    How to make your sketches more real - Industrial design sketching
    Full article on the blog.
    When you start learning how to sketch, you study and practice basic rules drawing lines of perspective, line of geometry, and simple shapes such as square, circles… and so on.
    We are going to see something that will change your daily habit when you draw. At the end of the video you will know how to make your simple shape become more real. In other words, how you will transform a geometric shape to an object.
    At the end of the video, you will see a small demo with a touch screen phone.
    Recipe from basic shape to more realistic sketch
    Recipe to draw from geometric shapes to a more realistic object.
    This simple technique will push you to the next level! - Feel free to add some line weight below the object to give it more weight. (It’s like a dark and thin shadow below the rounded edges)
    Same logic here. Can you feel the difference?
    Reminder: Draw the full ellipses for the sphere contour line. Or your sphere may appear flat.
    For the sphere, it’s already all rounded. So how to add more rounded edges ?? You simply can’t. But we can play with a bit of lighting and the contour lines. I bold a bit the edges of the contour lines, especially below the “ball”.
    Make sure your contour lines go inside the hole to understand it. Play with your angle of contour lines to decide of the roundness.
    You don’t have to be perfect in your drawing. Make sure your perspective is fine and that your main shape is there. Then, everything will be alright.
    That’s all for today! Pretty easy right? So now it’s time to take a pen and practice!
    Let me know about your sketches in the comments, or let me a question if you have any.

    When you made your survey, I answered that I wanted to learn how to do more professional looking/dynamic industrial design and I never checked back on your yt to see if you posted it (and I didnt see any emails from you sadly) but now I see that you posted multiple videos that help me and you don't even know how grateful I am. You made my whole year up to now because I've struggled with this so bad and it made me lose confidence in my work.
    I wish I had more to show my appreciation, but I promise to donate to you sometime soon. :) *Hugs*

    +Orval Sifontes Actually most ball point pen are good. When I was student, I got the Papermate ball point pen. I bought it in bulk. The Atlantis M is pretty cool as well as it's retractable.

    Great video it was super helpful, but Christ what was that high pitch screeching sound?

    • @Thedesignsketchbook
      @Thedesignsketchbook  7 років тому +2

      Thanks for the feedbacks :) It was one of my first video, and I didn't choose the right mic I guess - The high pitch came in like a conflict with my Macbook plug I guess. I know it's a bit annoying but I though it still preferable to publish the videos.

      Do you know how to apply this to faces and figure drawings? If so can you make a video on it?

    • @Thedesignsketchbook
      @Thedesignsketchbook  7 років тому +1

      It's the same technique. In character design, it is essential to spot the center lines. It's no much about product design so I can't guarantee a video on this topic. I will think about it ok ? :)

    hello, the phone that you drew is that in perspective? basically what im asking is does everything you draw in 3d has to be in perspective? I know orthographic views doesn't have to be but if you start drawing in 3d does it have to be in perspective?

      +Mark Snaggledine Hello Mark, I am using a screen tablet. It's a Cintiq 22HD from Wacom. I share a bit about the tablet and my installation here: www.thedesignsketchbook.com/how-much-it-cost-me-at-ikea-to-install-the-wacom-cintiq-22hd/ Any tablet can do such drawing. Unfortunately no mouse can be so precise.

    Do you use a Wacom tablet + pen to draw with Sketchbook Pro?

  • @dmanakell
    @dmanakell 7 років тому +1

    this is an amazing video. you are very good at it. I have two questions: what kinda tablet do you have? one with a built-in screen? or the regular pen tablet? I find it very difficult to draw with a pen tablet.
    the other one. I'm having some problems when drawing shape transitions. let's say the product has a square shape at the bottom and it's cylindrical at the top or a rounder-ish shape. if you can make a video about it, you will be a hero.
    many thanks

      Hello Danny,
      I am using a screen tablet. I do have a Cintiq 22 HD and a 13 HD as well for when I need to move from a place to an other. For regular tablet, it's difficult at start. It's normal. You will need at least about 1 week of intensive drawing to get used to it. That s how your eye looking at the screen will calibrate with your hand.
      About the volume you talk about, you will need to draw faded lines.
      Feel free to see more tutorials and article about design on the blog at www.thedesignsketchbook.com

      [ the Design Sketchbook ] thank you so much. I'll take a look at it.
      about the tablet I just have the intuos pro, and even though I've had it for quite some time, to me it still doesn't feel natural.

      If you can, jump on a screen tablet ! :)
      I heard HUION tablet are doing well. They are much cheaper than Wacom. But I never tried myself. Worth exploring though.

      Bic is the best thing ever. They need to make the pens bleed proof.
      Also, not a ball point, but the paper mate flair is an excellent felt tip.

      Hello Sam,
      I feel Ipad Pro is a very well made tablet. However, I do have a mix feeling with it. I still prefer sketching on Wacom tablet. Some more you don't have Photoshop or Illustrator on it. Which are the softwares used by the industry.
      I did write an article about it here: www.thedesignsketchbook.com/why-i-might-not-sketch-on-ipad-pro/ Hope it helps ! :)

    Why do you draw the contour lines in a circle like that and not on the minor and major axis? how do you decide where those lines will go on the circle? just intuition?

    • @hibiscusflower5911
      @hibiscusflower5911 8 років тому

      +Zoe Doucette hehe I accidently rewatched the video, and then came to the comments box to ask the same question.
      Why did you place the contour lines the way you did at 2:25

    • @Thedesignsketchbook
      @Thedesignsketchbook  8 років тому +1

      +Zoe Doucette Hello Zoe, the contour lines are good to show the surface of the volume in no time (I don't need to spend time at shading it, instead I just add a few lines only).
      Then, about how to find these lines : Did you see the box I draw at the beginning of the video ? They have contour lines that divide the box in 4. Each contour line cross the middle of each edge.
      Now, Imagine you fit in a cylinder inside the box. Magic, you have your contour lines. They are the same. :)
      To find out where are these lines, you can train at drawing cylinders inside a box. With practice, you will be able to draw the cylinder directly.
      Hope it helps !
