, and i knew right then that i was his son and he was proud of me!
I can't watch this enough. An amazing song and Roger just owns it. Great shots of Pete watching over Roger as he makes Pete's song his own. I watched the making of the song on the DVD "Amazing Journey." I haven't seen The Who live since 1989 but they still get it done like no other.
Of all the bands I've seen The Who are the Greatest. And who of the Who could sing it beautiful. And Daltrey sings it the way it sung for the King himself. Elvis and still the King of Rockin Roll.
Saw the Who when they came to NZ last year. They didn't play this (which was a shame) but it was just so superb. Love that these old men can still put out a song like this and play with passion and skill. One of my faves. Thanks for posting.
i saw them in newcastle when i was 15 in 1981 - still an honour to have been a witness & all my friends who've 'made the journey' will be playing this in heaven tonight. see you up there guys. xx
After reading the many responses to this timeless song I must add that, to me, this song represents youthful innocence - that all too fleeting time in life when we dream and believe we can be anything we want to be. But this song goes a bit further than that - it also represents the affirmation of a long and heartfelt friendship between two wonderful human beings who happen to be phenomenal musicians. It is no accident that this song is so reminiscent of the great Who classics.
This song and the persona of Roger sends chills and shivers throughout my body. I don't care how old he may be, he MOVES me. I have a deep desire that will never cease. :)
I think Pete & Rog should go into the studio with a couple acoustic guitars and make the final Who record, with Zak & Pino on maybe the final three or four. Acoustic Who sounds really nice.
This song and waiting for a friend, my two favourite Who songs of all time. quadrophenia my favourite music themed film of all time. What a legacy this band will leave. Thank you
The fire still burns way to go Pete and Rodge Who,Who, Who, Who. Forever Greatest Band I've ever seen I used to follow u in 73 In Deatroit when all 4 of u played Quadrophena and now u 2 keep on keeping on thanks for the tour. The Ox And Moon were there in spirit with also.
a few years back I woke up in the middle of the night, no reason other than that's what I kept doing at the time, and I was flipping channels on the tv. Vh-1 Classic was showing this concert and I caught Roger doing this version of the song. I was half asleep but I loved the sound of the music. The next morning I was convinced it was a dream. Now I know it wasn't. Thank you for posting.
To me this song tells of a kid who was always awkward and unsure of himself. But then one day that kid comes to the realization that he(or she) really isn't all that bad of a person and then faces the world with a new sense of god given confidence.
I think this song is a really good "coming of age song" perfectly waking retrospective feelings for a band thats been around for half a century, that has done it all, and a great finish from blues to the wildest embodiment of rock n roll ever, to a beautiful song, played by the only two remnants of what can be righteously the greatest Rock Band ever.
Over the years these guys have fought like schoolyard kids ... because they're brothers. The love has ALWAYS shown through the songs, the writing of them and the performing of them. Now that the years are behind them and much more of the marble has been chipped away from their statues, the majority of what is left is love. I've heard Pete say he doesn't want to tour ... but Roger does, because Roger knows they are carrying the tablets to the people and celebrating the genius of his best friend. So ... Pete goes on the road for his friend. All friends should be able to put aside their petty disagreements and have pride in each other as these two geniuses show us every time they play a song.
après tant d'années de star system, qu'elle simplicité, qu'elle sincérité, l'émotion à l'état pur. Bravo d'être resté des hommes avant tout. jean no le gall
"Now I know how so called beauty lies" That is one of the greatest lyrics ever. Roger Daltrey blows y mind eery time I hear this song. He's the ony man I have ever heard who can sing the word fuck and make it sound beautiful.
I never new best friends that got along all the time. They made it work that is what true love and friendship is all about. God bless them straight from my heart ❤️

Pete is not bad on his own
Both great, together or solo !
after the fire.
There is a point in the song when Pete looks over at Roger with a smile and a nod of approval and 40+ years of history between these two surfaces...a special moment.
Pete Townsend is first and foremost one of rock's greatest poets. Roger Daltrey himself is a genius in how he breathes life into Pete's songs.
agreed
yes.
Jesus. Just when you've almost forgotten how amazing those two were. Just...stunning.
❤❤❤Amen.
❤️❤️

