It may have been due to the allies of, or those who agree with, the villains telling their side of the story. Overtime this may have caused the two versions to be seen as not happening at the same time. If I remember correctly, they didn't even know that much about the sultan, so it's plausible that this could have happened. Not to mention history does become muddled overtime.