Man what a good story thanks for sharing that
😞
My god, what musical joy these two (and beloved John and Keith) have given me for most of my whole life (found them at 13), now 46, still loving them.
I’ve watched this no less than 300 times and it brings tears to my eyes every time. Thank you
It didn't used to, but now I have two young adult sons and I can't make it through the song dry. . .
This goes out to my two handsome boys-always xx
🤦
godamn-itt-does
im 19 and ive been a Wholigan since i was about 13, doesnt matter the age, their music speaks to your soul.
I am 19 today, brother.

What a sad , happy beautiful song . Roger put's his feelings into it

All these years and I still love watching this. Pete looks on thinking Yeah, Roger, you're doin' good.
What an incredible song, and so incredibly well sung by Roger. Brought me to tears when I first heard it last year. Very powerful.

I have this Documentary.
This is my hands down favorite song from these guys. And is in my top ten favorite songs.
Petes love for Rog' is written all over his face as difficult as their relationship has been over the years.
A beautiful thing to see.
Brothers 💪❤
Only time and love of a brother can do.
So true.
Other than my sons and grandson, and well my sweet husband who died 8 weeks ago... these are my two favorite men on earth.... Amazing! Roger looks and sounds fantastic....
Simply remarkable. The look on Townshend's face at the end says it all :)
And Eddie Vedders explanation to his voice was perfect! Like the trunk of Tree!

Two great looking boys !!Thank you Pete and Roger for all the wonderful memories..
These guys blow away anything musically out today.....who's kidding who.....THE WHO!

@John Osman
And his voice held up after all those years. What a great band. They gave us so much great music.
One of the best Who songs, I cry every time I hear it...the way songs should move you.
Finally got to see these guys in Vegas to wrap up their 2022 North American Tour. It was like spending the night with a couple of good friends since their music has become so familiar to me and helped me so much in my life. GOD BLESS THE WHO.

This is absolutely magnificent
Fantastico
Goosebumps really sat in right around the 4:50 mark.. something tells me Mr. Townshend had the same feeling 😀❤️ What an inspiring performance!
This might just be the greatest song in the world. I love how a lot of Who songs are not just great music, but also a short story.
Roger, you've got it all, with some extras thrown in...
This was the performance that convinced Pete to write new songs for the Who.
I love watching him play guitar. I love hearing him sing. I love anything this man does.
It is 2022 and I still love everything he does❤️❤️
Just ran across this beautiful piece today, Monday, July 31, 2023. I've loved them over 50 years!
These guys mean so much to me. I'm only 17, yet the Who is a part of my life. One of the most important parts. It's like my religion, I don't know what I'd do wihout them. I'm a Wholigan through and through :)
I'm 61 and i feel the same way
Le Monde a besoin d'eux, ils sont resplendissants. Cette chanson est vraiment puissante. Du grand fait par des Grands.
Pete just loves this performance
One of the finest performances of one of their finest songs. Beautiful.
Beautiful. Really beautiful.
i love this version....almost moves me to tears!
this was the last concert i saw with him. before he died! when this song played i remember him looking me in the eyes, and i knew right then that i was his son and he was proud of me!

Pete's playing is so understated in the beginning...he starts with the volume low but with hard strums.
Los Who !! Los que me ayudaron a tener una vida feliz cómo la que tengo. Les agradezco todos los días. Gracias por la música
Beautiful song and had the absolute pleasure of seeing Roger play this in Glasgow last week. Legend.
Of all the bands I've seen The Who are the Greatest. And who of the Who could sing it beautiful. And Daltrey sings it the way it sung for the King himself. Elvis and still the King of Rockin Roll.
I can't stop crying. What a beautiful performance!
Truly amazing song. Love this version definitely a desert island disc.
I love watching him play guitar. I love hearing him sing. I love anything this man does. I know it sounds silly, but I am truly in love with him.

How absolutely deprive of life one must be to be one of the 6 who "unlike" this song!
